...just poking around, scanning balls of all sizes and hues, and I found a Strong Signal Contact. Tragically, I didn't drop everything and immediately inspect it like I should have done (AND WILL DO NEXT TIME), and it disappeared while I was finishing scanning the moon I was in the middle of scanning. Has...anyone else had that happen? Have you checked out it? What was in it?

How far away is the big question. Within 1k ly of occupied space then ok, but any further out then VERY spooky...

If I'd been exploded by aliens it would've been worth it.
I'm not super sure. 1k sounds a little too close, but I probably wasn't farther than 2k.
I've never died from a Signal Source before and this includes dropping in front of the pirate king Colossus in an fricken Anaconda while I was in my Eagle. Didn't get hurt from it but it scared the bejeezuz outa me. As long as you can boost and have even rudimentary shields you'll get away from them no probs.
In a Strong Signal Source the lone pirate has nine other friends that will bring a tear to what's left of your eye.......
Yes, be wary of Sss. can be very large packs of condas, vultures etc.
If it's a pirate trap, you will know very quickly, as the comms channel will immediately fill with gloating from the instigators right before they set up their attack run on you.
I'm about 700 ly out from Sol at the moment and I've seen them in a handful of systems. Part of me wants to go check them out but the sensible part of me says stay well clear lol

Happened to me - SSS, I homed in and dropped out of SC - 3 fully charged Anacondas were waiting. One rapid repeat and a change of soiled underwear later...
Yeah it surprised me too to see them so far out. I thought I'd left the bubble of colonised space ages ago but there's still some NPC's out here. I am giving them a wide berth!
If you want to explore any signals try the USS, even the weak signal source can be pirates hiding.... just be ready to hit the FSD
