So, is this game just too stupid?

Yes, it's stupid that it does that; a feature like that should work as intended and not cause you to get blown up for getting you stuck in a queue, and no "learn to fly" isn't, at least IMO, a good response to give a new player like you that's been mindlessly blown up by a station for a queueing issue. For me at least I've found that the fun to be had outweighs the annoyances, especially after getting more cockpit time.

A workaround could be using autolaunch to get you lifted off and aligned with the mail slot, then moving out and towards the slot on your own to jump the queue if needed. If you zero out your throttle any time before you leave the auto launch will re-engage and (hopefully) set you right if you are having trouble. Also beware of autodock - it's notorious for getting people blown up, especially in large ships. Much more so than auto launch.
I mean, all you have to do is accelerate and manual will take over. It's a rookie error but one has to be open to learn from mistakes too.

I'm leaving a station for only the 5th time as I just started playing. I use Autolaunch, just like every other time. It puts me in a queue, even though there is no one else around. Queue time runs out, and the station fines me, then kills me. Now it puts me very far away from where I was.

If this is the stupidity I can expect, please let me know so I don't waste anymore time...

ty in advance.
There are lots of reasons why I quit playing Elite. This wasn't one of them. Learn to fly the ships. It's almost all the fun this game has to offer. But, if you are using Autopilot to being with, I dont think this is the game is for you anyways....just IMO.

This reminds me of the early days of Horizons when someone filmed his buddy approaching a planetary surface. He must have been going down way too fast and actually looked like a comet - before he finally smashed in a big explosion. Those were the days... (if only I could find this video)
Like those EDO videos where guy in surface films spaceship going full speed overhead....and BOOM...

Hehe, did that recently. Had to get up from the pc for something and my BIL was in his ship watching mine come out of glide and straight into the planet. Another mission failed.

I lost the use of one arm awhile ago temporarily and figured I would try advanced docking computer to see if I could still manage to get some stuff done. After watching it repeatedly drive Cutter into the station wall I decided never to use it again.

So, what your saying is autolaunch is not "auto"? And then when the auto doesn't work, the station, who put me there, kills me?

So, the game is too stupid then...

Guess this is $29 wasted.
Think of it like Tesla autopilot.
It can drive itself but be ready to jump in with hands on the wheel as it will go wrong from time to time.
Honestly, it's a recent feature and one imo the game was better without but either way.... It works most of the time

Hefty shields and hull armour help, but sometimes you do need to intervene...I have biggest possible prismatic shield gen on my "armored valuable cargo transport" Cutter :D

Out of curiosity, asking for a friend, what are the chances of getting interdicted whilst "doing laundry" in Alpha Centauri?

I engaged supercruise assist, deactivated autothrottle, and just maxed it out.

Once you're up to speed (maybe 3 minutes into the trip), nothing behind you is going to catch you until you get slow again, and anything in front is going to get left behind if they turn on you.

Came back with about 10 minutes on the time estimate and played around on the other screen until I was ~500ls out and pulled it into the blue.

Been there a few times now and I've never been bothered while carrying cargo to Hutton. It can happen, but only if you go slow or aren't paying attention when you're close to either end of the system.

Point out a problem I experienced, came here to ask if I can expect more of this before I sink a ton of time into the game, and that makes me a crybaby?
Nah, just giving you a hard time.

Anyone who has played this game for any length of time knows that there are many, many ways to die. Most of them are stupid, although generally the stupid is between your ears, rather than in the game per se :p

Welcome to the game. o7

The shields are completely overdosed, at least for a Cutter optimised for trading (I want as much cargo space as possible) in anything other than in Open mode. The cutter has 2 slots for HRPs that can't be used for shields. Put in the best you can get, get a better armour, and engineer it. This is not available for a new player of course, but then a newcomer isn't flying a Cutter anyway. For everyone else this is more than enough to prevent your ADC from doing serious damage to your Cutter.
Well I like to play it safe, and ship sometimes engages in PvE combat.

Yeap. This stuff is for real in this game. But the DC adds a whole new level to it! It's OK once you know how stupid it is but it's a learning curve...
