So...........(Spoiler inside)

The Thargoids might just be as confused as we are.

If they had the ability to create the anomaly from one of their structures at will, then they would've done that earlier in the month-long conflict in this system.
I'd hazard a guess that it's a peculiarity of interfacing Thargoid, Guardian, and monkeying around with both combining them with Human technology that caused the Structure to react in the way it does to this moment.

And it's a complete game-changer for the Thargoids.

I wasn't playing during the early days of the Thargoid story arc, but from what I can casually glean it seems the Thargoids have lost battle after battle and have lost territory after territory after the Humans found Guardian paleotech and adapted it.
The Pleiades nebula, the Witch Head nebula, and the Coalsack nebula were all lost because Humans are too good in creating very effective Guardian-Human hybrid weaponry.

Until this event happened. Now the Thargoids have gotten an I-Win button against our Gauss cannons; courtesy of Salvation.
He would not appreciate the irony of it all, I'm sure.

It's only a matter of time before the Thargoids'll be able to figure out what caused their own biotech to do this.
And then be able to replicate it.

Which'll allow the Thargoids to lift up one of their Structures, and plonk it down on a nice lowG moon in a Human system and then deny AXI units access to Guardian technology in that Human system they're in. Then, in that system, Thargoids will have reclaimed their original overwhelming power once again...

Salvation's meddling and desire to end the war in one fell swoop caused the war to be turned against Humanity...

What if the "Thargoid EMP" was "just" a side effect of the misfire and not an intentional counter-attack by the Thargoid? There are a number of possible explainations for what happened in HIP 22460:

The EMP that took the human fleet offline was triggered by the Thargoid:
-> Salvation's weapon worked as intended, but the Thargoid managed to counter it.
-> The Thargoid EMP was an accidental side effect of the Thargoid's attempt to re-activate their fleet
-> The Thargoid EMP was an intentional effect of the Thargoid counter-attack
-> Can the Thargoid reproduce this EMP effect in systems with Thargoid structures or did it require Salvation's Proteus Wave?

Alternatively the EMP was the result of the weapon's misfire and the Thargoid actually had nothing to do with it in the first place.
-> Salvation's weapon did not work as intended and misfired catastrophicly.

For humanity, a "simple misfire" would probably be the best case scenario. It was just a critical malfunction and the Thargoid had nothing to do with it.
If the Thargoid EMP was an intentional counter-attack by the Thargoid and if the Thargoid are able to reproduce this effect however, humanity could be in some trouble

I don't think the Thargoids held back until now with this. They just didn't have the opportunity earlier.

Salvation's Guardian-based superweapon has only ever been used in space aboard human ships until yesterday. This was the first time it came in contact with Thargoid tech (and vice versa).

This could have been a spontaneous adaptation on the Thargoids' part, but I personally don't think so (and it would be quite a coincidence to "evolve" right at that second). I think it's more likely the Thargoids haven't been idle all these millennia and haven't forgotten the threat the Guardian tech posed. Over time, the Thargoids evolved and developed some kind of auto-immune response.

If a Thargoid "lifeform" (including Interceptors or structures) encounters Guardian tech, the first response is to get rid of it/destroy it. If that doesn't work, transform it so it no longer hurts them.

This was the first time we brought such a huge amount of Guardian tech to a Thargoid structure, their immune system automatically responded. I don't think this was necessarily "strategy" on their part.

today finally had the chance to pop in and see what was up and ohhh man are the 'goids mad! everyone is KOS in the system now and they'll spawn anywhere, even if you get interdicted by a ganker, which is a fun concept to deal with.

managed to snag this screenshot before getting absolutely clapped by 'goids around the Bright Sentinel though. what a mess:

may try to take a faster ship in to get some more shots of the Bright Sentinel. it's pretty well goofed up.

Many ways to skin that cat. My scanning ship is also not well armored. Get in, get scans and picture and get out.

Tried going in to scan the logs from bright sentinel last night with a friend. Scans aren't sharing. Don't recall if that's normal. Managed to get one scanned and had to leave. Friend isn't familiar with dealing with thargoids normally, much less when they are pumped up. Besides, my guns don't work there for reasons everyone is aware of now and I'm not about to fight an endless stream of interceptors.
The combat ship held up, though to get us the one scan and move on. Didn't get a chance to go back for the second log. Team trouble (dropping out, etc.) and the fact that we discovered the scan didn't share and it was late, meant we had to stop and regroup.

I jumped back in this morning and managed to get 1 log from the Sentinel before being jumped and chased before the inevitable happened :(

I've kinda hypothesized the same. Thargoids are usually pretty slow to adapt for the most part, but after getting hit by both humans and Guardians for quite some time their biology has had some chance to adapt a little bit, and whatever happened yesterday was just a side effect of all the weird crap going on in that structure interacting with each other. I don't think they intended to do that, but it happened anyway. autonomic responses and all that.

I think now they just want some time to investigate what exactly is going on down there by themselves without any outside interference and that's why everyone is KOS. that'll be at Thargoid speed though, which has shown to be fairly slow. not much humans can do about it for the time being probably, but at least they can react faster. hopefully they don't do something too stupid, but I'm not getting my hopes up. the superpowers are awfully scared for whatever reason, and reacting to their fear in a poor way.

humans should've just left well enough alone and let relations mature over time. it's not like Thargoids were/are all that aggressive, and maybe after a couple hundred years they'd be willing to talk some. humans don't really like thinking in terms that long, though.

scans not sharing is normal. friend of mine and I found that out while discovering some old skeletons around the Formidine Rift.

that's my combat ship there, albeit stripped of some of its usual Guardian modules since I wondered if it would make a difference in their attitude. it didn't, but at least I wasn't dealing with rapidly degrading modules.

I managed to get one scan off on the megaship logs too, but it's hard keeping out of reach of those Interceptors if they get too close. think I'm gonna go pick up a shutdown field neutralizer and bring my lighter Phantom for some extra speed, might help in keeping more than a couple of klicks between them. my Mk. II, while fast, couldn't outrun them when they got about 2.25 klicks behind me. at 491m/s under boost, that's pretty damn impressive. I can see why a bunch of people have been bringing Couriers. Mambas, Viper Mk. IIIs or Adders might be a good plan too if you have an easy way to wheel them out that direction.
stay light, keep your distance and let them pass.

I think its more that Salvation plugged it into the Goid base which historically rejects Guardian stuff (violently)- so while it worked to begin with, the base did its thing and did a massive Thargoid energy burp as it rejected Proteus.
It's more like what will happen if you plug a 5000 watt bulb into a 21.1 gigawatt power source. There is always bound to be a surprise within seconds after you flip the switch on.

This brings up a question.
Did the interceptors all get faster?

They look a little different. More grey. I expect the red ones to be basilisks and those are fast. Can't exactly get a close look while half my equipment is disabled and they have multiple angry buddies.
A cyclops I should easily be able to outpace. These guys would drop to about 2.25-2.5 km like you said then speed up and the race continues. That seems to me to be basilisk behavior, but again, are these a new class or same old ones and boosted?

I didn't get too close to them until running away, but they looked like either Basilisks or Medusas from as much as I could gather. they could be a new class never seen before too though. I've never fought them before and refuse to anyway, so I'm not even sure what those look like other than from what I've seen around the net.

can always double check and try to get a good shot of one next time I'm in the area.

More like

ULLLLLLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

at the end of the cutscene.
Shortly before that I hear something that sounds like a cat purring.
I think the Winking Cat has stolen the election victory (Salvation would say "the final victory" in his xenozid.).
We cannot see the Winking Cat because it's on the surface of Planet 10b.
The Thargoids have a cat phobia.
It makes them very agressive.
