So, spying headset.

What do you people expect from a Facebook owned company? terms of service on Facebook are pretty much the same, so yeah all those nice pictures of your family you upload to their servers are now their property so why expect different from any other company Facebook own?

are you guys actually following reddit?

this is such old news and already debunked.

many users have monitored the traffic and analyzed the data as simply version checks and some very very basic ID info for your headset.

lets take off the tinfoil hats now

This trend is bad news.

Yesterday I woke up to find my Win 10 PC account was locked out and handed over to my lad. He signed in with an xbox account and that was it, lost my pc. I had to reinstall.

So Microsoft came into my house and decided my PC should belong to someone else.

I think I will leave gaming now. This is just too much hassle.

windows 7 is where its at...windows 10 is a whole other story for gaming.

no one should be running windows 10 until the direct X 12 gains actually start showing.

Currently there is a limited amount of users but as soon as the user base starts rolling and the headsets start selling well they will start data mining everyone to make more money you just wait.

If you gave me the choice between windows 10 and vista I would take vista every time. Vista was by far the worst operating system in the world as far as I'm concerned but it was better than 10. No amount of money in the world will make me click the upgrade button on my win7, at least not until someone comes up with something better but it wont be Microsoft or Apple.

Show me the net logs, then I'll think about being interested...
If they do don't spy on you now, they won't do it later? Their TOS is very explicit and if facebook COULD spy on you, they WILL sooner or later. Your data is money worth...

gizmodo is trash, stop falling for their FUD. These lines of the TOS are there because of the content delivery service

Facehook going mossad on their customers?

I am shocked.

For facehook, customers are the products, they shelled out 2bn on Zogulus, so it is no surprise they want to to know what float VR users boat, and then use it to sell more VR.

And i can respect that, wanting to sell more VR is ok, its just the methods Facehook uses... i guess if only thing you got is hammer, all customers looks like nails.

I'm interested in the bit where they share details about my physical dimensions. I can imagine the setup questionnaire becoming a bit longer in the future...

We need to know more details about your dimensions so that we can tailor the headset to your needs.

- Interpupillary distance?
- Do you find it difficult finding glasses to fit? Come to Hammerhead Shark Optics for all your spectacle needs.

- Height?
- Misfits & Sons have a great selection of suits for people as short as you.

- Shoe Size?
- FlipperFoot has the shoes you need.

- Length of your dangly bit?
- etc...

NAUGHTY FRANK!!!! :O

Wash your mouth out with soap young man....

This isn't the potty mouthed Drabble thread you know..

But, I did suspect that Facebook would be like this from when they bought out Oculus.

Uh.. this all seems like very normal product gathering information? Like, it's an online store. There's absolutely nothing on here that Steam wouldn't already be tracking. Like... why would on online store NOT keep track of your purchases? And as far as position data, we're talking within the scope of the camera, while the headset is on. Basically, the nature of the data is probably "are they sitting down, or are they standing up?"

My extrapolation might be a little on the exaggerated side, but the germ of truth about who I trust with my personal data is still there. It is one of the things to think about when I'm considering which headset to purchase.

Of course I thought about all of this before I bought my DK2, and I went ahead and did it anyway. I guess that's a good indicator of the amount of concern I have about Zuckerberberg selling my data on to advertising companies.

Steam anonymizes your data, though. Oculus doesn't claim they are.

I think we're asking the wrong questions. Most of the information, as you say, makes sense. The questions for Oculus are:

1. Why do you need the data to not be anonymized?

2. What data do they need to collect that can only be collected through 'local storage'?
