So today I got "assassinated"- is this a game rules violation?

So today something kinda bizarre happened. I was flying around in my beluga, doing a little tourism, when out of nowhere I get interdicted by a pair of players (no naming/shaming). Mind you I was really in the middle of nowhere- edge of the bubble, random star, just finished fuel scooping for my next jump.
I get pulled out of supercruise (at this point I think its an NPC, and so am lazy about prepping my getaway) and am messaged the following:

"ATTN: We are The Glave. Another commander has petitioned us for your death, and we are duty-bound to honor his request. We hold no personal malice towards you and will not pursue you further once we have secured your rebuy. Safer travels in the future, CMDR. o7"

...after which I was summarily dispatched to the rebuy screen, leaving me with questions I'm hoping someone more experienced can answer, such as:
1. How did they find me? This one I think I just answered myself- I just found one of them on my friends list and realized they friended me a few days ago, so they probably used that to track me.
2. Is this a thing? Is there some secret assassination guild running around ED ala the dark brotherhood, and I've just been missing out?
3. Is this legal? Aka, does it violate the game rules? I'm not really that salty, as frankly I much prefer this sort of emergent gameplay over the griefers who just mindlessly blow up other players, but isn't it against some rule to intentionally hunt a specific player?

if you repeatedly target a certain player who is not engaging you, then you have an argument about violating the ToS.

What they did is perfectly fine...and organized.

PSA: Dont accept blind friend requests, and clean your friends list often ...removing those who you dont see online much or no longer interact with.

AFAIK it's not illegal. And yes, the friend-list is a good tool for finding "friends" if you want to cause them trouble. (see how Salome was killed earlier this year).

If they do it over and over again, then that constitutes harassment/griefing. An easier solution might be to move at least part of the time to the Mobius PvE group.

1 - You answered that yourself.
2 - It's a thing. There are a few groups who put bounties out on individual CMDRs. It's rare, so count yourself as a minor celebrity.
3 - Yes, it's legal. Unless they attack you again and again without reason. Even that could be legal if they attacked others in the mean time rather than target you exclusively.

Fly safe.

Now the real curiosity, what'd you do to get someone to place a bounty on you? Do you PVP a lot or something? Seems like if I made another player that mad I'd remember it.....

I accept all random friend requests.

I say, bring it.

I know my Brave Sir Robin manoeuvre well. :D

That said, I'm not really in Open at the moment, keep running in to P2P issues.

I was thinking the same thing. Mallard, you don't sound surprised that you were on a list in the first place. Any back story there?

If their comms macro didn't include your Cmdr name, it was spam.

If this was legit they would have also mentioned the name of the commander who was paying them for your destruction.

This sounds to me like nothing more than an end run around the usual no-comms griefing. They are trying to cover their ***s in case you report them.

They're just hunting down other commanders.

I'd think that'd be up to whoever paid for the contract as far as revealing the employer goes, but yeah I'd say they should have had the targets name in the comm message.

He's flying a Beluga. There may have been a docking "incident" and some PvPers decided they wanted him taken out.

This is just pure speculation based on my personal feelings towards NPC Belugas... and how I intend, at some point, to go to anarchy system with tourist beacons and unleash my wrath on them. :D

Easy Fix.

Look at your right hand panel and select Hide location from Profile in the function tab. Not sure if it's just an Xbox feature.
If you're an actual friend, i'll tell you where I am myself.
