From the games description I instantly thought that this is a survival game in space. From that perspective I entered the game prepared for Day Z in space and I kept in mind that I would have to stay sharp to survive and prosper. Just like Day Z I roleplay a friendly survivor - I see npcs as zombies and wildlife - npc pirates/killers as zombies and wolves, friendly npcs as rabbits/deer etc. I knew I would meet other survivors (player ships) - friendly or hostile who could be grouped up or alone. I stay wary but also greet other survivors (players) in the hope of friendly interaction but don't expect it. I see Factions as large player groups that can offer me shelter or offer me death depending on who I align myself with.
Keeping the Day Z lone survivor perspective I expect to die and lose some progress (in Day Z I would have lost guns, ammo and other inventory) and expect I will encounter a well geared sniper for example (player in an FDL or other superior ship). I embrace that I will lose progress and restart again without complaint.
I think if more players entered Open (and solo/group) from this perspective they wouldn't have such a problem with the loss part whether its from npcs or players.
