Sol System question...

Why was it decided to make Sol a Permit system?
Would it not have been better to make Jameson Memorial permit locked?
You could still have your starter systems.

Sol, Achenar and Alioth are all permit-locked, these are the capitol systems for Federation, Empire, and Alliance respectively.

If you want to know their reasoning, you'd have to ask them, but they don't usually tell the playerbase the reasons why things are the way they are. But if you want guesses as to the reasoning, my guess is they knew most newbies would want to "visit Earth" as soon as possible, so they made sure that you actually have to play the game for a bit before you're allowed to visit Earth. Gameplay incentive.

I suspect the Achenar and Alioth permits were added merely in the name of "Balance"; if the Fed capital is permit-locked, then we'd better make the other two superpower capitals permit-locked, too.

I guess the idea of Sol as our home system is carried over from real life into the game. Earth is still the cradle of humankind, but I am pretty sure for most people it's just Federal capital which is either glorious or filthy or irrelevant depending on a Commander's ideas about the Feds. Sol being permit locked absolutely makes sense in that light.
Actually the first thing I did in the game was getting my rank up to get the permit, which is really not hard. I don't really think my Commander was eager to make the trip, but his player was... :D

This is what passes for gameplay.
The repetitive tasks aren’t fun and you’re not going to do them for no reason.

I actually had fun while getting the permit. It wasn't even hard, not even back then before Horizons when I started playing. It's a bit of mission running and I also made some good credits while doing so since I was in an Eagle at that time and didn't have much.
