[SOLVED] Issue After September Update with Freezing and Stuttering

I'm posting this because I've seen in other communities and Reddit that other players are having the same issues that I had last week: the game had micro-freezes and stuttering during all game phases (SOLO and OPEN): normal flight, supercruise, witch space and even in the menus (starport services and outfitting).

I opened a ticket with Frontier Support and this solution somehow seems to fix the issue, so here it is for anyone bothered with this problem... I hope it will work for you as well:
  1. Make a backup of your keybinds.
  2. Disconnect all USB's, joysticks and all external hardware connected to your PC (except keyboard and mouse)
  3. Make a Clean Boot as instructed here --> (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929135/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows)
  4. Launch Elite Dangerous and play the game in SOLO to verify that the game is now as smooth as usual.
  5. Exit the game
  6. Restore all services you deactivated previously to make the Clean Boot and re-connect all your USB's and hardware as usual.
  7. Make a normal reboot and you shouldn't have issues anymore.
  8. If necessary restore your keybinds backup

does this fix also work for the lack of small seismic charges in outfitting?

Yes, it does. It also updates the Hutton Anaconda to a Cutter, and gives you space legs.*

OP - thanks for this, I have had a few instances of micro-stuttering since the latest update, I'll give this a go if they persist.

*None of the these statements are true.

thanks for info, but this sort of points the problem at your machine config or something running in the background etc.
when nothing has changed and the only thing to be updated is ED, the cause shouldn't be your OS config …. surely.

I hope I am wrong obviously, and if this works great..... but confused why..

can people trying is, let us know if it works,

Well it's a common issue born in a common period, so hopefully also the solution will be common.
Anyway I think it's more pointing to the incompatibility of the new version of the game with some existing service. Once this service has been disabled the game could properly update all register keys or whatever.

indeed, but usb is a fussy thing. i see this workaround as a huge overkill but if the game config has gone stale this might be a practical (and drastic) solution regardless of who is at fault. however i wouldn't take it for granted that previous backed up bindings will work straight away, it could be necessary to manually edit device ids in the config files. another option might be reinstalling the game (i would try that first).

when binding are missing you generally get no response from either keyb or joystick once game loads. i not expecting it to make random shudders..

I actually had to rebind all my keys because I didn't have a backup (I added this point to the list)

Having been working with Win10 for work and seeing similar behaviour in all Win10 apps; even Office, we now know that Win10 update process is to blame. It locks the FS to scan patches and updates already applied and will only release them minutes later. In between, all apps are subject to performance degredation. Office 2016 or above show this behaviour after 28 days and lock-up whilst the updater process scans the local disk (even SDDs show it). The fix stated will only reset the updates and patches to 0 by using the single image restore. Within 2 months, the same will happen.

I have upgraded RAM, tried different power (GPU-based) laptops, different builds and they are all the same. Bad software update process that tries to run in-the-background but cannot since any running session has system files locked.

Welcome to Windows Update CMDR.
