Newcomer / Intro Soooo frustrated!

Thanks for all of the advice. I'm going to back off trying to fight for now, I bought a mining laser/refinery and will play with that, continue to do easy missions.

Another question: I'm getting private messages from guys offering to meet me in space and give me millions, to help me along. I don't particularly want to cheat that way but it's tempting! However, I'm thinking I'm being set up - by pirates, or a**holes trying to screw me. Or perhaps I'm just cynical. I learned that if it's too good to be true it probably isn't. What do you think? Is this common?

[big grin] You'll only know if you take them up on their offer. Temptation is strong in this one... but your friend who's progressed faster than you could surely offer you the same and you already know his intentions - if you really want to receive charity (starts with "ch" like cheat but all different after that). Should you accept charity, make them bring it to you, don't go to them. And grab your friend and others to be in a wing. Now the generous pilots might feel the same as you.

There are players (multibillionairs several times over, usually) who would drop a load of e.g. Platinum for a new player. There are also pirates (ok, nothing much to get here) and worse scum, although I haven't heard yet of them baiting newbies this way.

If you can afford the rebuy on a Hauler or an Adder without too much headache, there's not much to loose. If you meet up inside the no-fire zone of a station (not in an Anarchy system, though), they'll get their behinds thoroughly paddled if they try anything kinky. Those station guns are not something you'd want to be in front of...

As for their reasons - once you can just walk into any station and get any ship you want by snapping your fingers, and it doesn't even register on your account, there's pretty little more except for exploration or social interaction. And giving a new player a leg up will increase the chance of them sticking around until they reach the bend in the learning curve, therefore more players available to play with - or against.

Worst case, you're out ~5000 Cr rebuy for a stock Adder with a full cargo loadout and gained a tale to tell here (no names, though - for that, you'll have to find a combat wing).

On the other hand, if you want to RP your way through your Galaxy, this might be a good reason not to accept such an offer.

As for this being common - depends on the circumstances. On rare CGs, the Hutton Truckers usually show up with a bunch of large trading ships, offering to load up anyone interested with rares for free. I can just guess at their reasons, but probably simply to get actual people into the instance instead of simply NPCs. In BH or CZ CGs, you can usually find a wing of experienced pilots who will let you (or offer you to) wing up with, sharing the profits.

Speaking for myself - we want to keep CMDRs active in this game. Killing them off while they're young (a.k.a. "Sealclubbing") doesn't help there. Once you are grown up, though, things might be a little bit different :D

Well it isn't cheating is it? It is not even an exploit. I have donated loads of palladium to new(ish) commanders before, just to give them a leg-up.

Whether you are being offered genuine help or a PKer is trying to "honeytrap" you is uncertain, depends on how you are being contacted. I have only done it by arrangement through PM on the fora - presumably seal-clubbers wouldn't want to do that?

Good luck

If you've enough for a hauler and all cargo bays you can just sit in a certain starter system and very quickly will be upgrading to an Asp and earning over 10 million an hour without even leaving the station! Just saying... :D

Thanks for the advice all. Anyway, I'm on Xbox One and can't seem to friend anyone anyway. And sure wouldn't know how to meet up w/someone in space.

To Spacebaboy: what do you mean: <<you can just sit in a certain starter system and very quickly will be upgrading to an Asp and earning over 10 million an hour without even leaving the station! Just saying.>> How would this happen? And what's a "starter system"?

No, you don't want to know.
Sounds like the most boring thing to do in the game. I unsubscribe here so I don't get that pushed in my inbox.

Haha! Well damn, now I'm kinda curious and do want to know. Doesn't mean I'll do it. How do I get the the club with the cool kids??

Ok, to satisfy your curiosity:
- find a station that offers missions of the type "bring us x amount of commodity y", where commodity y is actually on sale in that station
- relog, rinse, repeat, get bored, throw a tantrum on the forums complaining about "the grind", threaten to leave the game, be astonished about the huge amount of indifference

Getting money through exploiting some quirks in the game mechanics isn't a problem, but its b o r i n g. Check the threads in the main forum from people complaining about "the grind", requesting insta-"win" buttons (there is no "win" in ED except for what you want to win for yourself) or threatening to leave the game (threatening whom?).

Have you tried passenger missions?

If you have a Hauler (it has great range for a small ship - assuming you A rate the FSD and D rate all other core internals) then fitting a passenger cabin can make you a fair amount and you'll get to see some nice places as well.

As your reputation grows with the local factions the payouts increase pretty fast. Also fit an Advance Discovery Scanner and fire it off every system you go to. Selling the data at the station you're based at will increase your standing with the controlling faction.

Thanks again for the info guys. I haven't been able to qualify for any passenger missions yet, thought I might need to outfit some cabins or something. But perhaps purchasing a Hauler will do it?

HELP! Not sure this is where I should post this, but since I started the thread and have gotten great help I thought I'd try.

I must have done something to my ship (new Cobra MKIII) that I upgraded w/a bunch of things (will admit, I don't understand all of the outfitting details and can't find a good explanation). I can't seem to leave my current system. I took on a mission to take 12 units of explosives to a star only 7.5 ly away but didn't have enough fuel to get there. Plotting failed, after I accepted the mission, should have checked that first I learned. Thought it was too much weight so I abandoned mission and dumped the explosives, but still can't jump to any system. Nothing comes up in that Nav menu outside of my current system. Before there would be stars I could get to, maybe 4, 5, 6 ly away listed below the current system locations. Now my ship can't seem to get anywhere. Full tank of fuel. What did I do? Any ideas??

What fsd do you have installed? I would have at least a 4 d with a new ship.

I have a 2B fsd. Should that be good enough?

My Retracted usage is 8.21, Deployed 10.61
Jump Max is 2.7 ly?? How can this be?

My current usage is 93%, as I have my hard points turned off. I tried some mining and using the Laser shut down my systems. So I, as usual, had to research that, and found that I was using too much power. When I turned off some stuff it worked (but, of course, mining was ridiculous as I would finally scoop something and refine it, but don't have any idea how that works, ended up accidentally jettisoning minerals, and even the small amount I left with was gone went I got to a base - again, I'll have to watch a video to figure out all of that). Seems like nothing is intuitive, or I'm just clueless. All I can do is take some materials from one port to another and make $.

Anyway, I've gotta figure out how to get my jump range back. Why is it that this crazy and difficult game has me obsessed???!!! I don't want to play anything else these days. I really can't play the game until I figure out how to get my jump range back, it was at least in the 7 ly range before.

You need a size 4 FSD fitted - size 2 is your problem - A for the best range, C if you can't afford an A - don't use B ones unless you like to do lots of combat.

Mass is the enemy of speed and jump range, to improve them without using more power you need lighter modules. The B grade modules are essentially the armoured version for resisting combat damage and have the highest mass for their size.

When you get a new ship the absolute minimum you need to do to it before going out is to replace all the E grade modules (the cheapest and least powerful version) with the lighter D grade modules (they are also more powerful).

Take a look at this

It is a splendid tool for working out how to fit out a ship and how much it is going to cost you, remember after you have bought the ship and fitted the new modules you want you should have at least 3 times the re buy (insurance) price left in your account.

Thanks for the suggestion, the best I could get where I am 3B, and now I have 5.3 ly jump range. But I still can't get out of this system (31 Aquilea). Is it possible I got myself into a system and don't have enough jump range to get out of it? Still, every time I try to take a mission and to to Galaxy Map from w/in the mission data, the marker only goes to some other location, like the last one I marked or something. And when I do find the correct locale I get a plotting failure. Nothing coming up on the Nav menu that is out of the system. It's driving me nuts.

The stock CobraIII comes with a 4E FSD so you get about 10LY range - if you sold that for your 3B (or 2B) then you need to go in outfitting, select your currently fitted FSD and look for "Buy Back Sold Items" - that will give you at least a size 4 with enough range to get to another outfitting shop. If you don't have the buy back option then you need to lighten everything - fit D class, sell weaponry, utility modules and all optional modules - keeping basic scanner and a D rated shield - this will get you best range for your fitted FSD.

That sounds like good advice, thanks. I didn't even know there was a buy back option. I do have lots in storage but not a better FSD.
