Even if you can't buy it back, since this clears after 10 minutes or leaving the station, you should be able to store your current FSD and get a stock 4E FSD fitted for free.
Yes it is possible to get yourself stuck doing this. Ways to get out of this pickle:
.
Remove as much mass as possible from the Cobra to increase jump range (assuming you already have the best fsd on offer. This can be done by removing weapons, utilities and all optional modules. You can trial that using a 3rd party site to see what jump range you can get like this.
Buy a cheap ship (optionally sell the Cobra modules to raise cash) which you can equip with a decent jump range. That gets you unstuck but without the Cobra. Once you have the cash buy the cheapest ship you can that uses a grade 4 FSD and in out fitting store a suitable FSD. Then fly back to the Cobra's location and use this stored module to fit to the Cobra (it will need transferring first).
Sell Cobra and buy something cheaper but you will take a 10% hit on some of the ship cost doing this.
Appeal to FD's better nature to see if they will use the "hand of God" to get you out of your pickle.
Looks like that system has a lot of stations - and most of them carry size 4 FSD's - try Compton Hub they seem to have a few options.
Thanks a lot all, I found a 4C in Compton so now I have a 15 ly range. Very cool And I learned a ton about outfitting by going through this. I think I'm ready to try some combat - I'll try not to whine and complain so much when I get frustrated and blown out of the sky.
I'm also going on a quest to find some Passenger Cabins - hoping that's enough to qualify for some of those missions. Any advice in that area? Will I get attacked a lot w/passengers? (I'm playing solo and in Mobius xbox group).
Read the passenger missions carefully quite a lot of the passengers are wanted and if you are scanned while carrying them you will be shot at by security.
You improve your exploration rank by exploration. Scanning systems, stars and planets and selling the data at a station.
All you really need is a basic discovery scanner, but it's far easier with an advanced discovery scanner and far more profitable also with a detailed surface scanner. They are expensive for a new player, but they can quickly pay for themselves.
Cool, thanks, I can get those. But does Explorer ranking improve my Contract ranking?
Aimless is one of the Exploration ranks, as passenger missions include taking tourists to exotic locations and scientists out to observe things your exploration rank influences missions just as on the mission board trading rank affects anything to do with cargo.
Be aware if you are given the chance to do a misssion with a rank greater than yours expect to face difficulties/opponents in line with the rank of the mission not your rank.
Ok, now I get to watch ED Scanner vids on YouTube! It just keeps getting deeper.
This will seem like a dumb question I' sure, but I figured out Fire Groups but can't see how to between weapons/scanner w/in a Fire Group. I'm on an Xbox. There are two devices on my HUD on each side but how do I switch from the upper to the lower?
You get curved arcs on each side of your HUD the items on the right hand arc are all triggered/fired by the primary trigger that you have bound and selected to that trigger in the fire groups menu in your righthand display by having a 1 beside them. The lefthand arc shows all the things triggered by your secondary trigger indicated by a 2 in the Fire Groups menu. The Fire Groups menu has columns for each group and moving the cursor to the next column allows you to add weapons or devices to that Fire Group. In the main menu where you set up controls there will be a way to set a button that will let you switch Fire Group by pressing that button you will be moved from one group to the next and back to the start. So you need to set up a Fire Group in that menu that has weapons on one trigger and the scanner on the other.

Thanks RJ, but I get the Fire Groups setup, what I'm wondering about is the primary and secondary slots on the arc. If I have 2 pulse lasers on one of the sides, do they both fire when the corresponding trigger is pulled? What if I have a pulse laser and a scanner on the same side - do they both trigger? If I have 2 different kinds of scanners on the same side, can I fire them both at the same time with the same trigger?
Wow, at 505k the Intermediate Scanner is out of my range for how. Does a less expensive Detailed Surface Scanner also do the functions of a Basic Discovery Scanner? Or would something like that have to be in it's own separate internal slot?
It sure seems weird that there is no in-game manual or more info to learn about this stuff. Does the PC version come with a huge 500 pg manual?

Good stuff all, thanks. Got the manual, and an Intermediate Scanner today.
Got destroyed carrying a criminal passenger when trying to land on a planet to deliver some good for another mission. So both of those missions FAILED for me, but when I took another mission to deliver stuff to the same planet I got destroyed again, saying I had an illegal passenger, even though I didn't have any passengers. Was that a glitch?
And what is the trick to taking Criminal Mastermind passengers? Silent running?
