Sothis Community Goal Guide

Not really, they are going so fast they are kept on the road by centripetal force alone :) now never mind about what happens on a revolving station when the car is going anti spin-wards...
Nothing happens, 'cause they have magnetic wheels. ;)

Hi Rapidfire, I met you in SC on my way into Newholm after my mining expedition. :)

I'm really enjoying this CG, I've done a lot of deep space exploration, Buckyball Runs to Sag A*, etc, but Sothis has a great "out on the frontier" feeling to it that's very atmospheric.

I wouldn't have had time to join the counter-piracy efforts yesterday, so I just dropped off my mining haul (only included 40t or so of gold unfortunately) and then made a third cargo hauling run to get back into the top 30%. I didn't spot any pirates on either visit anyway, although there was some salty banter in the dock at Newholm. Yar! ;)

I should have time to switch ships tonight, so I'll try to join the counter-piracy crew with my minimal pvp skills!

I was purely enjoy the moment, after I recovered of nearly crapping myself when that Fer-de-lance came at me in Sothis System lol

He saw the dashingly handsome pirate interdict you and then followed the wake. Just found it today.

It can take a couple of minutes to show up though so don't panic...

I find Oretes nearer to buy gold, it's only 344ly. (if i remember correctly)

I’m flying a T9 so does Oretes have a station selling gold rather than an outpost? Also how far is the station from the entry point?

I did more or less OK last night. The trip back to Aonikenk was uneventful but on the way back to Sothis I crashed into stars THREE times whilst fuel scooping! After the third time the hull was OK at 97% health, but the modules had been fried down to about 85% health during the microwaving you get as you spool up the FSD on the escape vector. I think 160% heat was the hottest it got.
.
It’s amazing how relaxed you can be about this when you are drunk enough and tired enough. Metaphorically walking round the ship, kicking the tyres and saying “It’s only another 100 LY, it’ll be OK”. :)
.
I had an 80,000 Cr repair bill when I got to Sothis but this was more than compensated for by the 450,000 Cr exploration data and the 700,000 Cr profit from another 480 tons of gold.
.
It is actually quite an interesting exercise to buy a cheap ship then fry it to death by flying it into a star (I did this one time after running out of fuel as it was more fun than hitting self destruct and it wasn’t worth contacting the Fuel Rats).
.
The ships take an amazing amount of punishment and scary warnings before finally giving up the ghost so after trying this you do tend to be a lot more relaxed when sparks start flying off the console in the normal course of things.

Take care frying your T9 fuel scooping and jumping. Speaking from my experience of three Buckyball Runs to Sag A*, the Cargo Hatch is always the first module take heat damage and start malfunctioning, and the malfunctions can happen while the module health is still up at around 80%.

I carried a single ton of rares (Jaques Quintentian Still) to give to CMDR Metta at Sag A* and used AFMU's to maintain the cargo hatch health above 90% all the way. On an earlier run my cargo hatch was at 1% on arrival at Sadge, while all the other modules were over 85%. CMDR Alot lost his 1t of Kitten Brand Coffee during his record breaking Buckyball Run, so I'd hate for you to have cargo hatch malfunctions with 480t of gold onboard!

Yes I have lost cargo from a T9 due to this.

Also, remember to unbind your jettison all key command or make it a double key combination or something - I have accidentally jettisoned 532T of cargo before now as well.

Never flown T9 myself, but sounds like it's a heat sponge unlike any other ship in the 'verse.

Well, you say that, but my T6 isn't quite so well built....

During a run last night, I was popping away from the console to wash the dishes during refuelling (I throttle right down close in)... bet you didn't realise the T6 had a kitchen sink (Class D2)!

Anyway, long story short, I came back to the console amidst a storm of smoke, flashy lights and warning messages, 130% heat, not sure how long it had been like that... obviously got something wrong there... Pulled up, headed away from the star as fast as I could with the failing everything.... and then.... just as the temp peaked...

Cargo Hatch Malfunction, jettisoning cargo!

And there went a third of the gold...

:(

Lesson learnt.
Huge big balls of thermonuclear fury should not be left unattended.

... almost halfway to 3rd tier ...

Slow but steady progress. ;)

You are correct there - the only module malfunction message I got was for the Cargo Hatch but fortunately nothing fell out.
.
I have to say I don't usually fly that drunk or tired and in the previous 7 or 8 runs I didn't fly into a star even once :)

I was trying to vaporise a Viper in my experiement which was actually really hard, I think I gave up and hit the self destruct after about 5 minutes.

The T6 always used to run really hot back in the Beta but I think they cooled it down at some point.

on my second run from Aonikenk in an Anaconda, i thought i'd be smart and take an 'L' shaped route to avoid most of that large brown-dwarf/t-tauri field - and on the fourth jump, landed smack bang in a binary star. the heat was up to 150% before she'd even started moving. very nervous for the rest of the trip.

Bah! Gave up my secret (and negligible) gold source because I didn't think I'd get another opportunity to use it, and they go and extend the deadline. All good for the cause, though, I guess!
