Game Discussions Space Games suggestion

Not sure about the VR part. However, these games I have played are worth a look:

Empyrion Galactic Survival - Single and coop play, also has PvP. You land, you survive, you resource, you follow the stories, build ships, ground craft, bases etc, very varied on the how to and the story you want to follow. Its a really good game.

X4 - Again you start small, spaceship based and grow, you can build space stations (fully functional), fleets, trade, war, pirate. There is a story line to follow, single player. Utterly absorbing.

NMS -- This is the best survive, grow, build, immersive story, explore, mutli-play / solo, stunning graphics, great updates, always evolving game. Worth the money. If ED and NMS had a baby I would adopt that fair haired child.

They killed my favourite game in Jan 19. BGSO. No more the Cylon, no more the 100+ a side battles. I miss it and still need to find a replacement.....

Warning, no not buy Empyrion if you are scared of spiders.

For myself:
Looking for a good roguelike here. FTL was great but too short. I want character progression - so basicall a RPG.
Crying Suns maybe?

There's also The Long Journey Home, but I haven't had the time to try it out yet.

Space Haven otherwise might be worth a look, some FTL vibes as you manage the inside of the ship(s), but it's more base-building than anything.

Someone mentioned X4.... I'll recommend X3 AP: game is polished up and there are tons of great mods.

If you haven't played KSP you must play that (read up on what mods to use - definitely mechjeb for starters).

Sorry one I forgot and i should have mentioned is Everspace, rogue like. Has a decent script, solo player, AI is hard on higher levels. You can upgrade the ship as you go, modules and upgrades, upgrades are perm, modules lost on death. Pretty game with engaging aspects. Not played Everspace 2 yet, its in early access and not yet complete but looks like a very nice upgrade from the original and will be a very good game. Flight controls are a bit meh, for me on KBM, however very playable.

I love Everspace (haven't tried 2 yet), but personally I'd argue that keyboard and mouse is the best way to play it. It controls like Descent and the ships are pretty nimble so the speed and precision of the mouse make a big difference.

I’ll give another thumb’s up to Crying Suns - works really well on tablets as well (I don’t mean playing it chemically assisted 😁).

Rebel Galaxy Outlaw is a good space shooter/trader, very much a love letter to Privateer and worth a play.

Back in VR (though in Early Access), perhaps have a look at BattleGroupVR - it’s shaping up to be a fun admiral-on-the-bridge RTS simulator, if you’ve got a Bill Adama itch to scratch.

It is not VR and it is not even 3D, but I like Heat Signature. The primary gameplay element is to infiltrate enemy ships. It is rogue-ish insofar you lose a character if they die, but that might motivate a different character to avenge that death, or there might be a mission to bust out a previously imprisoned character. It is really fun to shoot at windows and see the enemies being blown into space, while at the same time being able to use that as an exit strategy, because you can call your ship to pick you up. But it is not really a survival game.

Another 2D game is 3030 Deathwar. I would call it an Elite-like: Trade and fight in space and walk around in space stations. It even has a storyline.

Sorry that I could not provide any 3D VR games... I think that Everspace is worth a look as well.

Heat Signature is fantastic, and it makes a great little side game here and there. It's not a game I will play for hours in a row, but I will regularly come back to it and play out a new character goal or just a few missions for fun. You really want to switch characters/tools after a while to keep things fresh, there are so many approaches that it's a waste of entertainment to limit yourself to a single one.

Heat signature is good, I was quite adept at throwing stuff on CD. then glitch it back, use it and throw it again.

I can wholeheartedly suggest Empyrion: Galactic Survival as a space survival game. The survival aspects are well done, you can construct your own ships, and they act realistically depending upon thruster placement: torque is modeled in the game. This game was made by a very small team, and while they clearly compromised on certain things, they did a good job at choosing the right compromises. Such as graphics. A lot of people claim the graphics look dated... but IMO graphics don't make a game, and it can frequently look stunning. And the sheer variety of building components you have access means you can really greeble your bases, ships, and ground vehicles to your hearts content.

Space Engineers is also very good, though its very light on the survival aspects. Its strength comes into the engineering aspects of the game, as well as its own internal scripting language for advanced functions, and IMO the wheeled vehicles in the game are second to none in the class. It has a very limited selection of blocks to choose from, many of which are available only via DLCs (there's about $40 of DLC currently). Its biggest failing IMO is that their thruster modeling is a bit... wonky. When the ship is a solid piece, torque from thrusters isn't modeled. When the ship contains subgrids (such as a folding landing gear) you can easily start losing control of your ship while under gravity.

As for No Man's Sky... a big aspect of survival games for me is playing them Iron Man, which for me means the early portion of the game must be replayable. NMS's early game is an unskippable tutorial, which is not at all fun. Combine that with how poorly the difficulty levels scale IMO, poorly implemented procedural generation, the artificialness of their environments in general, and IMO questionable decisions regarding their VR implementation, and its a game that I set aside after about 30 hours of playing. Thank goodness I bought it on a Steam Sale. YMMV

Next up is Surviving Mars, which is a city building/management hybrid kind of game. This is one of the few games I actively chased achievements, because getting many of them were interesting in their own right. This game has several major DLC which improve the game, and several “cosmetic” DLCs that aren’t actually cosmetic, because of they alter how the game is played. Quite frankly, I consider them an example of “pay to win” in single player games, and an example of how giving to player demands can change the game for the worse. Disabling the “cosmetic” DLCs makes the game much more fun IMO. YMMV. The game was considered “completed” by its original developer about a year ago, but it’s publisher brought in a new team recently to work on the game.

And finally, I can't recommend Kerbal Space Center highly enough. It's not a survival game like the rest, but realistically modeled physics and orbital mechanics, combined with a quirky brand of humor and a tendency for things to go hilariously (and explosively) wrong... and you've got an instant classic. They recently announced their last major update to the game, in honor of its 10 year anniversary. This update will include two things that were the last remaining “must have” mods: an alarm clock, and an orbital maneuver planning tool to go along with it. With this, the team is moving on to work on Kerbal Space Center 2’s development.

Can someone expand more on X4? It has been lauded around these forums but everything I look up, seems like the game isn't very visually appealing. That's the thing about space games for me. They need to be visually appealing. I love NMS and to an extent (due to Odyssey), Elite Dangerous. I just want to make sure that maybe I've just seen videos from people with poop setups.

Since the OP mentioned survival, I'll recomend Empyrion: Galactic Survival. Alternatively you may want to take a look at NMS, but EGS is more focused on survival aspects.

I don't know what you mean, the gfx are pretty solid out in space. It only plays out in space though. No atmospheric landings. And it's a business sim mostly. A dynamic economy with supply and demand prices and dynamic conflicts driven by that. Or vice versa. You can play it as action game but the economic sim is probably one of the most advanced ones out there.
