[Speculation] Commanders, no walking inside your ships for Odyssey

I'm just going by how the game works at the moment. I don't expect anything radically different from the developers based on what I've seen so far. They have made a game that is mainly based on procedural planet generation technology. That's their trick.

I don't expect a clone of what Star Citizen has been promising all these years, not on FD's budget. Remember we would need dedicated servers for up to 16 players for decent quality multiplayer FPS. What we have right now, and I doubt this will change is the cheaper to run P2P networking system where 4 v 4 is about the optimum number of players for an instance and if some of those players are on the other side of the world, well if you've had this experience you would know what the problems are. It's difficult to get more than 8 players into an instance and when you do the lag is appauling. You can already investigate a derelict, in space and on the ground. We will probably be able to hang around with our crew at formal meeting places on standard planetery bases and outposts in Odyssey, going by the concept art.

But how do you propose to board another ship? Commit sabotage? How would these activities play out? These are questions which are difficult to answer and it's all just theorycrafting with nothing concrete as far as I can see.

I think we just need to be realistic in our expectations. We can't rule out ship interiors completely, but personally my opinion is it's going to be unlikely and I base my assumptions on observation of this and other games.
You'r comparison with SC IS irrelevant cause it was also " promised" by Frontier since kickstarter they said it was one of their goals.

that's all very true, but an assault on a ship is actually an excellent excuse to cluster a small and manageable handful of players in an instance for some action (as opposed to void space where everyone should be seeing everyone else).

no, i won't until it supports vr which might be a long while away.

theorycrafting is all we're doing here! :ROFLMAO:

that's a different issue. my expectations are zero, see above. we're just talking. i don't need to 'salvage my elite experience' with new stuff frontier wants to throw at me just to make it last longer. for me the elite experience is complete with horizons, i play much less but i still do and it's ok. IF frontier does something super cool in the future i might revisit.

doesn't mean there wouldn't be valid gameplay possibilities for ship interiors, which is all i said. again, proper infrastructure and design is needed for that and we don't have that, neither inside ships nor outside. so ... 🤷‍♂️

Yes I've seen the video, 7 years ago. I even mentioned it earlier in this thread and don't need to watch it again to remember what was promised. My comparison is not irrelevent because in case you hadn't noticed there is a big difference between the budgets of Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous.

Have you ever tried to use a 3D graphics development tool? Do you know what is involved in the creation of 3D assets? Perhaps like me you may dabbled in it for a while and got frustrated and gave up because it's rather difficult. I have watched videos of people using 3D design tools on youtube and I still think it's difficult and very time consuming, even when you are a professional and know exactly what you are doing.

Say you have 100 designers each on £30,000 a year salary. I realise that it costs more than this but without looking up the average cost of a workstation which is a lot more than £30,000 a year, taking into account office rent, admin staff ect, if it was just 100 x 30,000 thats already £3m a year. And FDev have to turn a profit, because they have shareholders to pay dividends to as well as personel costs. Think about the recent release of fleet carriers and all the work that must have gone into them, there are maybe 13 - 15,000 FCs purchased in game, so say 100% of us spent on average £10 on cosmetics that's still only £150,000 profit, which I would guess is not very much money in the computer game design world and might possibly have covered their expenses or not, I don't know for sure.

The above represents a great simplification of what is going on, not all developers are going to be on £30,000 salary, some will be on more than that depending on experience, £30,000 is just the average pay for a computer coder in the UK.

Now look at Star Citizen, if you have been following it, and observe how long it takes the design team to develop the interior of just one single large spaceship and I'm sure you will realise the magnetude of the labour that is involved. I know I'm only a gamer not a game programmer or designer, but I am observant, and I am a realist. So my gut feeling says that it's unlikely we will get ship interiors unless significant changes are made to the game that add meaningful gameplay. I do not see any meaningful gameplay exhibited in the videos on Star Citizen that are set on board large ships. In fact some of the interiors don't seem to have been very well designed for multiplayer boarding and defending.

I am looking forward to playing Odyssey, it won't cost me any more, I was a beta backer. And I can't wait to start taking screenshots of new alien worlds with atmospheres and enjoying the graphical improvements that are being made to planetary generation. But I'm not going to be disapointed if I don't get to walk around inside my Anaconda, because I know I will get bored of that very quickly.

I can make coffee and hamburgers at home. Real coffee, and real hamburgers. Wake up and smell it.

It's that video again....
There are others, and artworks... It doesn't mean it has to be included in oddyssey but saying there is no gameplay and Frontier Never talked about is juste false.
They even Say "not at launch" for Oddyssey which mens they still want to do it sometime in the futur.
