Spring 2024 DLC Speculation

Was looking through the ocelot discussion and realized I forgot to ask something

@jcp011c @Markiz @Fini @KönigDerKaffeebohnen @markun @NachoB @Tinou97 ….How would you guys feel about the margay instead of the ocelot? Fills a similar niche but looks just a bit weirder and cuter. Might be more interesting.

I agree with those who would prefer more new world monkeys and birds than another cat though— and especially the Brazilian porcupine which someone mentioned. It actually has always been one of my most wished-for animals. But I wonder how much justice frontier would do it. (For instance, even after the redesign, the binturong is still a bit… ehh… some weird and unique animals require very precise models, vocals, and animation to capture what is so special about them. )

I also find it bizarre we got the caracal over the serval, since servals are so much more fun to look at. If we get ocelot and caracal but not serval, it would feel weird to me.
Why?
Just why?
Why the margay if its an ocelot but no water , no desert and smaller range?

That would be my thoughts, being quirky for the sake of not doing the expected even if the expected would just be better

Honestly that also basicly sums up my feelings for last years packs lol

In all seriousness, that makes sense; I didn’t realize margays were so different when it comes to habitat and water. I’m curious which species from last years’ packs you thought were too weird and quirky. Though, I think I could make general guesses, like some of the weirdly numerous ungulates in the arid pack.

The packs themself.
I dont have to much issues with most animals chosen individually, besides the black rhino, sand cat and sloth bear (exhibits all sucked though besides the tortoise), but how they actually layed them out and what they chose to focus on.

Tropical should have been an animal pack, should have focused on south anerica and should have brought something new.
Instead we got gibbon 2, tropical pig 3, a monitor which value could have been achieved by giving the nile monitor deep diving and the fossa.
Imagine the gibbon was a new world monkey and the monitor the victoria crowned pidgeon, aswell as the sloth the right one.

Pack fixed

Arid?
Why is it a north africa focus?
Why does it focus on north africa without actually including the baboon and the tortoise?
Why are there 5 ungulates and a freacking cat?

Keep the Dromedary and Porcupine, add the baboon, tortoise, perentie, yellow footed rock wallaby and either collared peccary (best animal of last year) or any of the arid animals we cut and we got a pack with the same number of "clones" that isnt a middle finger to the expected desert biome pack.

Oceania.....is fine. Spectacle bat sucks, so many cool and common exhibits and we get a meaningless flying fox, even if this wasnt birds just imagine getting the tuatara for example here or a frilled lizard. Wasted opportunity.
Otherwise idk not the pack for me but it wasnt meant to be and thats cool.
Pack had a vision and deliverd it.

Eurasia is so so close to be great, literally just swap out the sloth bear and maybe saiga for a monkey or bird and thats a banger pack.
Gray hulman and western cappercallie would be my choices, but any pheasent and the golden snub nose monkey would also have worked wonders.

Peccary was the best animal of the year, followed by wisent and wild boar so no complains there :)

Id actually prefer the margay over the ocelot for basicly one reason: its a true small cat.
Ocelots are surprisingly large, almost clouded leopard sized. So i would group them as a medium sized cat, of which we got a few now with lynx, clouded and caracal. While the sandcat stands alone as our only small one. So getting the margay over the ocelot would round out the cat roster a little bit nicer imo.
But in the end i cant really say i have either of them particulary high on my prio list

Really good points, those changes would make things so much better

The Arid pack could have been soooo much better. Biggest missed opportunity in the 3 year history of planet zoo, a pack like this would be the best ever:
  • Dromedary
  • African Crested Porcupine
  • Hamadryas Baboon
  • Secretary Bird
  • Somali Wild Ass
  • Nile Crocodile
  • Honey Badger
And I dont know what held Frontier back from making this..

People asking for more African ungulates + Africa pack complaints about the scenery not matching the animal lineup + middle east representation

The production "cost" that the porcupine assumeably sucked up. Which caused the other animals to be on the simple side

I know it's a meme but yes, it is quite literally not how they should have done it. Doing a good pack isn't just adding highly requested species but species that add something to the game. Like I have said many times the additions in the packs need to have some actual use, and most of this year's packs have failed to do that because they were centered more about adding animals for the sake of "we finally get this one" rather than "we finally get this one because we need it for this".

  • The tropical pack would have been good if instead of the water monitor we had a muntjac, which is literally the only SEA animal left with a useful niche. Nile monitor remains without deep diving. The gibbon and the pig were a different flavor for something we already had, while nice, not something incredibly worth.
  • I don't think the arid pack needs any explanation why it was not good, once again it would have been a fantastic pack if they had added a baboon and a sulcata tortoise instead of the addax and the dama gazelle, which ultimately add nothing because we already have the scimitar oryx.
  • Oceania would be perfect if it had been a tree kangaroo instead of the quokka, and yet, it is still the best pack of the year IMO.
  • As much as I love the Eurasia pack for giving us waterfowl all the other animals aside the wolverine were really bland additions that don't stand out at all, specially the wisent which for some reason is the key art animal, making the pack even more unappealing to regular people. Honestly, they should have ditched the wisent for a bunny, the pack would have improved tenfold.

I think in the Eurasia pack, stuff like the sloth bear, the wisent and the wild boar are the clear reflection of the issue with the packs. The sloth bear specially is a perfect example: an animal that looks gorgeous ingame and was quite requested, yet in the end its addition was simply for the sake of having it, not because having it brings something particularly interesting. It really isn't hard to see why less people will buy these packs when they can be summed as "it's a neat animal I like :)"

Like look at the swan, swans are cool but they are nowhere close to be an animal that sparks fascination in a lot of people as much as a bear would do, yet it is to many the only reason why the Eurasia pack has any value. And I am honestly not sure if Frontier has not realized this yet, or if they actually have but they just want to keep it as the bare minimum.

PS: Frontier give us rabbits come on...
Our world is a great place because we can have so many extremely different opinions. I could not disagree more with nearly all what you have written.
Maybe it’s so hard to create a perfect pack because people want totally different things and the key is to balance it right 🤷🏽

As much as you may have a different opinion the packs are objectively doing worse, and you cannot deny that.

That’s a very subjective opinion unless we have a direct sales data to sustain that.
Also they’ve put all high ticket animals in the base game and first 8 packs so what can we expect really?
Howler monkey would never compete with snow leopard in wider audience popularity. That’s just how it is.
I am happy with all new animals and the roster of Eurasia pack is one of my favorites for sure. But sloth bear would never make as many people happy as polar bear and most animals that we want now are quite niche for the general audience.
Don’t get me wrong because I’m glad you have a different opinion on that.

Instead we got gibbon 2, tropical pig 3, a monitor which value could have been achieved by giving the nile monitor deep diving and the fossa.
But it’s not frontiers fault lol The community put these animals at the top of the meta wishlist. Fossa, Sloth, RRH and the gibbon I believe was still up there, so in hindsight, this pack should’ve been really good, which I still think it was, because if it was an animal pack, we would miss out on all the Asian scenery which is extremely useful imo.

Spectacle bat sucks
just imagine getting the tuatara for example here or a frilled lizard.
At least they gave us a Walkthrough exhibit, there was no way frontier would make everyone happy in this situation other than adding birds which they obviously didn’t for whatever reason. If they added a lizard, people would complain there’s no WTE animal.

Or maybe the mascot of the entire pack they forgot (summon @Britches )

I'm open to the Margay. In fact I just want a small cat for SA.
But tbh I wouldn't mind if we don't even have a cat for a new SA pack because they seem quite easy to do by modders so I'd prefer developers to focus on monkeys 🙂

I still prefer the ocelot. It's range extends into NA and lives in a lot of different habitats so to me is more useful. That said if we get the margay in it's place i won't be as upset as if they replace it for something like an andean cat or the jaguarundi i will. But really i rather they not doing a small cat at all if it is not the ocelot and just add something else like monkey, bird or Tamandua.
