Spring dlc Speculation 2023

Anecdotal but I saw them in a rainforest in Bolivia (also in the Pantanal but that isn't proper rainforest). And the internet (and distribution map) say they live across several biomes including rainforests.

According to wikipedia page about neotropical biomes this should be current rainforest distribution within howler range. (Light green is mato grosso seasonal forest)
Everything else is either dry forest or some sort of woodland.

Guys, these are basically repositories where they push their work on. It's all it is. You can use this as an indication that something is coming but that's really all you can do with it. There's no such thing as "they should update it next week if the date is really the 4th of April". There really isn't, don't read so much into it 😅

I can 100% guarantee to you here that the devs who are reading this are probably laughing because you're trying to read something in that. I know that I would if people would look at how often our branches get updated 😂

At the end of the day people can do with this info what they will, but this seems to be as clear of a pattern as we can get, pretty much as clear as the 4 DLCs per year pattern. (Yes yes, first year we got three but that was around the COVID times).

I'm putting a hell of a lot more faith into the fact that each Spring DLC so far has been released in the week of Easter than whether or not a branch of a repository got updated :p
yeah, sorry I just don't people's to already say the dlc not going to be in early of april, and thne everyone is upset and such but I get what you trying to say, sorry of course It's not confirmed or anything like that It's just speculation, this is what all this thread for. but yeah, so just when it will happen that when it will happen, but at some point it will happen

And since I don't think Frontier necessarily cares about whether or not an animal also can be found in none Island areas, the Crab-eating macaque also seems like another likely and decent candidate. A big part of its range are covering islands and it is often associated with tourist islands in Asia.

While the color is similar to the Japanese macaque it got a long tail to make it appear different from it and has different biome needs.

For the howler discussion I feel like the reason the black howler became the most talked about is simply because it's by far the most common one in zoos and has interesting sexual dimorphism. Frontier could surprise us with the red howler though which would be just as fine.

What island monkeys would be worth including?
Sulawesi black mscaque is a great candidate. It would be an easy reskin to make from the macaque rig, while still being very visually distinct, common in zoos, and critically endangered.
The East Javan langur would be my preference. I think we are more in need of small primates.

If you make the tree kangaroo a tanuki, a Scottish wildcat, or a Sumatran tiger instead, which I think would be more likely than the kangaroo. Then that is the true nightmare.
The devil, fossa, and kiwi are all somewhat understandable inclusions for PZ, (though the kiwi is a weird priority in a game with less than 10 birds) and in an Island Animal Pack, I would not really mind any of them. But in a scenery pack where the fourth spot risk going to something pointless, then this trio just feels like it won't bring much to the game.
And then add some Easter Island-themed animal statues on top of it...
This take I 100% agree with. I get it that carnivorans are one of the more popular groups of animals, but when half or more of a new DLC consists of species from this group it starts to become overly repetitive and only serving to a portion of the PZ community. Similarly, the same thing can also be said for ungulates that come from taxonomic families already present in PZ. And unfortunately, it seems like that’s exactly what Frontier prefers to do when you look at the roster choices they’ve made for nearly all of last year’s DLCs.

The Twilight pack only had one habitat species that wasn’t a carnivoran (and the whole DLC strictly consisted of mammals). The Conservation Pack introduced an ungulate from a family already represented in PZ and the final big cat species (the big cats are the only taxonomic group to have literal complete representation in PZ and even have multiple subspecies present), and then we got the P. Horse (a species from a taxonomic genus already represented in PZ). Leaving the Siamang to be the only taxonomically and physiologically distinct pick in the pack. And the recent Grasslands Animal Pack continued with this trend, featuring 3 carnivorans species (all from families already represented in PZ), and an ungulate species from a genus that already has representation in PZ. Meaning that only 3 of the 4 habitat species were from taxonomic orders with minimal representation in PZ.

I’m not trying to imply that any of the species from the above packs were bad picks. What I am saying though is that majority of our DLC rosters are dominated largely by carnivorans and ungulate families/genus that already have representation in PZ. It’d be nice for Frontier to break from this pattern again this year, at least once. The last time we got a DLC roster that wasn’t nearly or over majority carnivorans/represented ungulate families was the Australia Pack. If Frontier brought in even just one more pack with a different roster lineup for the fans out there that would rather see species from taxonomic orders and families outside of carnivorans/already represented ungulate families, it’d do wonders taxonomically speaking.

An islands DLC would be the perfect opportunity for Frontier to break away from their pattern too, as most species endemic to these isolated areas tend to not be carnivorans or large ungulates.

Again, I’m not saying there is anything wrong with carnivorans or ungulates. They are both popular groupings of animals that can be found in nearly all zoos. But when every DLC is filled majority by these two groups, it leaves a lot left to be desired from other taxonomic orders of animals as many other common-in-captivity groups have little-to-no representation currently in a game that was intended to have a large focus on conservation and zoological education. Majority of the planet’s endangered ecosystems and even most zoological collections are, percentage-wise, not primarily made up of carnivorans and large ungulates.

Hey i got fun idea for everyone. In contrast to the nightmare ideas yoav_r brought up, what would be your absolute dream. You don't have to worry about how long things would take to develop or what the community would like. Just strictly what would be the perfect pack for you?

Honestly it would have been useful if animal packs stuck to a format like:

1 ungulate
1 carnivore
1 primate
1 "other" mammal
1 habitat bird
1 habitat reptile
1 spare slot for a "double"
1 exhibit

I think that would have solved a lot of the problems we have currently.

Mabey swap out primate for aboreal mammal cause primates wouldn't fit in the NA animal pack for example.

Peccary instead of Red River Hog. I really do not hope. The Rest would be fine for me even when I am the opinion 3 monkeys are too much. I would choose the Ocelot. I know, another cat but I do Not mind. We still have 2 high-ranked Cats which are Not in the Game. I think the Peccary would also Work fine in a drylands Pack.
