SQUAD

I just found out about Squad, it is a FPS placed in that elusive middle ground between ArmA and the more arcade CoD/BF series. From what I can see they have actually succeeded to get that compromise avoiding all the gung ho running and bunny hoping everywhere, ultra spawn arcade experience of the latter without bogging you down with the milsim details of the former. The usual control point logic works similar to other games but in Squad the sides actually have to manage a resource economy and supply lines and to build defensive or offensive structures, with leader roles that seem to matter in order to prevail.

This game is still in early access but supposed to launch this year and its community is playing it as it was already there anyways, tournaments and all.

I never cared much for multiplayer FPS games due to what you have exactly described, "ultra-spawn bunny-hopping" lowest common denominator gameplay, which make battles feel as much like battles as carnival bumper cars feels like driving a F1 car... But I must say I'm quite intrigued by this particular game.

While pure FPS shooters was never my favorite genre by a long shot, I did enjoy the more tactical FPS games, like the Swat franchise (which I loved), or similar themed tactical/squad management war games like Band of Brothers, earlier Ghost Recon games, or the old Vietcong games. Anyway these are all single-player titles. If Squad is somewhat in the spirit of these games I mentioned, Im might be tempted to buy it.

It could be a good thing Arma has been infested by mostly un-mature players, and the game still got huge problems with FPS drop during gameplay. It’s really annoying to go from 60+ FPS to a slideshow.

If you want strictly coop tactical experience SQUAD is a win win over Arma (unless you are able to coordinate a game session with your buddies). There are still mil sim servers of course but the "Altis life" crowd is taking over. Also the Arma engine is ancient and from what I read there is very little that they can do to make it perform better in the future.

I still play the Squad mod of 'Post scriptum' now and then when the mood takes me...to be fair, I never got into Squad as I prefer the historical WWII thing overall.

Having been a soldier all my life, Squad was frustrating for me, playing it was like being a professional builder and watching DIY amateurs building a house...all the tools but not the knowledge to use them, it just cuts against the grain for me....may sound pretentious even though it's not intended as such... it's kinda hard to explain.

Play it off and on. Been a while. Interested to see how helicopters will fit into overall map dynamic. Maps aren't really that large thh.

Not really sure if the actual Canadian maps extension is larger than the original maps, but the distances you have to leg often seem so large that I am sure at least those maps should benefit from heli transport gameplay.

Can recommend. It's like a way less clunky and more concentrated ARMA. That doesn't describe it perfectly, but it's that kind of game. Perhaps on a slightly casual side of milsims, which is one of it's strengths since the game is quite approachable. Do not buy this if you want to run around solo like an 80s action hero, you will have no impact on the game :)
