News Squadron Leaderboards - Season One ends soon!

Greetings Commanders,

The release of Beyond - Chapter Four brought many changes and improvements to the core Elite Dangerous gameplay experience; one of those changes was the introduction of Squadrons and Squadron Leaderboards.

With the first Season of Squadron Leaderboards coming to an end, we wanted to give you a little recap on what they are and how they work!

You can see the Squadron Leaderboards by heading to your Squadrons page, which is found in the in-game interface’s right hand panel. On this page you will also find clear instructions on how to join or set up a Squadron, too!

Topping the Charts - Season One of Squadrons Leaderboards

For a Squadron to appear on one of the Leaderboard categories, all members have to do is engage in that particular activity. The categories are:
  • Xeno Defence
  • Combat
  • CQC
  • Exploration
  • Political
  • Powerplay
  • Trade

At the end of each Season (roughly two months in length), we will see who is in the bronze, silver and gold positions of each category (per platform) and reward each member of the Squadron with an in-game trophy to proudly display on their cockpit dashboard (we've provided some examples for you below). Those winning Squadrons will also receive the appropriate medal added to their Hall of Fame!

Squadron Leaderboards Trophies (Examples)

Bronze

Season One of the Squadrons Leaderboards is due to end on Thursday 7 February, so take a look in-game at the current standings and see what you can do to push your Squadron to that top spot!

Season Two will begin immediately as Season One closes, and the Squadrons Leaderboards will be reset back to zero. The top three Squadrons in each category will see their bronze, silver or gold medals added to the Hall of Fame section of their Squadron page, and the dashboard trophies will be added to the Squadron members' accounts automatically.

There's not much time left till Season One ends, so make every action count, Commanders!

Nice, and flimley points all round for the winners. Meanwhile, I’ve done absolutely nothing and can’t understand why I didn’t win. :S

Sooooo - are the trophies for all leaderboards the same? So we just need to win a gold / silver / bronze and then we're done?

The Leaderboards are a great Idea but only the 500 Squadrons will win them always. So every "Season" the 3 biggest Squadrons will win it. Sounds fair... sounds exciting... not really... What about the Top 10? Or the Top 25? They get anything? Maybe it's worth thinking about this because working in a 2-3 month competition were you never will have a chance to win anything sounds boring for most of the (not 500 Member)-Squadrons. Maybe you can discuss this topic in an internal meeting @Will Flanagan?

As an explorer who is part of Distant Worlds 2. How are explorers going to add the bobble head to their ship if you can only add bobble heads when docked?

Could we instead have a badge that can be added to our Holo-Me's, which are accessible while in the black?

And why a bobble head, and not a ship decal which others players can see?

I tend to agree this is a possibility and regardless of what happens, people who can commit most hours to the game will always win out. Such is life but maybe it could be thought about as a special?

Squadron points total divided by number of players in group, gives a per head score that could give smaller groups a chance .. and total points divided by total hours played by group and then by player number in group, gives a 'most efficient squad in the galaxy' metric, maybe as a special prize awarded in a rolling category? Gives small groups a look in anyway.

Good luck to all ..

I think we're (squadron: Gnosis) hovering about the 400th place mark in most categories (there are five of us) which I also kind of like (as a suggestion anyway to arithmetic boffins anyway) as polymath, average across board. They used to call this Valedictorian, highest in class but across all subjects iirc.

Not if you divide by hours played too I think, as highest total per player per hour in season, I believe would work.

Just a suggestion (and not saying it should be made every season either) but special mentions do help inclusivity a bit. A 500 squad can't include new members, even if you wanted to join up later for the social and first come first served is a thing in other aspects (first mapper/first found) that squads could counter (per player per hour could be won by a squadron accepting an extremely talented noob in first season potentially). o7

Anyway, it's just a suggestion. The leaderboard's a good thing so .. Bonne Chance.

It depends on the leaderboard - some are more competitive than others. For trade, combat or exploration, sure, those are big numbers games where your score basically just goes up from having members who play the game and you need to be big to win. The other four there's definitely room for smaller groups to grab a prize, at least for now, by focusing some dedicated effort on it.

For example: my squadron is currently leading on one specialist leaderboard, by a large enough margin we're very confident in keeping that position in the remaining days, and we have just over twenty members. But the activity that counts for the leaderboard is "what we do" as a player group - and what we've been doing for years before there were leaderboards for it - so we've got twenty members putting in more points each than most entire squadrons together.

I think we probably need to see more types of specialised leaderboards where a mid-sized squadron could really make a play for the top by going all out for it, while a 500-strong squadron is never going to be organised enough (and, well, fair play to them if they are!).

There could even be per-season specials: e.g. season 4 leaderboard for the most rares delivered to the Crab Nebula, season 5 leaderboard for the most Security Firmware Patch collected/traded for, season 6 leaderboard for the largest number of mollusc research samples sold, etc. Make them specific enough not to just be numbers games, vary the gameplay each time to suit various styles of play, let the mid-sized groups pick a season that looks good for them and really push it.

Great system ....
Only the big squadron will win and it will always be the same winner each season.....
I tend to agree, not a fan of this "only top 3 squads win a prize" thing :(
The big squads seem to be way on top in this.

Is there really nothing more involved, significant and interesting that can be designed and developed for Squadrons than (grind) leader boards? - Am I the only one shaking my head with this sort of stuff getting added? :(

I take it that we, as CMDRs, get the trophy and keep it in our stash even if we change squadrons? I'm currently in the DW squadron, which is set to win exploration (not too suprising). But since DW2 is a timed event I'm not sure if I'll stay with that squadron after all is done. Can you confirm that I will keep my trophy after leaving/joining another squadron? Thanks.

Not if you divide by hours played too I think, as highest total per player per hour in season, I believe would work.

Dividing by hours played would leave the trade prize open to the squadron leader of a one member squadron loading up their cutter full of Void Opals before the start of the new quarter then selling them in seconds (and not playing on that CMDR at all for the rest of the quarter) - resulting in a division by a number significantly less than one which could end up multiplying efficiency by a factor of 60 or more. ;)

Hi Will,

It appears that trading (selling cargo) gives points per transaction, rather than for the volume traded or the profit made. For example, selling 100T of Cargo one tonne at a time provides 100x as many points as selling that cargo in one 100T transaction. Are there any plans to change this in Season 2, so that groups which play the system in this way are not rewarded for this type of behaviour?
