Horizons SRV controls

Maybe it's just me, but the more I drive the SRV, the more the controls kind of grate on me. At first, I just thought it just took getting used to, but now, I should be used to it and it's still annoying. The steering is super twitchy for one. Plus, It feels like there's a ten foot long loose rubber band between my controls and the engine, pull a little and nothing happens, then, suddenly, WOT, then try to slow down and it's suddenly in full reverse. And why does it go WOT every time you hit a rock or the tires leave the ground? That makes no sense either. Maybe it's just just because I'm playing KBAM, but I think it needs some adjustable response settings. What does everybody else think, and is it better with a stick?

Have you never gone airborne in a car? I have once: I was going way too fast for the road (75 mph), and hit a metal plate of an expansion joint, that was on a slight bump, where a bridge met the road. I was only maybe half a foot off of the ground (at most), but without the friction of the road, engine revved to redline and wheel speed sensors thought that I was going 140 mph.

Thankfully, I landed safely, and can tell you that the answer is friction.

You use what, kb+m or gamepad? It's fine with a stick, the throttle is a bit tricky yes. Switching to turret is too, because then I switch to kb+m. For cruising and parcour stick is best.

Get a feel for the rocks you should not hit and you're good. I usually drive around or jump over them. Go higher g and it'll have a lot better traction.

You need to turn off 'Drive Assist' it is terrible. Once it's off the SRV is quite good to drive.

I use an Xbox controller and pedals for the SRV, it's a good combo.

I recommend using pedals... I used the twist axis on my joy stick for a long and it tended to be twitchy but better than using keys. The Rudder pedals have a longer range in them which takes out the twitchiness and improves the controllability considerably. You definitely want to drive with drive assist off.

I had some complaint posts about the control and how everything seemed so loose, and it was entirely my use of keyboard/mouse. The problem is that when you press "A" to turn, for instance, you're essentially turning the wheel as far left as possible instantly while still going forward at a high rate of speed. This causes the vehicle to spin out really easily. So, what I did was remap my controls to my HOTAS setup, and the analog control (as well as driving slower when turning) made all the difference. Also, don't use drive assist, rotate yourself and kill your engine when airborne so that when you land, both your left and right sides touch down and aren't accelerating.

Yeah, but when they contact the ground again, they should slow down again. Unless you've changed the throttle position, you shouldn't take off like it does. And that still doesn't explain why it goes WOT when you hit something.

Hmmm....I'll try DA off, maybe that will help.

A few things that help me:

Note: I use a Thrustmaster HOTAS X.

1)Turn off Flight Assist ASAP.

2) Map the rocker on the throttle to steering. This will let you drive your SRV completely by the throttle if you want/need to.

3) Map Yaw Twist on the stick to steering (if you have it). This is much more comfortable to me than the default, which maps it to roll.

4) When switching to turret mode, take your hand off the stick and put it on a mouse. Remap all relevant aiming, firing, targeting, and scanning functions to the mouse. Since you remapped your throttle for steering earlier, you can easily do this.

5) Light landings don't hurt, even if they're really fast or from really high up. To that end, boost before you hit the ground, and it helps to throw out a few short bursts of boost while you're airborne.

6) You can jump rocks with the boost without affecting your velocity too much. Aim for the flat spots between rock clusters.

7) Use the handbrake to slow down (especially at speed). It keeps you from spinning out. You can flip your ship this way if you do it wrong. Just need to practice.

8) You are not stuck. You don't need to blow yourself up. (in 99% of cases, at least). You can use boost to give yourself some airtime, and then push forward or backward on the stick to right yourself.

9) Physical Collisions aren't affected by your shield at all. Make sure you have all pips to ENG while driving around so you can boost at will. Make sure you put pips in SYS when you're fighting something (when you will want to be in turret mode).

I'm quite sure it will.

Okay, I tried turning the "assist horrible driving" setting off And that helped immensely, so thanks to everyone that suggested that. I guess since FA actually helps make things easier, I assumed DA did the same, so it never occurred to me to turn it off. Much better now. I just thought the controls were stupid, turns out it was me that was stupid (it's happened before).:D

I actually kept the controls to was set by default (FA was off) and they work perfectly. It just takes a little bit of time getting used to the different buttons and axis for acceleration, braking, and shooting but is great once you've driven around for a bit.

Note: I use a logitech gamepad which is a similar design as an xbox gamepad
