SRV vs Sidewinder?

Plodding around a POI site last night in the SRV gathering materials, I noticed a couple of yellow blobs on the HUD radar. On closer investigation these turned out to be a wing of 2 AI pirates hovering above the surface in Sidewinders. They ignored me and I ignored them but I did get to wondering if I had engaged, how the battle might have gone? The sidewinder is a puny little ship but could probably still wipe out a SRV with one or two laser bursts. the cannon on the SRV is quite short range, as I had already found out in a skirmish with three skimmers guarding a red zone crash site (they peeled 40% off my hull before I could finish them). Just wondered if anyone has attempted - and survived - such an encounter?

I don't think there is a single ship in Elite I would call "puny" or "little".
Sidewinder size: 14.9m x 21.3m x 5.4m

IMHO ships have a hard time shooting SRVs, as they are small (unless they use a splashy weapon like missiles). So you can often survive an attack in your SRV, though I've never tried to take out an attacking ship.

I took a mission this morning to disable a settlement power grid on the dark side of a 0.3G moon - a system defence force Viper was circling above and engaged my SRV once I’d done the naughty deed.

Thankfully the Viper was only rated Harmless so its aim wasn’t up to much; with power split between shields and engines I managed to clear the exclusion zone, recall the ship and board without my SRV taking damage. It was a nice light show on the way back to the ship though.

As for fighting back with the SRV...I wouldn’t bother :) If you find a parked ship on the surface you can start shooting it with your SRV and it will ignore you. At the rate at which you can damage it, it’s like trying to smash a brick with a toffee hammer.

Quoted from wiki:

"The Scarab's plasma repeater turret fires 498rpm (8.3/s), dealing 1.2 kinetic damage per shot, has a maximum range of 800 meters, a falloff start range of 200m, and a maximum capacity of 2,000 rounds. The turret is fairly inaccurate unless manually controlled; the crosshair will shakily 'walk' around the target in a clockwise direction. Assuming manual control of the turret makes it far more accurate, and is strongly recommended for engaging fast-moving targets like Skimmers at shorter ranges, as the turret operates much like a gimbal-mounted weapon when operated from the driver's seat. The plasma repeaters are technically capable of destroying smaller ships, but this requires sustained fire and a relatively stationary target; it can take over 500 shots (a quarter of the Scarab's reserve) to destroy even a humble Eagle MkII. "

Someone must have tried it once :)

A harmless defence force Viper? I think you just ruined someone's first day on the job ;)

“Okay rookie, nice easy job for you - fly a standard patrol over the base, look menacingly at anything that approaches, see you in a few hours.”

“WHAT DO YOU MEAN, “THEY BLEW UP THE POWER GRID”?! WHAT THE...? WHO’S “THEY”?...
What was it, a high speed dumb-fire missile run? Rail-snipe from beyond the perimeter...?
...a WHAT? Are you SHI>brzzzt<ING ME? Tell me you at least destroyed them...
...WHAT DO YOU MEAN, “THEY KEPT MOVING AROUND”?!...Look, just get back here, I want to discuss this face-to-face.”

“Yes, put me through to the HR department...Hi, I’ve got a volunteer for the cargo tank cleaning effort in Wiley Port, Teveri...”

You can survive using evasive manoeuvres unless the AI has railguns. They have such incredible accuracy, they could light your cigarette.
