Stalker 2

Patch 1.2 has arrived.

Just not on GOG yet. Irritatingly.

!! 115.6Gb !! ETA 6-7 hours time...

e. And a day later it's time for 1.2.1 (I'm guessing)... ...at only 7.28Gb...

e2. Post these two updates it is noticeable that the fan on my graphics card is only rarely coming on...

Patch 1.3 is here with over 1200 changes, fixes, and improvements, related to AI/A-Life, Balance, Story Progression, Performance, Locations, Audio — well, all aspects of the game you can name.

84Gb on GOG - AKA 4 hours at my download speed.

117.98 Gb for this.

I'm struggling to think that it's worth it... and have parked this game for now. Let's hope that we get a NewGame+ option. Sometime.

I do still have fun in S2. But then I'm not playing the game, merely enjoying being in the zone.

...an emission? Find cover and hide, and wait... good luck stalker.....

Patch 1.5 — Guns & Looting Update

On GOG it's 77Gb - I'm downloading now, whilst also feeling only a mild inclination to perhaps start a new game and see how things feel now. This is not a criticism, I've 190 hours in the game, so have more than got my value out of it.

It's mostly fixes and improvements, but probably critical for the game's longer term is:

"Shape the Zone your way with the Zone Kit! Unleash your tinkering nature and modify existing content or create something new — animations, weapons, mechanics, and even wonders of the Zone. Official Mod Support is here..."

Given how active the modding comminity was (I include myself there), it will be interesting to see what they come up with.

I really need to play this... too many cool games to play.
I'd firmly recommend it if you've enjoyed any of the STALKER series before - although it might be worth waiting for the inclusion of night-vision goggles. For me the day:night ratio feels a tad night-heavy.

If not, I'd recommend spending a bit of time with STALKER Anomaly - don't try to finish it as it's HUGE! It's free and a very good (and brutal) introduction to STALKER that sets the tone/mood/pace for S2.

At its heart the STALKER series has always seemed to me to be a walking/exploration simulator, with violence and brutal deaths interspersed along the way. It's a game where, where I can, I will often try to find a way to avoid conflict as best is possible.

I started a new game and the zone does feel noticeably more alive and fluid. I've already seen multiple instances of groups attacking groups and/or being attacked by mutants. So this augers well for a-life.

I never encountered any significant bugs, so can't comment as to these improvements, but the change log lists a myriad of fixes. They have improved the iconography for ammo, to clearly indicate type, eg armor piercing.

Other niggles remain. The day:night ratio feels unbalanced and loot stashes are still (generally) worthless - for which I've loaded a mod that helps a bit. I'd rather that there were far fewer stashes, but that they continued on average much better stuff, including the occasional artefact. YMMV

I can't comment to the bullet-sponge mutants as I have this modded, nor to mutant looting as I can't get it to work.

Overall the FPS performance has been fine for me for a while, and seems better again with this release. Similarly pop-in of scenery, NPCs and mutants is gone/much less noticeable.

All in all, a very decent update IMHO. I've given the game enough of a rest that this restart feels fresh, and I'm enjoying simply plodding around and doing the odd main-game mission as and when I fancy.

Cheeki breeki STALKER!

On the perennial subject of 'Do they play their own game?'...

I have decided to mod the FlashBang anomaly into almost oblivion. For, with no apparent warnings or signs, you can all too easily wander into a field of near instant-deaths, with another one cropping up directly in front of you almost every two seconds as you try to run for your life - and in the process die.

If that sounds like fun to you, then great! It's just not for me. So... #Modded.

And yes, I know the 'change directions' solution. It's just that you need the reaction speed of a 17 year old. And I like a scotch or three of an evening.
