Wait what? They added chess, but you can't play the computer? Wth?!

So... they didn't add chess. They added 32 movable objects to a table with a square grid.

Edit: FWIW, a quick search on github shows that they could have used the open source C++ stockfish chess engine, since Lumberyard uses C++. Just chock up some more technical debt they'll have to revisit down the line.

Nice catch there.

By only allowing players to play chess the rules of the game need to be enforced by the player. You know the state of the AI in Star Citizen? They can barely stand upright without t-posing and you think CIG would manage to teach it chess? lolz

Does Chris Roberts strike you as the kind of person who plays chess? Cards maybe. Solitaire, Snap, 52 card pickup, Happy Fami.....oh not that one.

Yes, yes, yes, you say all that but if you move one of the pieces off the board and place it on a coaster a secret door opens! To a secret area! Thats only accessible if you know how to open the secret door or one of the other 4 or 5 access panels that arent secret and are marked on your HUD if you look at them!

CR puts down his joystick, stops playing Wing Commander and remembering the good old days when a publisher would come along and sort it all out and says "Sea plus what now?"

I am rather happy those abominations are being removed as well.

They should just remove stuff every patch

CIG: No more eating requirements!

CIG: Prisons have been taken offline by the malign influence of Pyro!

CIG: Police interdictions are now suspended!

Could get pretty popular 😄

(Don’t touch Pico though. That’d cause a riot...)

One example: no one expected the game to have full size moons and planets that were fully explorable and rendered in real time when Star Citizen was pitched as an MMO. Not only did they do that in a surprise tech demo but within months released the tech in the alpha for all of us to explore. Sure, other games have done this on some level, but not to the level of detail of Star Citizen. The planet tech, often now taken for granted, is now a core component of future gameplay that ranges from base building to emergent opportunities that weren't remotely in the cards in 2012. Will they pull off the tech to make it work on a massive scale? Who knows, but I'm excited to find out. Aren't you?

ACCOMPLISHED

$41,000,000

  • Procedural Generation R&D Team – This stretch goal will allocate funding for Cloud Imperium to develop procedural generation technology for future iterations of Star Citizen. Advanced procedural generation will be necessary for creating entire planets worth of exploration and development content. A special strike team of procedural generation-oriented developers will be assembled to make this technology a reality.

Yes, nobody expected it... despite it being the 41 million stretch goal.

They still haven't found it if all they've seen is SC. Their planets planet (sorry do they have more than one yet 😛 ) don't even orbit.

They do actually have more than 1 planet. 3 landable IIRC and a gas giant. Plus over 10 moons!!!!

One of those planets actually belongs in a different star system though.

PS: Planets are not to scale.
