Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

He also referred to years of delay as the "politics around the development time" 🤣

I'm sure people can (and do) have many hours of fun, even in a starter ship. The problem comes when you actually want to start making money and those more expensive ships start to look tempting. They also do have good cockpit views compared to many. Like those where half the screen is obscured due to cockpit. I already poked fun at the exploration comment.

As for refunds, they are better than Steam. CIG give a 30 day no questions asked refund. Steam give you 2 hours playtime.

Sorry to be a n00b, but I have to ask - what is going on with that presentation? Crowd looks real, presenter looks fake - is it a person dressed as a SC NPC, or some fancy hologram of an NPC? Either way, I start to see where are the $$$ are going :)
It's one of the reasons why the CGI in the original Jurassic Park still beats out a lot of modern day CGI work: dim lighting, distance, and other environmental factors can do a lot to disguise the inherant fakeness of CGI. That is why the crowd looks realistic, while the presenter is firmly in the uncanny valley.

I didn't know he actually "sold" the IP to CIG. That's cheeky.

More relevant, when he put up the SQ42 IP as collatoral for the Coutts loan. There seems to be some debate as to whether CIG ever paid that off. It would be strange if they hadn't, since it was meant to be just a payday loan until the tax credits came in, but some people have said that they still see it as being outstanding.
IIRC, he's also been shuffling various aspects of the IP between his numerous shell corporations, either selling them outright, or "renting" them out. It's all part of Chris Roberts' dream of being a Hollywood big shot, and what can be more Hollywood than draining a project of all possible profits, so you can cheat the people who made it all possible?

Steam gives a full refund on pre-orders until the game launches. Early Access games have the 2hr refund policy, and can be reviewed by owners.

Cue discussion as to whether Star Citizen and/or Squadron 42 are pre-orders or Early Access.

SC is early access, Squadron 42 is pre-order. Steam 2h period is barely doing its job. It's there to refund when you erroneously clicked something you don't want. I've maybe refunded 4 items in my Steam lifetime where I was able to see within 2 hours it wasn't what I was looking for. Usually it takes a tad longer to reveal it might not be what you expected.

As far as I know SC has not been stated or labelled as Early Access yet. Not even by CIG eventhough CR has hinted a couple times to the possibility. In fact one of the main premises of SC solid backing and funding was that it could take all the time it needed to deliver a complete and final game without the need for Early Access. Many a backer is on record stating as much all the while deriding any other Early Access or incomplete released game. It would be very awkward for those if SC was launched by CIG as Early Access.

Also, reviews. I would at least expect Polygon to review Star Citizen if it was in Early Access.

"Early access" has become a catch-all term for games that are not in a "shipping" final state but are nonetheless being sold to consumers, often at final or near-final cost. It is Polygon's position that any title being sold to customers may be evaluated within the context of a review.

I think that is fair. I would imagine Polygon is not the only outlet that would review SC if it was in Early Access. This is possibly one of the reasons CIG is not stating SC as such. At least not yet.

Didnt they claim the opposite during that small claims filesuit ? That what the plaintiff had was the released product ? Hence, no refund ?
Otherwise yeah SQ42 is a pre-order, the PU is indeed early access, despite being far from what other "early access" games offer in terms of completeness.

Heh, it would be indeed fun to see the community and press reaction if SC was formally considered as "released".

In court they effectively argued they had released a product. Its released when they need it to be released, its alpha when they need it to be alpha.

Also CR, when questioned about a 1.0 release said "what release? we are on 3.0 soon" (or words to that effect).

Yeah, you can apply the word as it may suit you. The "released" label they want to avoid tho is the one that can lead to non delivery claims and market reviews.

Reviews at this stage would be horribad for CIG. Something the faithful should keep in mind when they proclaim SC to be already better than any AAA game out there. Those comments might come back to bite them in the rear end!

I'd also mention the famous cloud tech, that would allow flying into gas giants such as Crusader, and maybe scoop fuel (*) which we should have by 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 the next 2 years, it's just around the corner !

(*) by the way where are fuel scoops ? how are big "exploration" ships supposed to refuel in deep space ? oh and where is deep space ? Is that the same thing as a "release" ?

I don't think that any ship has fuel refineries that makes quantum fuel other than the Starfarer. The Carrack used to have one on paper a long time ago, but I didn't see in game. Imagine not even the biggest and best exploration ship can be self sufficient. Well it is not like that matters now, and I don't think that they will get that far that it would matter.
