Starter trade route

Fly too Diso: Buy Diso ma corn

Fly onto 39 Tauri: Sell corn
Buy Tauri chimes

Fly back to Diso: Sell chimes

Rinse> repeat

Remember to get your FSD and cargo bays uprated ASAP or just get enough together and get a Hauler. I made my first million in a hauler really quick to buy a T6.

I personally have done the 71 stop route lots of times in a fully uprated hauler with no problems. Best in the T6 though
Good luck !

I found that when I was starting it was more profitable to check the bulletin board and do "take this cargo to x" missions, or even better "take this illegal cargo to x" missions.

Yeah this ^^^

Try and combine cargo runs where they give you the cargo, courier missions (low pay but take up no cargo) and even some of the cargo ones where you have to go and get it.
Trading your own goods just doesn't return enough profit on a 4t cargo capacity. Rare runs take time (125ly in each direction) so whilst the profit per tun is juicy - you haven't got many tons to work with!

Save up for a Hauler with an A fsd (outstanding range, very much underated) for rare runs,
or get an eagle and shoot stuff in a RES (pick your marks wisely!)

Well went to diso, upgraded to a haulier, fitted extra cargo racks, bought 16 corn, made the long 100 light year journey... Just about to arrive, got interdicted by an imperial courier cmdr. Told me to stop and drop 3 cargo... So I tried to run away and he killed me with one shot...

Ah well, life's tough I suppose

Unlucky :/ Try the Elite-trading tool and set the filter to 25LY...Thats 3-4 jumps for a Hauler so its not too bad

@OP. An extremely powerful tool is Trade Dangerous. It doesn't have a fancy GUI - though another commander has created one for it. Its a command line written in Python - so you need python installed on your machine. TD's has very extensive commands for trade routes, you can send data to the EDDN, it has a route planner etc. There are also (sub) commands for finding a certain commodity (great for those "fetch this" commodity missions) and later on for where "can I buy a certain ship". Examples are in the spoiler.

The buy command allows you to search for an item or ship.
The following command searches for Palladium in the neighborhood of system LHS 3447. I don't want to fly to far so I've limited it to 10 LY around that system.

Code:
$ trade.py  buy Palladium --near "lhs 3447" --ly 10

Ouch! Tough break for you there...

It's not happened to me personally (yet), but reading the forum here it sounds like the rare commodities systems are a bit of a hotbed for pvp action.
On the up side though, it looks like it was a genuine pirate attempt as he did ask for cargo and not just shoot you out of the sky for no reason at all.

Are there any really risky (but profitable) trade routes in solo?

I've got my courier fitted out for trade, and it's not too bad in combat; is there a way to usefully combine the two?

Thanks for the info. I'll tell a friend of mine. He's just a new player.

The trade routes in Open and solo are exactly the same, its exactly the same galaxy but in one you see other (real) players in your instance. The improvements that have been made to the Ai by Sarah recently (and are still on going) mean that Solo is getting less and less "safe" These days

To answer the OP, don't trade in the sidewinder - do missions as you will make more money and you wont need the outlay - also make sure you move away from the starter systems, find a high tech worls roughly 100LY from the start and head in that general direction taking missions as you go. When you get to the High tech look around and see if the area has what you need and buy a hauler or adder and start trading then.

I clear saved on 1.3 and did this and was in a Cobra in about 6 hrs of playing

I haven't traded in a little while so don't know of any specific routes but I imagine if you can find a trade route which includes an anarchy system then you should get more npc pirates trying to interdict you.

If you don't mind using trading tools... Thrudds Elite Dangerous Tools lets you search for anarchy system near your current location and you can also check if they've got anything good to trade.
