Newcomer / Intro Steps on a new laptop

In the early 80's I played and loved Elite on the Commodore 64
come the early 90's and I played Frontier on the Amiga

then a long long spell without!

After seeing this on Youtube I am now 6 months new to Elite Dangerous on my aging Laptop and I love the game...
but...
It is aging and I am gonna buy a new laptop next month
What I want to know is - do I just download and install steam and go from there or I need something else?
I am not au fait with a lot of terminology being an (Ancient pensioner) somewhat older guy so easy steps please shoud there be any

If you launch the game through Steam - yes, you'll need to download & install Steam, then find Elite in your Steam library, install it and you'll be good to go.

Just be ready that your custom keybinds won't transfer automatically. If you're using non-default keybinds - here is something that would help in transferring those, but it is much more technical than just Steam install, in any case you can always change them manually (if you put two laptops next to each other - it'll be easier and faster to keep track of what's what).

That's it, unless:

If you use Elite standalone launcher (NOT Steam):
  • you will need to install standalone launcher again (check your purchases in your Elite store account for links)
  • or you'll need to connect your Elite account to Steam and then you can use Steam version to continue (how to).

You should copy journal files, visited star cash and your bindings files over from your old laptop to your new one as they are all stored at our end not on the servers.

When I did this a couple of years ago I had both machines running on my router and just copied all Frontier Developments or Elite Dangerous folders from the old to the new machine, the only difficulty was windows trying to store things on the cloud. Then I downloaded the launcher as described above, but all that was with the non steam version.
