stupid ? maybe

My understanding (from conversations with support), is that ED uses servers distributed around the world, not just in Ireland or Europe, so I would assume that I am connecting to servers in the US (where I live). If I'm not, and I will have a look at the IP addresses I connect to, then that is poor matchmaking on the part of ED / Amazon. That said, unless I'm connecting to a server in India, all my ping times are <200Ms, which I believe is quite good enough to play the game.

As I said in my post above, I don't connect with other players, I'm a solitary sort of spaceman... :)

Well, it's dangerous to make assumptions... Seems like I connect to servers in Ireland, so if FD do indeed use localized Amazon servers, then something isn't working right.

Connecting to a server in my part of the world would give me a ping of 35 ms, connecting to the ones in Ireland >300 ms. :(

If you're trying to ping the Amazon servers, you can't. Try this: http://www.cloudping.info/ It will tell you your latency to the different cloud servers.

Regarding your issue, whenever I drop into a USS, I always have to wait 10 to 15 seconds for the content to spawn. I would say about 90% of the time when I am interdicted by an NPC, I have to wait 10 to 15 seconds for it to turn up, the other 10% of the time it will arrive almost instantly. There's some very strange networking going on... :)

Does the game actually use international amazon servers?

i don't think its your net, i suspect it is your hard drive. guessing you are not using an SSD? when was the last time you did a defrag?

if directed at me. i do use ssd. if it was my ssd then it would happen on other games played over internet, programs etc. no issues there. i have been in touch with fdevs and it seems to be fixed. spawn time coinsided with mine yesterday. though i only did a few tests to get some netlogs for devs... twice it was delayed. passed detais on now i will wait for reply..

yes i was playing with a aussie yesterday to test things

it would defiantly not happen all over, it all depends on the programs memory allocation and their usage of system pagefile and other caches. and Elite is such a program that heavily use cache files, which means more noticeable symptoms if you have a slow drive. and those symptoms are most commonly exactly like the ones you described.

but you say you have an SSD so i think we can rule this out. even a slow SSD is usually fast enough to never get any loading issues in modern games.
If they do then something is seriously wrong, like for example a faulty bios configuration or a bad SATA connection.

P2P ftw, probably. Have noticed myself that zoning into a USS with a wing makes stuff appear quite a while after you have arrived. Even funnier when we went to Chelomey Orbital, and the drydock with the Majestics only loaded on one of the two clients. I had to completely restart the game then low wake out and in again to be synched with my wing and being able to see all assets. UDPPPP *does the Khaaan shout*

if you are the first one in into a USS then all of it is loaded locally, no P2P is going on so tweak your own system if you want faster loading. its only when the second player jumps in that a P2P connection is established, and he will mainly be affected by your system as you are the Host.

Still doesn't account for objects not being there at all. It wasn't invisible, the drydock was completely absent. I could fly through its supposed location, while seeing the other player, the starbase and all npc ships.

i dont use paging file. no need with ssd and 32g ram:)

many people think that way, and usually they are right (edit: if this was still 2008) but now we are talking gaming. and many games just don´t run well at all without a pagefile. and since you are describing loading problems i would defiantly enable it and see what happens.

having paging file on a ssd would be as bad as defraging it. it will die.

this is a myth, it will eventually die yes, but not for many years. a modern SSD can handle rewrites of 50-100gb/per day and still last a decade.
and if you are that worried about the health of your SSD then you should not run games on it at all and just stick to desktop tasks.
modern games puts a ton of strain on your HD and i if you monitor your read/write activity before and after you enabled pagefiling i doubt that you would see much of a difference in comparison,
