Newcomer / Intro Surface mining without geological signal??

So, I have been collecting engineering materials from the geological signal scanned from DSS.

When surfing around to collect various material, i came across some landable planets with elemental materials listed in EDDB, but no geological signals from DSS.

I'm wondering if i can still find materials on these planets, just with significantly increased difficulty as I have to surf around the whole planet instead sticking to geo. signals only?

Anything in the material list for a planet can potentially be found on that planet regardless of geo sites or not, in fact the percentage of high grade materials per node is often higher than for geo sites, I have found meteorites usually all drop high level mats, outcrops tend to be low level, so aim for meteorites if you can.

Its how we did it in ye-olden-days, and we didnt all die of boredom, in fact it was quite fun.
We didnt even have the composition information, we had to manually record and share our finds on 3rd part sites then do analysis on it.

Hmm, gonna try some when I back from work. So, no in-game tool/module to help on this, Just surf on the planet and try your luck?

Actually, that is what your Wavescanner was provided for.

Use the guide linked by @metatheurgist to understand the signals (visual and auditory):

I like to indulge in this surface prospecting in the SRV from time to time, I can find it Zen-like if I am in the mood (same with mining). I find it more satisfying than hunting geo and bio features.
