Surviving Community Goals in Open

Heres the thoughts of a long time cargo/blockade runner who lives and dies in open

I've been to CGs where the dreaded 'gankers' are flying about....... I've taken them on and won (occasionally lost but hey ho), and by won I mena I made it to the station and delivered the cargo.

On one occasion I was down to 23% hull , no canopy and 1/2 the vital modules had taken a pounding, but I still won since I delivered.

Yeah the repair bill was huge, and ok you run the risk of losing rebuy and cargo, but if your idea of Elite dangerous is delivering 600 tons of whatever in a T9 with no real challenge, then open is'nt for you

But the buzz you get when you outwit damned good human players belonging to SDC and beat their petty blockade is worth every cr of the risk of rebuy.
Also it teaches you howto really build/loadout/fly a python so its suitable for the above CG

"Wheeeeeeeeee..... 375m/sec :D....... into the slot [woah]

That video is epic. Jump to the rebuy screen lol. I usually don't armour my haulers, but i will do big shields. I have an anaconda now that can fight back so I'm good.

citation needed?

my guess is you misinterpreted advice on submitting to interdiction, which indeed lowers cooldown for the submitter, but is unrelated to ship class ...

Thanks znôrt! I've corrected point 2 for the sake of posterity.

All is good advise from what I've read so far. Whether Solo, OP or PvE, it will be interesting to see when the Thargoids turn up.

What are these "defensive weapons" of which you speak?

Big problem with ED is that you've got to deploy hardpoints to field any weapons (aside from the good ol' PD) and that means you can't spool up your FSD.

I built my whole Cutter around the idea of "defensive weapons" to start with.
After flying it for a couple of hours, I realised it was a completely pointless exercise and reconfigured it with weapons intended solely to dispose of annoying NPC ships.

When you deploy weapons it means you're fighting instead of running.
Even if you put a big dent in your opponent, you're still going to take damage that you wouldn't take if you'd started running immediately.

If you think you can fit weapons which will destroy an aggressor, go for it.
Those weapons cease to be "defensive" though.

I wish FDev would give us some defensive weapons (turrets perhaps?) which could remain deployed while an FSD is charging though.

He already mentioned which weapons - Ion disruptor (Mines) Reverb Cascade (Mines/Torpedo's) These weapons can be used with ease during the cooldown when in the right hands. You'll find a familiar pattern on those rare occasions you do get hunted in open, most Cmdrs will try to prey on what they think is a weak target.

It all becomes predictable, not as painfully predictable as dealing with NPC's. From experience most Cmdrs expect me to run away in a straight line spamming that FSD button in my lumbering Type-9 with all PIPS in ENG, I turn to face them FA-OFF and boost past firing off some cascade torpedo's. Always a satisfying experience.

On a few occasions I've forced guy's to high wake, the majority of the time it is just throwing a few punches as a F U before I low/high wake. If it's a genuine pirate, I am more than happy to role play and offer some cargo. If it's a wing of gankers I am flying wide arcs or performing emergency drops.

Compare all that to dealing with NPC's during a CG, yawn whilst I easily pop them one by with MC's or Missiles. For a regular trade/mission run I have no interest in PvP, would rather space truck in peace listening to music, still want the off chance of being caught out, so it's a mix of Open & Mobius.

Funnily enough, Ive been in open only lately after a solid year in solo...some guy saw me at a station and tried ramming the other night thinking I was on a dc. I wasnt and he missed...boys will be boys

Im mixing it up with little spells in open, if only to laugh at the stupidity of others instead of laughing at me own fer a change...and so far its been underwhelming. Ive seen busier graveyards at 3 in the mornin although in retrospect, I used common sense trying to fly a t9 into a casino during the weekend in open...that would have been like sticking the oven on and climbing into it leaving a note that dinner literally was me. I did that in solo ^

I have got to top 10% levels(not sure I have held it in the current one) on both the latest haulage CGs , using a T9 (only FSD engineered, no fighter bay). Either Xbox is relatively free of "that type", or NZ time sunday is bedtime for them.......pretty sure only interdictions were NPC and only time I blew up was a combo of DC and instance glitching.
Even tried the bounty hunt one last weekend with CobraIV......players were all well behaved.
so much for the fatuous arguments about XBOXers being pewpew focused lowbrows.

Main point I making is T9 is awesome!

Yep, Type-9 is the bee's knees! By the way, yesterday I got blown up by a wing of Elite players in FDL's and an Imperial Clipper at Abroin.

I never stood a chance, and barely had time to launch reverb mines, boost, and select another system. My FSD hadn't even cooled down, which goes to show that even with the best preparation, sometimes the odds can still be stacked against you.

My mistake was in getting interdicted in the first place. I shouldn't have been afraid to do an emergency drop out of supercruise, rather than wait in agony for the speed to drop down enough. I'll update my original post and add that point.

I didn't let it get to me, though it stung a bit. Ended up jumping into my little titanium hair-dryer of a Sidewinder and started an interdiction war of attrition with the players. I faced-off the player who killed me, and landed several well placed cannon shots on their shields as a point of principle before they blew me up. They appeared to have left the system after that.

As for professional pirates, yep. I've met honourable ones who let me go after I gave them the cargo they asked for. Doesn't mean I wouldn't have sent them to the rebuy screen in an instant if I could, but I know when I'm bested :D

Yup, definitely keep eyes on the scanner and be prepared to emergency drop, it is the best defence against wings. Flying a wide arc to stations gives you enough breathing room to run a scan of ships in the system and track anyone who isn't on the shipping lane.

Repping ye wasnt enough because I very much agree. Im a multi platform player, pc and xbox and very much agree...the salt is way worse on pc with most the xbox players Im meeting being enough to start convincing me open is actually ok. Playing on pc seen me ganked so many times, I spent a year in solo...the salt is on another level tbh.

If they ever crossplay with pc gamers, Ill probably go back to solo...really ^

I play on Xbox and recently I've done CGs in Open. I expected to get blown out of the stars in my Engineered T6 but nope, so far so good in Xbox land. The only thing fired at me is a load of wing requests, o7s, and some thermal vent lasers while in my Condy (long story).
