System Map is now LETHALLY SLOW.

You are talking about the orrery view.

A highly requested feature for a long time... we can hope and dream that one day FD will implement this.

I think he's talking about the Oculus view. Which is 3D rendered. Not sure if this means that the standard view is also 3D rendered? But I assume it is, otherwise there would be 2 sets of system map code.

Just want to reiterate that for me, System Map load time is directly related to frame rate.

I've found it much more bearable since I:

1. turned off Vertical Sync and Frame Rate Limit, and
2. pointed my view away from landable planets before loading the map.

I agree that it should be fixed, and sped up.
I don't care what the planets look like in the System Map, I just need the information.

Dumb question maybe, but why are you guys overheating near stars. I've covered 8 kylies over the last week following my usual "jump in, honk, start refuelling, scan the star & look at the sysmap" routine. The map does take longer to open now, usually 5-10 seconds for me, but I can happily sit in front of the star reading the system contents for ages with no problem.

What gives?

I am running a combat spec because I am in a security role for Distant Worlds. Which means that I can't linger in coronas indefinitely. I do have almost everything powered off, but having the best thrusters and shields available means that I over heat just fast enough that a LONG screen loading time can cause issues while in a corona. I only switch off my shields if I am fast traveling, but otherwise I leave them powered up to land on planets.

The funny thing is that loading time is longer for 1.5 players too, eventhough the planet rendering is still the same as in 1.4...

I suspect it's at least in part because more people are exploring in 2.0 and they have same discount hamster powered exploration servers churning out system data. So now everyone is getting a dose of the normative exploration "love fest" experience.

...

Ah, I see - I so seldom outfit for anything other than heat management and range I tend to forget those issues. Even when refuelling at 600+ nose-on my heat rarely rises past the low 60s. I can appreciate how a simple doubling of the map opening time could become catastrophic!

The system map has always been slow for me, but since 1.5 it has been noticeably worse.
I think it used to take ~10-20 secs, now it's always at least 30 secs.
And here's the bit I really don't get: It's just as slow the 2nd or 3rd time, even in the same system.
I would expect any delay to be caused by having to download the necessary data (which could be done during hyperspace IMHO), but after opening the system map for system XYZ-123, I should be able to open it again without the same tedious delay every single time.

I LOVE this game, but this is rather annoying.

Slow system map is one of my biggest frustrations in the game.

You can stop it half-way through loading tho (in case of overheating) by hitting escape (or whatever else you have bound to 'get me back to the exit menu') and then resuming. It's suboptimal tho.

Unfortunately, it is a factor for explorers - that first glance of what the planets look like in the System Map goes a long way towards deciding whether it's worthy of further exploration, especially if there's something that looks potentially Earth-like in there.

That's because there is no caching system for the data - you access the server and re-download it each time you open your map.

For *some* explorers maybe. But this has been discussed to death on the exploration forums. Many explorers feel that the the full color map is a form of cheating and renders the DSS worthless. Even suggesting that all spheres on the system map be "grey" until they are surface scanned.

Horizons has tipped the scales of importance back in the DSS's favor, and innacuries in the system map color representation are a bit more realistic for an initial sweep that only takes a few seconds. So the cries to nerf the ADS have stopped for now.

personally, I would prefer to see the text data for a scanned planet in the cockpit. And ignore the system map altogether.

yes thats true, but .. that's information too (?)

I'd just like to add my voice to the 5-10 second brigade here as well as in the poll thread. As has been said if you're system map is taking a long time to open and you don't want to overheat... then try not opening it when close to a star, or flying fast directly at a planet ;)

It's also worth pointing out again, as a lot of people don't seem to realise, if you want to cancel then just press Escape twice (open and close main menu) and it gets you back to the game screen in less than a second.

loads for TOO DAMN long again, it's just poor excuse for bad code.
If you can deliver a piece of "good code" that solves this issue, feel free to contact Frontier. I'm sure they'll pay you off in paint jobs and bobbleheads.

Or it could be that the professional coders are having to represent a galaxy of 400 billion stars in proper relation to each other on-the-fly which takes a bit of processing grunt. The denser the stars are around you, the longer it takes to represent them on a map. Yeah, let's go with that.

I am wondering what "too damned long" is for a period of time? Five seconds? Ten?

I usually try this by hitting a mapped hotkey for the back button. But when the load is far enough along it will ignore my request. Maybe the ESC key has special processor priority? Will test this out when I get home.

I forget how many times I have whined about this. At one time (1.2 or 1.3) I could check the nav map AND the system map while my fsd was charging, and 9/10 times be back before it was completed.
Then it got slow. If I set my graphics to LOW, I can get it in less than 30 secs. If not, it will often take minutes.

Ticketed it, and was told it was temporary network issues due to the exploration servers. Horse hooey.

Please do ticket it, seems the best way to be heard is flood support desk with pointless duplicates when then should be doing useful stuff.

What's supposed to download when you open the system map? Exploration tag? owned ships in system? 10+ seconds for that?

All the information should be on the client, Im begining to understand why they don't do the oorey map.
