Hardware & Technical T.16000 or X52

Just what it says in the title. Which one and why?

And if anyone says I should by the $400 Warthog, consider this your one warning that I will flag you for it.

Some X52's are so poorly made that they fail in no time. Logitech will replace them. I'm not sure if Logitech's recent take over of MadCatz has produced a better product? Mine is pre-Logitech era. It's a great stick when used with Joystick curves. It's not that accurate for me without Joystick curves, your experience may differ. It has everything you need for Elite.

Virpil T-50, or VKB Gunfighter with MCG, and a CH Pro throttle (or Virpil T50 throttle once released...)

:D

Be very wary of the TM drivers for the T.16000. I've had a hell of a time making it recognize the joystick twist correctly. Make sure you download the driver that has a calibration utility.

The other issue is that you'll have to re-grease the throttle, assuming you get the full HOTAS.

What are you upgrading from? That'll inform our recommendations.

Are you talking about Thrustmaster's TARGET software? Because yeah that can be problematic to set up and I don't really recommend it. What it does is map the stick's axes to axes on a virtual device.

Thrustmaster's actual drivers though are a different thing and haven't caused me any trouble:

Actually, those were the drivers giving me trouble!

There's another version that allows you to calibrate the joystick. I think this is the page.

I've posted about my issues a couple of times. Here's a video of the yaw going crazy.

KB+M, that is what I currently have

I cannot agree more. Dump that crap, don't give them money until Logitech releases a brand new design with Logitech build quality and not just then name tag.
They don't even need to redesign. The design is great for the X52. They just need to use higher grade components.

I like the T.16k. IN particular I like the ED has a built in profile for it. The only thing I had to change were some of the SRV settings.

However, mine just went bad. I ordered a new on and it is on the way (amazon has them for $35 right now). It keeps trying to pitch left. I checked with the software it comes with the the button is sending noise.

After I get the replacement I will take this one apart and try to see what broke.

After about 7 months mine is also pitching left. Other then that I love it and would recommend it.

If you are lefthanded get the T.16000. You can set it up for lefthanded flight control. The only one that supports it to change the config to lefthand.
Downside is you can't get a HOTAS for righthand use. So if you want a throttle as well, you will have to flight righthanded.

I wish I would have some more options.

Miklos

Wait, do you guys have your pitch bound to the joystick twist? The RZ axis?

If so, I fixed the problem by calibrating the joystick several times.

I don't think I do. My yaw is twist. I will roll slightly to the left. If I tap on the stick it centers itself back out which tells me it's a mechanical issue somewhere at the stem of the joystick.

In my personal experience....

The Warthog stick is nice, the button layout is excellent for ED. The base (gimbal, specifically) is the weak link, not being a particularly great design (same as the T16000M, in fact), and also being plastic mated to metal (potential point of failure). TM also seem to have dropped the ball a touch, using a lesser quality lubricant than they used to, meaning the older Warthogs have a nice, smooth motion, the newer ones having a fair bit of "stiction", need an open, clean and re-lube to make nice and smooth.

As for the throttle, it's not great for ED. Lots of "flick" switches that hold in place, which not a lot of bindings on ED have an option for, and no real analog style stick like you see in the TWCS or CH Pro throttles. It has a fantastic feel, but poor button layout (for ED).

the T16000M is actually a great stick, with a totally botched button layout for a HOTAS. It has 12 wasted buttons on the base. At least 4 of those should have been turned into another hat on top of the stick, but instead, TM decided to change the LED colours to orange from green. Shame, for the money, it's a super accurate stick, but lacking in bindings where you need them.

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but my ideal set up, today, with stuff you can buy right now, is a CH Pro throttle (TWCS throttle probably as good, but I have not tried one yet), with a Virpil Mongoos T50 base, and a Warthog grip, throw in a set VKB T-rudder MK III or IV pedals, and you're set.

On a side note, Virpil are set to release a "budget" grip aimed at space sims, and a "budget" base. I'd say it may be worth waiting for.

As for the X-52... It's actually an amazing looking stick, totally botched by Madcatz and poor QC, Logitech seem not to have done much to resolve it. I'd stay away...
