Cool.
And I of you Henkka!
Following the recent obfuscation of the exploration side of the game, I'm off.
Not from, but of.I truly hope no one expects anything from me.. [where is it]
@ Orvidius: Sorry, but I think you have it wrong. The main point is obfuscation. The biggest problem isn't clumsy new controls or such, but the developers hiding information we used to have.
This isn't a surprise, but it still makes me sad. Jackie's gone, MattG's gone, Allitnil's gone: there go in my opinion the best explorers.
Well it's no surprise that those who were most engaged in the current exploration game would be the most affected by it.
I would not take it personally, at this stage I honestly think it's difficult to say whether it's better or worse.
It's clearly different.
The focus of exploration is different.
The reported discoveries thing is awesome, the dividing of the galaxy into areas is great.
It's difficult to say where it will go at this time, but I think there's a great deal of promise there, with real exploration goals being brought into the game, and CMDRs on mass heading to areas to seek things out, or strange discoveries popping up in your feed.
I would not write it off yet. But yeah as I say it's totally understandable (and expected) that those most engaged in the current exploration game might feel most negatively affected by large changes.
Most prolific system taggers, yes. but explorers hmmm? to be honest until this update what we considered to be exploration in the past was a bit of an illusion since there really wasn't anything to it that deserved the name 'exploration'--- just jump to a system that you never even had to discover in the first place, press honk, and point your ship at something, and you're done. THAT was "exploration" in a nutshell. Now that the game is no longer simple mode and has discovery gameplay, is more involved and interactive, and has a bit of skill involved, i'm not surprised to see people who liked the simplistic tag-all approach leave. the best explorers this game will ever see will be born out of this update.

Inversely to all this, I have been absent from the game for about 5 months. All updates up until now have primarily been Combat/Bubble focused. In the last 2 yrs I have spent more time out in the black, 90% of my time i would say. This update was the one i was waiting for.
I've hunted ELW's, I was first with a proven crossing of the Abyss (on the map of EliteDiscovery at least) South to North to the west of Beagle (coincidently as I did that Chiggy was going West to East) and spent many a wasted hour trying to find Geological sites. And that was what broke my back. Hunting the correct kind of little purple dot on a surface to avoid it being a rock and not some fumeroles etc. ED needed a better mechanic for this. The new mapping aspect addresses that issue at least, although it may be now too simplistic. But i'll take that at the moment.
Of all the people in the ED community, 10% (a guess, may be less) would be those outside of the bubble 'exploring'. The rest of the community turned off once gaining Elite by the 'jump, honk, jump' scenario.
So they gave the community as a whole something different.
I have spent time binding keys/joystick/mouse to find the best config for me.
It has given me reason to come back.
Once it goes live, then i'll be out in the black again. I will experiment, use my judgement by just looking at the scanner readings if it is ELW then actually check if it is. Then its no longer hit system map, but tune the scanner. Same game, different mechanic.
It's sad to see many familiar faces leaving because of this. I feel early Beta is a slightly premature verdict.
What I do believe though, is that there needs to be something other than Guardians/Thargoids features on surfaces/in systems away from the bubble in the further reaches of the galaxy to entice more people out.
Added content is what Exploration now needs.

Ah, another DD-level argument. To clarify what I meant: they were the best explorers because they did a lot for our understanding of the game's galaxy. That's far more like actual discovery than just tagging bodies and unlocking entries in a codex. Well, good riddance then, Jackie. I expected more from you.
