Glad to read you enjoy this new way of "Exploration". Discover without flying.

Jump into a system.
HONK.
Discover every single speck of dust in the system without moving an inch.

This is a description of discovery as it currently stands in the game, and you are complaining about the new system because "Discover without flying." ?

I never said I was entirely happy with the new system ... just embracing the new changes.

And after my current exploration expedition (checking an entire sub-sector for ELW/WW/AW planets) I will probably do *more* flying as the POI location system is now sooooo much better !!

Anyway, I'll not comment any more on this as it's been done to death here (and elsewhere) many many times.

I'm going to miss the chance to leave a note to say "Hello" to everyone that comes after me. It seems such a shame to leave a that small piece of humanity one I've gone by.
Use probe(s) on a select body or two - the new "1st mapped by" tag isn't a must for everything, right?

I think I've done a hundred or two systems since the beta launched (including in VR - which has been 'interesting') and still think the new system is brilliant - in comparison to the old - but I don't go looking for anything 'special' and have enjoyed finally finding those elusive POI's virtue of the new way.
The only down side to the beta is that going back to 3.2 Live will lose all of these 'new toys' for an unknown period of time!

I think I'll boost my 'savings' and do the first Ram Tah missions a couple of times while I wait for 3.3 Live - then point out to places unknown in my new Krait Phantom...

Some of you will have seen me conspicuously present in-game this last week or so. I've been taking things on board and I've managed to get some motivation back.

Thanks to everyone who has commented here, you've made me think for long enough to get over my initial knee-jerk reaction.

I think I've gone the other way. My initial reaction (after I'd sorted the bindings) was 'it's ok', but now I'm kind of at the 'meh' stage. I don't dislike it, I just can't be bothered.

I hope people don't forget about the drinking game while reading this thread, cheers!

I hadn't forgotten it initially......

So nothing changes ? A new huge patch for... the same thing? Black or white, no shades ? Old vs new ? No imagination at all...

A point of clarification...Alitnil is saying that just honking and entering the FSS awards the first discovery tag on every body in the system. Can someone verify that? Because as I understand it, the tag is only given for the individual bodies you resolve in the FSS.

On every STAR (including black holes), not every body. And you don't even Need to enter FSS for that.

This isn't a surprise, but it still makes me sad. Jackie's gone, MattG's gone, Allitnil's gone: there go in my opinion the best explorers.
Have fun with whatever you'll do, and if Frontier will someday improve exploration for everyone, I hope to see you again!

Is there a summary of what made them leave? For hardworking explorers like them, that must mean they found another hobby.
Is it the exploration mechanics shown in the beta?
Whenever I come across an Allitnil tag, I think "And he's somewhere out there, tagging more". Same for the other two actually.

I’m glad to read that Jackie is re-considering. Her initial post was saddening.

I felt like Jackie too when I first started playing with the new FSS mechanics in the beta, I didn’t really care much for it, and I feared that a lot of old school explorers would truly hate it. However, I’ve now used it to scan hundreds of systems and my opinions have changed drastically. I now strongly prefer the FSS to the old God Honk. There is a learning curve, and you truly need to take the time to set up the keybinds in a comfortable manner, but once you get proficient with it then the new system is very nice. The new tools allow us to find things we’d never have been able to find before.

Yes it is slower if you just want to uncover the system map, but it’s much faster at full scanning a system, so in some ways it’s quicker but in other ways its slower. And Jackie is right it does obfuscate information after the honk, too much in my opinion, and I’ve made many suggestions in the beta forums to improve that situation. Hopefully Frontier implements a few of them.

I would humbly suggest that any explorers who think they will hate the new system to please give it an honest chance when it goes live. Make the effort to set it up and spend some real time using it before you write it off completely. I’m very glad I did, and now I’m more excited for exploration in Elite than I’ve been in over four years.

Thanks Cmdr, will await the update drop and will assess impact of change on enjoyment of game then make a decision.

Positive feedback from well-travelled players does help but, as with all things E:D, its going to be down to how things fit with an individual's playing style (etc.). The bottom line is that if it don't work for me, it doesn't matter if it works for others as I'm the one playing my game [this doesn't make me 'right', others 'wrong' or mean that the new system is 'broken'; each to their own].

Well, if you enjoy this new way of "Exploration" at a standstill... FSS the 1MLs wide system in a minute and discover and tag almost all what it contains. Enjoy !
The thing, for me, is that this FSS-thing minigame is just an ugly concept art and mechanic for a 2018 major space game. Moving a slider in a dull UI and zooming in, and instantantly getting all the data of a body, no matter what far it is ? And tagging it as "discovered" ? Without even moving ? Come on... Space game or "telescope simulator" ?
I just can't have the feeling of being "Exploring". Just playing a silly blueish minigame. Even after having tried it for many hours and dozens of systems.
Exploration is dead for me in ED if FDevs keep this heresy as it is.

And better not to say anything about the PewpewThePlanet with infinite "probes" minigame-thing.... "Probes.".. [haha]

If you know the exact place it is, you have discovered it. I never understood the old version when it said you hadn't discovered it, but you actually had. What you hadn't done was do a surface scan and for some reason doing a surface scan meant you had discovered it. It never made sense anyway. Now the new surface scan gives you another tag (mapped by). I think that is perfectly fine and makes sense.

Personally I am not that bothered about tagging and getting first discovered or mapped by. I want to find interesting places to explore and the new system is great at that.

You quote my post (directed to Mengy) and write about the current ADS.
I didn't.
New FSS being better than old ADS doesn't make it good for a major patch.

You talked about tagging which has correlations with the old ADS. So I have talked about both systems.

So what if you replied to Mengy. If you don't want anyone else to talk to you send a PM to him. This is a discussion forum.

What do mean by better?
