Tempted to upgrade from PS4 to PS4 Pro?

Just did it today - I couldn't resist! While I was out, I text my wife that I was going to get the car washed - and buy a new games console... Well, it saved a trip, right? :p

I just upgraded to the Pro today!

I traded in my 2 year old ps4 and dozens of ps4 games I've either completed (or had no intention of completing), my 2 old ps3's which were sitting gathering dust in the cupboard (plus all the PS3 games) and finally a very old Xbox 360 Elite (with around 20 games).

Not only did I have enough for a brand new PS4 Pro but i also had over £200 left over which has gone onto a gift card. Even the wife is happy!!!!

I wasn't planning on it, I told myself months ago that I'd get a pro or ps5 whenever my current ps4 dies.. but after watching the ED stream last night, I totally caved in. Went in town today and traded in my PS slim and 3 games, upgrade cost was £105 ..ouch.. but I think it'll be worth it with a better frame rate!

Oh God I've caved! :( it was your bloody picture of the box that did it lol

Plus my wife ordered it me for my birthday ;)

I've been tempted for a while but the whole rigmarole of transferring my games from one to the other gives me pause. I do not want to lose anything

Dude, seriously... it's a frakkin' network cable, and it's done. That's all you need. A single network cable. Such a simple process, too. Painless and quick (my transfer took about 1 hour).

Cheers, I'll bug them for 60 fps in 1080 enhanced mode (whatever its called) first then 4k ;)

Change of plan on Tuesday for me! Gonna take my day off and setup the pro while they're updating the servers :D

Now this is logical :)

Based on Elite Dangerous alone, personally i would have to say no.

This may sound "nitpicky" for some, but my only complaints with Elite Dangerous are related to image quality/post-processing effects (or the lack thereof), which was something i hoped it would be dealt with on PS4 Pro, due to the boost in horsepower. Unfortunately, to my surprised, in yesterday's stream i witnessed lots of screen-tearing (Even Ed and Lloyd seemed surprised by it, lol) and the lack of a propper anti-aliasing solution. The boost on frame rate and the improvements in texture and lightning quality don't mean much to me, if all i see on screen are lots of tearing and jaggies everywhere.

As such, it doesn't make much sense to me, personally, to spend a lot of money on a PS4 Pro, cause the problems i've complained about are still there.
My standard model will do just fine.

I did notice but it's not just about elite tbh (hangs head) a few of my other favourite games do take good advantage of 1080p ps4 pro :)

I've also said more than once what we play at launch will be different than a few months or a year down the line, xbox gpp compared to xbox ed today is night and day.

Unless the ps architecture just doesn't suit the cobra engine I'm sure they'll sort it :) they've been optimising xbox for over two years!

How do you know the screen tearing is not on the OG too?

Seriously though, they did mention it on the stream. Ed "That might be the capture card" and Lloyd "Yeh I haven't seen it like that before". But then Ed did say "it could be something buggy"...

They probably haven't used the capture card on that PS4 Pro Developer rig before. Now I am not being FanBoi extraordinary. I am still however a little nervous about screen tear but I think if its going to plague the Pro, its probably going to be present on the OG. I hope its not on either console. If its there at that severity next week I am going to be shouting from the roof tops here (Sort it LLoyd!). ;)

I want the pro bad after watching the demo but I too will wait for the price to come down. I know it will in November and can wait. The vanilla PS4 will be fine until then.

Yup, after what i've seen Guerrilla Games doing with Horizon Zero Dawn on a standard PS4, watching yesterday's stream on a PS4 Pro left a sour taste in my mouth. I was expecting a much cleaner image, and not exactly what i saw, with tearing, jaggies and even shimmering/flicking. It's a fact that they showed us upgraded textures and lightning, but what does it matter if the image quality isn't quite right up there with the rest?
Usually, what devs do on PS4 Pro, is revamping resolution of their games or keep the base 1080p and boost the image quality, with better texture filtering, v-sync and anti-aliasing solutions. With Elite that doesn't seem to be the case.

The architecture in Xbox and PS4 is basically the same, Mr Fad, it's x86. Besides, they even share the same processing (slightly overclocked on xbox) and graphical power units. If the Xbox version is night and day when compared from launch to present day, then i have no doubt FDev will most likely optimise the PS4 version as time goes by. Let's hope they do, my friend! It was a 720p compressed youtube stream, its not going to look amazing no matter what they do. When they showed the close up shots, it looked right, its going to look great at 1080p uncompressed.

If the Base ps4 looks and play the same as xbox you won't be disappointed! :)

No, it will more than likely be present!
What i can conclude is that, if those image quality issues are present on a PS4 Pro, they'll surely be more than present in a standard model. That's a given and why i said that, for me personally, makes no sense upgrade to a PS4 Pro. No matter what model i have, those issues will still be there. Let's hope they solve it or tone it down a bit with a future update! ;)

Yeah, i noticed that too, lol.
As soon as Ed jumped into the ship's cockpit and started to look around, i couldn't believe my eyes! I was like: No, god please no... [haha]
They both seemed surprised, with Lloyd even saying that he had seen it before, but not like that (which means they don't have a v-sync solution and that tearing can and will happen in more taxing areas). They ended up justifying it as a stream/capture card and i can believe that, but only to a certain extend... I know this issues will be present at launch. How much, that i don't know. I just hope they iron those issues out with a patch in the future. :p

Please don't judge an entire console based on a single stream. The Pro is an awesome console, hell even the home/dash screen loads up quicker and is smoother than my regular PS4.

I bought mine the day it came out and don't regret it at all, took about 10mins to set up console to console HDD transfer then about 5 hrs for full 1TB transfer.
Sounds like a long time but I left it going over night.

Must admit I'm dissapointed there is no 4k (or upscaled) or HDR support. I switched to a 4k TV in the middle or playing HZD and the difference is truly breathtaking. I'd love to see ED in HDR.

This is also in the Post Stream FAQ, so maybe all is not lost?

Will there be an option to activate or deactivate Vertical Sync in order to either increase FPS or minimise screen tearing?

Not at launch, no.

Yeh that was my biggest disappointment too, I upgraded the 4K HDR TV just as I was finishing HZD and the difference between that and 1080p is astonishing. I had hoped for that in ED.

They will. I think you'll be positively surprised by the final product.
BTW, as I said before, gameplay is much more important than pure graphic quality.

I Deffo noticed and was horrified during the live stream  I've rewatched in 720 60 and while is apparent at the start it does chill and look smooth eventually so the stream didn't help!

Trust me if it tears like that at home I'll be the first to shout/scream on the forums!
