Terminal Cancer Diagnosis

Hey Paul - so sorry to hear of your situation. Commanders like yourselves who've been here from the very start have our biggest admiration and respect here at Frontier. I'm sure the amazing community will be all too keen to help you out - but you're welcome to add my personal account too, I'm CMDR Zacerhy.
Zac, would there be any station naming opportunities for Paul? I think the community would cheerfully contribute funds via Kickstarter or Gofundme if fees are an issue.

Dear Paul,

first of all some personal notes: although we don't know each other, it saddens me to read your story and your diagnosis. I'll spare you all the words you might have heard already about the bitterness of a cancer diagnosis, but I want to wish you the very best luck and a time as peaceful as it can be given this sort of situation. I further hope, that you get to enjoy as many wonderful moments as you can during your remaining time here between us - may it be in game or in your real life with family and friends. Take any chance you can get to experience everything you feel you might have missed so far and for this I wish you the very best and I hope that any upcoming treatment will help you to spend your days here as active and painless as possible.

Regarding your experiences in ED, I'd be happy to share some joyful moments with you in game in the next months. As a fellow and dedicated explorer (also ranked Elite II) your CMDRs name definitely rings a bell, I'm sure to have read your name on "first discovered by" messages not only by one occasion. I'd feel honored to share knowledge, experiences with you and I'm up to many different tasks even if it would be simply to escort your ship during a mining session to protect you against pirates. Besides exploring I also spent some considerable time in exploring places of history, trading, mining, visiting guardian ruins, some bounty hunting or defend the bubble against the thargoids. But I still missed out some activities, too - like visiting more types of thargoid surface sites rather than barnacles or some crashed ships and there are so many codex entries which I still hope to find and see with my very own eyes at some day.
In case you want to set foot and place your name in a galactic region you haven't visited so far, my carrier would be pleased to bring you there, as a fellow explorer I want to offer you that as well. If you're interested in any of this I mentioned before, send me a request in-game and/or in Inara (Comlag1984), I would be happy to meet you some day out in the black.

As I live in Germany, I think our schedules could go well along, I'm regularly on, I play in Moebius PVE and Open.

Best,

Florian (CMDR Comlag1984)

Very sorry to hear, really moving story.

PS CMDR here, so unfortunately not able to wing up.

But if you should need any advice I am always available via PM.

Not sure if you know this graphic and afaik it has not been updated for Odyssey, but still an impressive overview of what can be done in ED:

Dear Paul,

I am sorry to read of your diagnosis. I was very moved by your post and hope you have many more days ahead playing the game and enjoying life.

I do not get to play the game all that often at present but would be glad to see you in the game if we get the chance (I am Commander Edmundus and, like you, have been playing since the 1980s). I was motivated by your post to make a donation to the Bone Cancer Research Trust this evening.

All the very best.

First of all i give you my respect to be open about your condition... not many people will have to courage to talk about this openly to strangers... i will send you a friend request and if there is a place you want to be taken on days you can't play it would be an honor to bring you there whit my fleet carrier.

And this is to frontier...
Wen will you finely put those beacons for fallen cmdr's ?

So that they can stay for ever in elite galaxy...

Hey all,

I'm Paul, CMDR Vernon in game. I've been CMDR Vernon since 1984 when I was 10.

I've been given approximately 12 months to live. I'm based in the UK.

On the 8th November I received the news that my cancer had returned and it is terminal.

I've always played independently, got about 3 hours in multicrew and never flown in a wing. I've never mined.

I'm currently in hospital after having an undiagnosed soft tumour removed from my upper spine on the 12th November and I also have the terminal bone tumours on my ribs and lower spine and mets in my lungs.

I'll be unreliably on and off the game over the coming months but I'd like to explore parts of the game I've never bothered with too much if I can and for that I need the community to help.

My main role has always been an explorer. I play in Odyssey and am ELITE 2 explorer, cataloguer, broker, expert defenceless ranks.

I've never gone in for the grind and I don't want to now, what I have in game, I've earnt the long way round.

I currently fly a Krait Phantom, armed and engineered with a respectible 53Ly range. I'm not aiming to make billions or any of that, just looking for semi reliable players that might want to team up once in a while in an evening to help me explore more of the game. This might be a few weeks away at least at the moment!

Other ships I have are from memory, a python, dbx, dolphin, orca, aspx, a collection of vipers and eagles and my old Sidewinder.

My machine is still struggling with fps on Odyssey in settlements so not fussed about that side of things at the moment. I just want to see what else I've been missing. I love Elite the way I play it but all the same I want to explore more of the games before my time is up.

Before my terminal diagnosis, this was my story.

Thanks

Paul
Hi Paul

I'd be honoured to fly alongside you. I've been offline for a few months now - work/life etc... - but will jump back into the cockpit in the next day or two to send you a friend request.

O7 CMDR - see you in the black.

I'm very sorry to hear about your condition. Stay strong and keep fighting. I can't promise 100% yet, but once FC concourses drop I intend to head "north" to the third Guardian bubble close to the Galactic Core and hunt for undiscovered Guardian Ruins (around system HEN 2-333). I'd be honored to have you with me onboard my FC. The Havamal (XHB-L6M) will always have landing pad 07 reserved for you. I'm from Germany and play in Eurasian Mobius PG

Thank you all again so much for your replies. I've had a couple of setbacks with recovery so will be out of game for a while longer yet. Please be assured your best wishes are very much appreciated though and whilst I may not be replying to all, I am reading all and intend to reply when I'm better able to.

Thanks again.

Paul

Hi cmdr - so sorry to hear about the setbacks. Hope things improve, and you're back in the game soon. I'm sure you'll have a lot of friend requests waiting for you!

Hi, Vernon.

Very sorry to hear about your diagnosis and illness. I can only offer you the best wishes and the hope that Elite may offer you much entertainment as well as many new friends!

If it's not too much trouble, post your system specs when you get the opportunity. It's quite possible that one of our forum members has spare components (or even an extra laptop with a discrete GPU) around that would be a suitable low-effort upgrade.
It's an i7 9750H based MSI laptop with 32GB RAM, 1TB NVMe dedicated to the game with an RTX2060 6GB RAM which I run at 2K on an external monitor using the laptop monitor and a third portrait monitor that I upcycled from a dead laptop for third party tools to run on. I usually run EDDiscovery on the 1080p screens.

FPS in game is fine everywhere apart from settlements and that is the weird stuttering effect that occurs periodically.

You never know, by the time I'm home, update 9 will have dropped and I'll get to see Odyssey in all its glory.

The photo shows an old DELL work laptop there too which I no longer have but you get the idea of my rig.

If you look carefully, there's an eye/head tracker too.

Space wise I'm limited so the HOTAS is only there when needed.
