Newcomer / Intro The 1001newbie tips thread

If you pick up a mission in the Bulletin Board to "find x tons of y" come back to the same location and redeem it through the Bulletin Board. (Don't do as I did, recently, which was to sell it through the trade screen - doh !) Otherwise you get a fine for not completing on time.

Remember to click "Rep" to the originator of a Forum post you like - it encourages him .... and makes you feel good.

+1 (I remembered this time)

panic and flee?

#155 if you panic and flee, you become a better target for a while, if a noob you will be shot down. It may be better to try to not panic and tuck in behind your attacker before deciding what to do next....

#156 If its late, dont take on "multipart" missions... it could mean a very very long night..

When an interdiction (against you) starts, while you throttle to zero, target your interdictor. It will tell you what type of ship it is, and whether it is a player (CMDR) or NPC. When you drop to normal space, you will already know whether to fight or flee.

#158
when you get cash and super kit out your ship and deploy and fire your twin beam lasers at someone,
bear in mind that the reason your ship begins to melt, your shields turn off and you start running out of oxygen is that you didnt balance your ship with an adequate power supply and heat sink....

swiftly turn things off that you bought and you'll be able to breathe again and if lucky make a hasty escape.

This 13 page thread was an excellent read. Thanks to everyone who took the time to help the new players out. I have taken some notes and can't wait to go try so great ideas I just learned.
An yes I did not forget to hit the rep button on the really good ones. Thanks again Commanders.

Thanks for this one! I kept hitting H for hostile to target who was interdicting me, but that always put me behind the 8 ball as the interdictor is not Hostile until they start firing on you, using the Y can give me a few second chance to target before they go Hostile giving me a fighting chance! :)

Spend your time scanning everything you can find, until you can afford an advanced-discovery-scanner, and a detailed-surface-scanner, then scan some more. Also try to participate in as many community-goals as possible, you'll be in a fully kitted Vulture fairly quick. Once you've acquired a Vulture, find a system with medium to high security, and pristine or major-reserves, and hunt bounties at resource-extraction-sites. This is when the credit-flow begins to hasten.

EDIT:

: When upgrading to a new ship, sell or downgrade all the modules first, modules are fully-refundable, but ship-hulls lose ten-percent at sale.

This is true, although at first it does not appear so. When you downgrade something (as opposed to just removing it) you do not get back the full amount, as you are also fitting a lesser component. However, when you upgraded it in the first place you did not pay the full price, as you got back the value of the lesser component. So, if you had an E rated device worth 10,000cr, and you fitted an A rated device worth 100,000cr, you only paid 90,000cr, and when you replace that A rated device with the E unit, you get back 90,000cr.

This tip is probably obvious to seasoned players but might not be to new commanders.
When you strip a ship to sell it, if possible sell the item leaving an empty bay. Some bays must have something in them but when you can an empty bay is better.

I'll be doing a lot of reading here before I'm ready to start. great idea these tips thank you to all that contributed and put it together

Severe lack of mining tips on here so here's a couple (Lost track of the numbers so just pop in as appropriate). I appreciate mining isn't a newbie job, but I see it as more "Newbie Miner" tips:

Look for Metallic Rings AND Pristine reserves. Anything else is pretty much worthless owing to the rarity of high profit materials. Once found, STEER CLEAR of RES Sites as these are often (if not always) populated with pirates. Just find the ring and approach the metallic (grey/silver) parts at safe speed, you will drop out the same way as when you get too close to a planet/star.

A Refinery is necessary. You cannot mine without it, as there is no storing unrefined fragments. If you cannot fit one with at least 4 bins, you will spend A LOT of time staring at the systems panel venting worthless materials. Similarly, do not fit a Class 4 Refinery if that's most of your cargo space gone. You may spend less time venting, but you will spend more time travelling than you will mining, which will seriousky hurt how much credits you earn.

Collector Limpets speed up the mining process considerably but require a Collector Limpet Controller which reduces your maximum cargo capacity. Balancing the size of your control module vs the speed which you mine fragments.
-to clarify, with class 1 mining lasers there is absolutely no need to have 3 or 4 collector limpets out at once, so equip a smaller control module. Conversely, if you have Class 2 mining lasers, 1 limpet will have you waiting ages to finish collecting the fragments even AFTER the asteroid is depleted.

Prospector Limpets are COMPLETELY optional, and perhaps not recommended for smaller ships as, once again, they require a seperate control module in your internal compartments, (i.e. Prospector Limpet Controller). However there is a hidden bonus to using them besides getting a read on the composition of the asateroid. Prospected asteroids will net you twice as many fragments as the same asteroid without prospecting. (If an asteroid would normally give you ten fragments, prospecting it will give you 20).

The most worthwhile materials to mine for are Palladium, Platinum and Painite, more commonly referred to as the "three P's", but Gold is a viable alternative and there are frequently bulletin board missions asking for Osmium at a rate of 50-100k per ton. The more cargo you can hold, the less fussy you can afford to be. For example, mining in a cobra should be dedicated to only the three P's where possible. However in a Python or Anaconda, just blast every rock and ditch cheaper stuff or limpets to make room for more profitable materials as required. (Personal note: I find that if you spend less than one hour mining between trips to and from the station(s), you are either VERY lucky, or not being fussy enough with what you collect)

Do not hesitate to dump your limpets no matter what you are mining. Limpets are ~100cr per ton. There is nothing you can mine that will earn you less. If you are returning to the station with half your cargo filled with limpets, you're doing it wrong. In addition to this, don't leave the station full to the brim with limpets either, you will be dumping them constantly. Start by leaving 3/4 or 2/3 of your cargo empty, and adjust accordingly if you are running out before you are full, or dumping loads of them.

I have plenty more, but this is probably enough to get you started at least.

If you find yourself having to run from a fight, particularly in RES areas with asteroids, be very careful not to collide with anything even if it means taking fire. No shields + high speed collision = insurance claim and lost bounties which could easily cost you 1m in lost revenue.

Just started playing this game over last weekend and yeah...game was recommended by friends and it looked good but...is there a refund option? Failed a mission had absolutely no idea what I was supposed to be doing. Don't know how to scan or where and keep getting killed by interdiction somethings that start firing on me for no reason. Gotta say, after 4 days, I'm wondering if there's a refund option?

Why don't you post a message for help with these topics first, see if others can guide you through the frustrations. Interdiction for example is fairly simple to grasp once it has been explained, but if you don't know about it then yeah it does come across as whoa what was that about...
