Newcomer / Intro The 1001newbie tips thread

22. ATM Picking up any cargo you didn't buy yourself (even if you only found it in space) is 'stolen' not salvage, you will get fined for being discovered to be carrying it. Sell it in a Black Market in the Contacts section of a Spaceport.

23. Make sure that yo uget the 'all clear' from the scanner before firing on a ship, if they aren't explicitly "Wanted" in the bottom left, you will get fined for attacking them.

Learn to use yaw or better still get some pedals
Learn the importance of throttle control
For the 1st couple of hours, avoid all combat until you have some cash under your belt and understand the flight mechanics
Remember that carrying cargo reduces your jump distance

There is no up or down in space!

27. Learn to use your thrusters, throttle gives you speed, thrusters give you pro control.
27 a: Know where you have mapped the full stop (0% throttle). This is an invaluable tool for many things. I generally enter a space port under manual control of thrusters...same speed as throttle, but when I stop using the thruster the output immediately goes to 0.

28. When upgrading your ship, remember to check that you have enough power. Better weapons don't work if you can't turn them on.

29. Assign your discovery scanner to a fire group, use it when you reach an unexplored system. (Or sell it to save the weight.)

30. Discover scanner pings the general location of stuff. Getting closer, facing an object, and waiting for the scan to finish gets you a more detailed picture. Cartography pays for either or both.

31. Can't see something because it's below your ship? Turn upside down. You're in space, down only matters when you're trying to land.

32. Trade data can become outdated, so the import/export info for distant systems can be wrong. But you can buy updates.

For trading missions, if you're uncertain about the destination, visit the system first so as to get a better idea of the layout of the planets and stations, so you won't accept a mission you'll be unable to complete in time.

Don't know how you all have missed this one its should have been number ONE!

34. When entering or leaving a space station look out for the nav lights either side of the docking entrance long slot. and on the end of the cattle grid on the out side. You will see a RED and a GREEN set. The unwritten rule is to always fly on the GREEN side and leave the RED side free for traffic traveling in the other direction.

Only exceptions are ships larger than a Type 6 which need more room so use the middle and the stupid NPC that have never joined the Pilots Federation.

19. After buying a new weapon or defensive system, make an empty run somewhere dangerous to try it out. Don't wait until you are interdicted to find out that you forgot to buy missiles or your power consumption with hardpoints deployed exceeds your ship's available power output.

Addendum to above:
19a. Get into the habit of assigning new weapons as soon as you buy them, don't wait until you are in combat to find that your brand new beam laser isn't assigned to the primary fire button .

35. If trade is your game, the first and most cost effective upgrade for your Sidey should be a 4-ton cargo bay.
-
36. The outfitting screen gives real-time information on range and power requirement changes as you mouseover possible options. Make sure you are clear what these changes imply before committing to the upgrade.

37. Upgrade classification: G to A is better, but a given improvement in spec may be accompanied by a downside of increased weight. 1 to 6 is bigger, and defines the limit to what can be fitted in a given bay. Most upratings are accompanied by increasing power requirements.

38. Don't update to an "A" rating component, but a smaller class. Keep the same size class and save up.

Guess how I know. Saw an "A" rating FSD, fitted it to my Cobra. Only size class 2, so I could not even leave the galaxy (<4ly jump)
My old class 4 FSD was no where to be found when I wanted to buy it back! Solution, sell the Cobra, get a sidey, and find another Cobra to buy,

39. Assign hot key for chatting / replying to other commanders

40. Check the bulletins when entering a dock before selling commodities - there might be a mission that you can inst-complete for a higher profit

41. The game can be played with keyboard and mouse just fine. A flight stick makes smooth flight and immersion easier but is in no way required. If you've got a multi button mouse, map weapons/gear/SC/Jump to the mouse and leave your left hand to work throttle, thrusters and yaw.

My biggest noob head scrathcher was:

42. Land facing the Control Tower. Or you'll just skid around the pad getting confused.
43. Do NOT cancel dock whilst inside a station. They take offense and shoot your face off.

41. Use the Milky Way as your compass. "Coreward" is a useful direction to know on long, multi-jump routes.
41 b. Also pay attention to the dust lanes: Are they "above" or below" the plane of the Milky Way? Getting THAT bit wrong can send you 180 degrees off course.
42. If you get directions befuddled while navigating around the galaxy map, exit and re-enter it. That will set your POV to the default
