Newcomer / Intro The 1001newbie tips thread

They dropped it, but last I heard they are working on getting it back in some capacity.

How successful is it? 100%, meaning you're missile-proof with several point-defenses on you?

They still need to actually hit the missiles, so there is no guarantee.
And it matters where you put them on your ship.

If you have them on top and the missile comes from below, it can't hit the missile and can't do anything.

So try to cover blind spots when fitting them.

Mining:
1. Always look for Pristine Reserves systems and specifically Metallic resource areas
2. Asteroid clusters are a waste of your time find planetary rings(if a planets has multiple rings check the planet in system view to see which ring as the Metallic reserves and not every system will have Metallic)
2.a When mining in a ring start on the outer edge of the ring and work your way to the planet this helps you keep oriented so you don't fly in circles.

Just as a quick note (and an honest to goodness reminder that the document is still being read by some), #6 and #35 seem duplicitous. Appreciate the work, just the same.

Thread seems dead, will post tip anyway.

Keep an eye on your system map, knowing when a ship is following can be helpful in dodging the impending interdiction.

If you are being interdicted and cannot be sure about your escape. You can throttle down to zero and submit, submitting and not being forced out can mean your FSD will cool down faster,

Watching a person play elite dangerous on YouTube can be very helpful in understanding the UI

Here's a tip:
If you're not a bounty hunter or regularly involved in combat, do the combat tutorials regularly.
This will keep your combat skills in check for the odd occassion that an interdiction is successful, and at the very least, you will know how to use evasive action and avoid damage while charging your FSD.

Subnote:
Sidewinder face-off is a particularly tricky one, but also possibly the most important as it will teach you how to aim the more powerful fixed weapons whilst avoiding damage at the same time in a 1v1 conflict.

Combat: When fighting in a RES (asteroid field) on the dark side of the planet, turn the lights on. You might spot an asteroid just in time to evade it.

If you're overhearing dangerously and don't know why, quit the game immediately. You might have put silent running on by mistake.

In combat, jab the accelerator or decelerator rather than keep the keep pressed down.

If you're in a dog fight and more ships from the same faction are against you, concentrate on the one you startedon and the remaining migs will bug out when you kill him.

Fly upside down when docking, bywhich I mean, have your target in sight.

i lost track of the numbers :-(

- the mass of other ships around you still affects your speed in hyperspeed mode. If you're in a two-sun system going to the other one, it's worth getting some distance from the standard-route before facing your actual destination. this can make the difference if you travel at 60c or >700c.

- If you want to land on an outpost and the pads landing direction is towards you. The fastest way to land is approaching upside down, set the throttle to zero when the pad is above you, then pull up and use the thruster to get to the pad. This is quite usefull when you're smuggling. but i'd practise it first.

- When you go bounty hunting, make sure you have your target fully scanned before you open fire. Even if the security is already shooting at it. You will become wanted if you shoot before your shipcomputer KNOWS the target is wanted.

When bounty hunting in a RES or Nav Beacon cash in the bounties regularly otherwise a lot of time and credits can be wasted by using the "just one more before I cash in" approach.

When you are on launch pad and parts of a blown up ship lands on you go to the hanger immediately before the station shoots at the pieces. Blew my ship completely up in 30 sec!

Dont drink and drive (fly). It can cost your ship and cargo ;)

And: If your ship burns or need to get cold when you stuck beside a sun, turn off the life support systems in the right monitor. You will have several minutes with extra oxygen supply that you can use i.e. to start a FSD.

PS: Thx for the tips and https://docs.google.com/document/d/1...it?usp=sharing. I am new to ED and found couple interesting points here

Now we have new players and the game has changed significantly since release, I think it's time this old warhorse was pressed into service again.

If hunting players/robots in supercruise, sit as close to the sun as you can, facing the direction of the main direction of travel. This will prevent people getting behind you to interdict (particularly annoying NPC interdictions) and make sure you are behind most ships for interdicting purposes.

Remember to leave difficult combat earlier in RES's than you would in Nav Beacons (or High Wake out (exit to another system)) because of mass lock.

requests for updating the googledoc should go to fw190a8, who set it up.

Reading the above post on interdiction for new CMDR's reminded me of a problem I had last week when I tried to interdict a pirate that was flying towards the main star in the system.

As soon as I started the interdiction tether the star suddenly approached very quickly and we both dropped out of Super Cruise very near to the star. This caused my ship to heat up very quickly and I decided that deploying weapons was a bad idea as it would make the heat situation worse.

Unfortunately due to the interdiction process I was on a long FSD cooldown - so I was trying not to throttle up as the heat situation became worse, while trying to evade an angry pirate who was firing at me for all he was worth!!

My temperature hit 195 deg as the frameshift drive kicked in and I barely managed to escape the sun and that crazy pirate.

Moral of the story is be careful where you point your Frameshift Interdictor - towards a star is not recommended.

In the past your excellent tool, thread has been added to EDCodex. Before EDCodex was released on the 17th of August you have received in the period 5th - 10th of August a PM with an invitation and a special link. After registering and logging in you would automatically become owner of your entry. According to the admin tool(s) you haven't used the special link (yet). Perhaps you have missed the PM or have been (temporarily) away from ED. Its also possible you choose not to claim your entry. Note: Its also possible to assign another commander editing rights for your entry. In either case please send us a PM. You can find your EDCodex entry here.

Alternative way to get ownership
The special link will cease to function in the (near) future, for security reasons. Should you after that point want to become owner of your entry you can use the "Claim ownership" button. In that case please send biobob or myself a PM with the email addressed you used for registration - for verification. You can also use this procedure if you no longer have the PM.

What is EDCodex:
Its a website with a database of currently approx 215+ tools, threads, websites, videos for ED. Any one can and is encouraged to add entries there. EDCodex is and should be community-driven. EDCodex companion thread. Its equally suited for PC's, tablets and smartphones and has RSS feeds.

With kind regards,
Biobob

You can still make decent CR bounty hunting and not be the tank. If you are learning combat, practice stalking the wanted prey until
the feds open fire, they are very well paid, make them earn it as tanks. Oh, dont be in such a hurry to not notice the target is not only wanted, but also has wingmen!
My eagle has been de-feathered a few times by ignoring that.
