The Adventures of Bomba Luigi on Planet Wilson: The Movie
https://youtu.be/OsfkrKfWsqo
The incredible adventure of Cmdr Bomba Luigi trapped on 'Planet Wilson' for more than two weeks in his SRV. At first alone, then with an able and dedicated rescue team around him, as he battles to try to get out of the immense canyon he is trapped in to rendezvous with his replacement ship.
By the end of the ten day confine Bomba had cajoled and bullied a performance from the SRV that was probably never envisioned by it's designers and surpassed what anyone thought was possible. The rescue team quickly learnt how to transport Bomba's SRV on various types of ships in various situations. How to move vertically upwards, how to move horizontally along. Each with it's nuanced differences depending on size of ship. And who would have thought that the Sidewinder would prove one of the most useful ships in SRV rescue? Or that the mighty Anaconda would be so adapted to a rescue role in the tight confines at the bottom of a deep and jagged canyon?
Like Nam, or Altamont, if you were there, you'll understand. You'll understand just how little this movie gets across about how big that canyon was, how dark that canyon was. The huge mountains that were swallowed up and dwarfed by the canyon. The Plateau of Hope which, like the Cape of Good Hope, should have been called The Plateau of Despair. There were other adventures going on too. Commanders were scouting and mapping, and loosing SRVs down there. To condense more than two weeks in the canyon and on Planet Wilson into an hour does not do full justice to the events, to the team work, to Bomba's unfaltering cheerful determination and the genuine seat-of-the-pants-ness of the whole thing.
My thanks to all the commanders who provided footage to make this movie possible. This was intended to provide a documentary souvenir for those who were there, and attempt to retell to those who weren't a story that was unique, spontaneous, engaging and thrilling. A story of individual fortitude and collective effort.
This movie provides a postcard of the trip. Something to remember it by.
This movie is above all a bit of fun, and I hope you all enjoy it.
Fly safe. And if you can't fly safe, fly crazy.
