"The Aquarian Job" goes badly wrong - How I lost a ship mid-race but am still in the running (by driving an SRV 3000 km)

I'll keep progress updates in this thread.

As of last night I've made about 230km of progress, in a bit over an hour. The biggest slowdown is having to stop and scrape for materials, since I'm short on Nickel and Iron. I'm thinking I should go slow for a bit to stockpile as much as I can, then get up to a steady 90-100 m/s and just cruise.

EDIT: I did it! You can watch a recorded stream of the last few hundred KM and the finish here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lbrbfySFl8

I'm following your progress with bated breath.

Also, check your supplies for tier two and three SRV repairs. IIRC, they don't use nickel or iron, also reinforces your SRV's hull, allowing you to absorb more damage.

Tier 2 does use Nickel (quite a lot of it) but Tier 3 doesn't. I've actually got enough for 10 or so of the tier 3 repair, but since I can't reliably scavenge those materials I want to save the premium repairs for emergencies. (e.g. I get going way too fast or am about to collide with unexpectedly gnarly terrain).

love it!

One day I hope to be sufficiently skilled to utter that sentence :)

my design skillz match my SRV skillz [wacko]

Sushi, if you would like some aerial reconnaissance support (or just some company!), just let me know roughly what time you'll be online.

Good luck with the journey!

I appreciate the offers of company, but given that having other players in the instance apparently increases collision damage it's probably not wise to collect spectators while I'm moving at high speed. :) Feel free to friend me in-game and send a message, no guarantee I'll respond though if I'm in the middle of a run!

So after the initial run I already mentioned, I was here:

Nav says I've come about 534 km so far.

As I curve around the planet the distance from Cooper Arena will grow more and more slowly while the distance to Kronecker Beacon shrinks faster and faster. In any case, I'm about 1/6 of the way there so far.

Today's terrain was initially full of canyons, but then opened up to a nice mostly-flat cratered plain dotted with occasional fields of hillocks. Mostly straightforward, although I had a couple of close calls: you never know when you'll randomly take 40% damage from what seemed like a smooth bounce. I'm generally repairing once I get down to 60% or so, and also slowing down to 80 or so when relatively low. The rest of the time I'm targeting 90-100 m/s as my speed.

I've got a materials for a couple dozen repair syntheses, which should last me another several hundred KM.

I don't have time to edit it, but I'll start an upload of some raw footage now and post a link here later when it's ready. It should give some idea what the regular rhythm looks like.

Superb progress ... nice going!

So distances to surface locations are direct lines straight through the planet then? (bit of a shame but not entirely surprising I suppose).

Correct. Makes sense from a spaceship perspective, less so from a driving one. And I doubt Frontier was planning on many people choosing to drive to destinations on the far side of the planet. What kind of insane person would try that? :D
