The Art of the Grief: A Primer on Open Play Expectations

The way i see it is that Open play was the mode the game is designed for, and if that is how it is designed then imo it should be played that way and embraced whilst doing so.

I have never played the modern Elite games but I have watched plenty of my friends play it and from my perspective the game seems much more fun when you have that extra layer of potential pvp added to it.
I no doubt will get 'griefed' by some in my time on Elite, but that isn't something to complain about. It is part and parcel of the game and its universe and something I may very well rage at yet in that moment but I will embrace it too because if i get caught out and destroyed I will learn from it and learn why i ended up in that position.

From what i can tell, have seen and have been told by friends the pvp griefing is over exaggerated on the scale of how often it actually happens with the majority of players actually quite friendly when you meet them and that the AI will be a far greater threat for more of the time I will spend in the game in OPEN.

For me I am super stoked for this game and looking forward to all the new experiences of the Elite universe no matter what happens, bring it on.

I'd be interested to know what you would be able learn from having your mid-level ship virtually insta-killed by a wing of 4 high-tier engineered, combat optimised fighters.

My conclusion is to not play the Open environment whilst playing in the very area that has the greatest player population and activity, which actually totally defeats the entire object of playing the Open environment, but your mileage may differ...

The point is that no-one is saying PVP is not a part of the game but that you accept the risk of flying in risky areas and if you don't want that risk - and a lot don't - then you fly in less risky zones.

The other larger factor is that they want to reduce over engineered ships trolling noobs who have zero chance of survival irrespective of how well they fly because the odds are always stacked against them. When said noob gets an over engineered ship they can go join the melee but they also get the space to 'git gud' before they throw the game in the bin and walk off having never had the opportunity to experience the game because some bunch of angry 12 year olds with more time and money than sense who spend all their time in front of a playsatan with no responsibility in the RW, decides its Friday night fun to harass some folks and livestream it for sheets and giggles.

We had the king punch thing over here - quickly renamed the coward punch. The teenage gag was to go out on a Friday night and smack someone, anyone, as hard as you can in the face from out of the blue and knock them out. Problem was, the resulting fall can be fatal. So when folks actually started dying, it became a lot more serious. Now - I ain't saying a computer game is as serious as life or death - what I am saying is the same low life scumbags who hit complete strangers in the face for absolutely no reason and with no warning, also play console games.

Law must be explicit, fairness must be exercised or its all hell breaking loose time.

well all i know is im getting a cobra mk3 the clearing out of the bubble as soon as i am able, before Harry Potter and the SDC (Ship Destroying Cretins) get the claws on the galaxy

Here are my tactics which may help.
(I will say that I do not play as a pirate or engage in combat with other human players unless they attack me, which has only occurred once in the last 6-9 months due to my tactics)

1. I play 90% in open, trading doing missions ETC.
2. If you are coming back into the bubble with 10 million of exploration credits to cash in. No matter how big your undercarriage is --switch to Solo 1000 Ly out..
3. When you jump into any CG, engineer system, Sol, Lave ETC, DO A 180 straight away so that your rear is facing the sun and hit 0% throttle. Pause until all the contacts pop up and have a look at them.
4. Always watch your radar and have a look at all human players to see if they are wanted, in a fighter or called something like 'maniac pirate'. That will give you an idea who to avoid having on your 6.
5. Risk assess then either:-
(a) Fly to your destination ASAP
or
(b)Go perpendicular to the solar plain IE straight up or down and zig zag to your destination, even fly past it and loop around into it. You will see if anyone is chasing you. If they do point towards them, drop into normal space and wait a while (on full throttle) or jump to another system and start again or menu switch to solo,
or
(c) menu log and switch to solo.

If you chose (b) any pirates have to work as a team to get in front and behind you and it becomes obvious, plus they can not all jump on you as a wing at the same time very easily.

This is playing the game within the rules, it is fun and the pirates and griefiers are making it more exciting for me by adding a sense of danger.

If you get interdicted, submit and do anything except combat log, it means you have lost , accept it in good spirits its a game and you are in open-- you had the option to go into solo when you risk assessed.

It's like real life, one should always beware of their surroundings. But unlike real life in the old days, where one would just get robbed, today they rob and kill ya. The amount of booty they gather doesn't seem to matter, it's simply icing on the cake. Their main purpose isn't to rob, it's to put another notch on their gun handle.

1 - is it impossible to fight back?

2 - can you round up some buddies and return to attack the pirates?

You can fight back if you want.
The best way is to submit to the interdiction, start turning as soon as you can to stamrt head to head.
As soon as you submit,
Hit 50% throttle and all pips to engine --- that will make you turn quicker.
Then all pips to weapons and open fire or let rip with missiles
You need to play with your shield weapons and engine pips depending on if you are turning running shooting or if shields are down
Another tip is always fly with engine pips full then if you get interdicted, you can run boost run boost quickly if you chose not to fight. Then high wake away

join an org or get pals to form a wing then go and chose someone/ other wing to fight with

That's good information but remember you are talking to people who don't have the game. What are pips?

Pips are power points you assign between weapons, shields and engines. With the time you have before release I'd recommend looking at some of the tutorial info and stuff. The PS4 discord server has a raft of getting started help. Feel free to pop along.

If that does not appeal try the newcomers forum here.

Sorry,

You can assign/divert power to systems (shields), weapons or engines. Managing this power distribution is important, the distribution is shown on the right hand side of your cockpit as SYS WEAP and ENG. Depending on your control method it will be done in a different way.

As far as I know all ships turn quickest at 50% throttle, I have dedicated switch to go direct to 50% for use in combat.

As said above watch some tutorials there are loads.

I would be interested how it looks/works on PlayStation VR, so if you have one let us know. On PC the sense of scale of the planets and the huge stations is fantastic. Plus you actually think you are in the cockpit.

Thanks for the help. This is a great forum for getting answers to questions. I was watching tutorials and reading stuff on the engineering forum and other stuff for a while but I've reached the saturation point with tutorials now and just want to get the game.

I'd read about going into solo before if you had a lot of exploration data but it's handy to have a guide on how far out of the bubble to do it =]

Don't forget too that selling exploration data will increase your reputation with the controlling faction of that station. So you may want to hold off selling it to the first station you see.

Or, some engineers will also accept exploration data at their stations which will increase your rep with the engineer (helps with raising the level of the engineer upgrades available from them).

Or, again, if you time an exploration trip right (i.e. lucky!), you may find an exploration data community goal is running when you get back :)

You still need to look out for NPCs and you probably will not find any mean players until 300ish LY from sol but as you can do 1000 LY in one sitting it's a good guide

Also you may have got rusty at docking and defence so be extra careful
On my first trip back from SAG A I had forgotten to ask permission to dock it was nearly curtains

Hey kid... want to buy some data? It's the dankest exploration data this side of the bubble. -- Pusherman

I may well pick this up on the PS4, Ideally I want to build a gaming PC to play on but depending on cash flow I might have to wait until 3rd or 4th Q of this year, if the PS4 version drops first I'm totally going ot take a look. However I'm intending to play almost exclusively solo mode, I'm just not interested in PvP play (I had that drummed out of me when playing Eve) and the fact that open mode is all PvP means I'm really not likely to ever go into open. I may well end up taking advantage of the private groups thing to play with some buddies, but I can trust them.

Anyway, I hope that all the players who enjoy PvP enjoy open, but I'll stick to solo I think.

I should add for new players that if you find you can dump all your exploration data in a live community goal, do NOT forget to sign up to the CG (on the mission board) BEFORE you start selling the data (otherwise it will not count for the CG!).

Did that for some bounties once in a cg, I wasn't best pleased when 5Mil of bounty credits moved my cg rank absolutely nowhere, and the penny dropped. D'oh!
