The Bounty Hunting & Bounties tips, and general discussion thread

Well, if you pledge for a power, you are going to get interdicted and shot almost anywhere in the galaxy anyway.
I try to get my bounties as high as possible, makes me proud (and also maybe scare the sh*t out of traders passing by). I got p*ssed when I ran out of oxygen (that damn station did not have repair service!) and they became all dormant. I will need to re-activate them ASAP! :)

I just had a bounty re-activate in Neuants (sp?) - It showed that it was a dormant $200k bounty, so I figured that since it's dormant I can go dock and I found out as soon as I entered that BAM bounty back up. Luckily the station didn't fire on me, just a whole pack of cops were at the door as soon as I turned around and bolted. I don't mind the bounty, just wish I'd known so I didn't have to wast the time going back and getting a sidewinder to sneak back into the station. The bounty thing is very confusing- seems that no one really has all the facts on how it works.

Newb bounty hunter advice

Hi folks,

I'm pretty new to the game. I have a slightly upgraded Eagle and having a go at bounty hunting.

I took a contact to hunt down a specific guy in a specific system. I got there, found the guy straight away and flew up to him but he just warped away before I could even get close.

I didn't have a frame shift wake scanner so is that it? I can't complete the contract now can I?

Does this mean I definitely need a wake scanner to take on contracts? as i had a wanted scanner, not so useful I guess.

Also I'm not sure what to do to get wanted pilots to engage in combat.

After googling I go and hang out around the nav beacon - I'm guessing in super cruise - and keep checking my targeting and scan till I find a wanted. But then 9 times out of 10 he seems to just warp away before I can catch him. Or just be in super cruise too, so I can't shoot him.

Do I need a interdiction thing as well?

Should I wait till I can get a bigger ship?

And lastly, should I aim for a Cobra next? or maybe a Viper?

Cheers

The useful thing for these missions is an interdictor ... you have to get behind the target and get in range and then press the button you have assigned to the interdictor.

I don't know if its possible to do these missions without an interdictor, but i think it is because afaik they dont "warp" or jump away but simply leave supercruise ...
so you could try to target their wake signal, which should be a "weak signal", fly there and leave supercruise when in range (as you would do with f.e. the nav-signal or a station).

So far i never had to use a wake scanner myself.

Next ship should be a viper imho, but wait until you can at least d-grade it before you buy, and dont forget about insurance as well ... from there i would suggest the vulture if you are into bounty hunting
or maybe a cobra in between as a multi-role (with the option to do some cargo runs etc.).

Thats the viper build i used long long time ago ;) http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=70M,7u57u54wt4wt3we01Q,2-4s4s4s3m4s5K3c,4xy7Pc7dq2Uc
There might be better builds though, not a viper expert ...

The best place to find pirates is RES, resource extraction site.
Other options are USS/SSS, nav becon (not in supercruise), or just scan them in supercruise and then interdict (you need fsd interdictor installed).

guess again :)

I did some nav beacon sitting myself, but while it is fun you won't make much money. Try resource extraction sites (= RES), if you want to hunt "wanted"-ships. Also you do need the "wanted scanner" (= Kill warrant scanner)! It can vastly increase your bounty!

If you take assignation mission a frame shift interdictor is useful but targets tend to drop from sc time to time. As said before the target will change to white low energy wake. Get close so speed and distance are blue on bottom left the drop out when safe disengage is displayed.

Wake scanner is not needed.

Pirate in general can be found in sc nav or res.

The problem is, when your bounty expires, it disappears from your GUI. So how can you find where you got the bounty in order to pay of the fine?
I hope there are plans to address this as it is a bit annoying. I have a few legacy fines (and a couple of active bounties that are about to become legacy fines) from my early experiments with the new bounty hunting and assassination mission mechanics. Main lesson learned: 'MISSION TARGET' does not necessarily mean it's legal to attack them :).

Now that I've settled into my role of ethical bounty hunter / assassin I'm not generating any new bounties, but I'd like to know where these legacy fines are so I can dash into the systems and pay them off. Right now I'm treating every security scan as a possible prelude to a reactivated bounty and pew-pew, which is exciting but annoying, and remembering to check the Contacts menu whenever I dock. Short of writing down the list of systems in which I've been a naughty boy, I can't see a work-around for this.

This happened to me today and I still can't get my head around it. Maybe some of you can help.....

1. Took a T9 with 500 T of performance enhancers to Bunda
2. Got docking clearance at Faraday Ring so I entered the letterbox.
3. As soon as I got inside, the station opened fire on me for a reason I can't figure out.
4. My T9 is no more along with my cargo. It cost me 6 Million altogether including the insurance. ouch!
5. I notice I now have a 7 day bounty on my head worth 700 credits.
6. I try to get to Bunda again with a new T9 only I am now classed as WANTED ???
7. I notice that the 7 day bounty now expires in 3 minutes ?????????
8. I wait then I go to another station in the same system. No more WANTED tag. But can pay off a new fine.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

[EDIT] 6. Just remembered that I returned in a sidewinder as I didn't want to risk another T9

Yes. Me, but in a T7. Everything was fine. I got my landing pad assigned and headed on. 1.5 million credits insurance rate.

The way they handle the bounties and all the related problems is frustrating.

I wouldn't mind seeing this functionality added to all bounties, not just major faction bounties. Give us a hyperlink from the transactions tab to the corresponding system!

The way people talk about bounties is confusing for some people as they use words like "cleared" and "removed". There is an implication that it is gone for good and you no longer have to worry about it - which is wrong. Yes you are no longer Wanted, but depending on what happened to you to clear it (ugh, I just did it!) I mean become unWanted, it could come back. No matter what there is always the money cost - that never goes away until you pay it off.

If you get scanned by the faction that you owe the legacy fine to, it reactivates. I had that happen to me with a 1.8 million legacy fine.

That should not happen.
Legacy Fines remain as Legacy Fines
A Dormant Bounty can become an Active Bounty again if you're scanned though.

All of my legacy fines are from smuggling. They are given by the minor faction that had control of that station. I just do not go to those stations anymore, or hang around and let the rozzers scan me. One thing I am keeping an eye on is one system in particular. The system is in civil war and one of the factions that issued a 1.9 million fine is part of this war. I want to see if they loose, do they loose control of their station? If the other side wins, do they gain control? Can I now dock at that station? I actually have gone to these stations after receiving the fines, just to see if the legacy fine is working, and it is, you can see the fine listed. Does the legacy fine go with the faction that issued it? I would imagine so. I can see my fines staying with the station, only the faction that issued it. If so, am I let off freely in that system???

Here's a post on a local power losing control and the effects on the bounty on a player. We think we've worked it out, the player concerned is going to run a few more tests though.

Not sure what the bounty was for (speeding and clipping another ship?) but that sounds right to me. Smaller bounties do have a smaller timer on them.

I did a load of digging when I first got a bounty, this is the information I have pieced together. This thread and this post were particularly useful in working it all out.

You can not pay off a Bounty, you can only pay off Fines.

If you're Wanted then someone has put an Active Bounty on your head.

An Active Bounty has a timer that can last anywhere from 5 minutes to a maximum of 7 days depending on the size of your bounty. Examples...
  1. Friendly fire is about 100-200Cr and will last 5-10 Minutes.
  2. Killing an innocent pilot is 6000Cr and will last for 7 days.

When the bounty timer expires it says "ON H-JUMP" not "0hr 0min 0sec". You have to make a hyperspace jump before your legal status is recomputed.

Fines...
  1. You can pay them off
  2. You have 7 days before a Fine becomes an Active Bounty and you become Wanted.

If you have an Active Bounty a number of things could happen...
  1. You commit more crimes in the bounty issuers jurisdiction. The Active Bounty increases and the timer is reset. You are still Wanted.
  2. You get killed but the bounty is not claimed. The Active Bounty becomes a Dormant Bounty. You areno longer Wanted.
  3. You get killed and someone claims the bounty. The Active Bounty becomes a Legacy Fine of equal value. You are no longer Wanted.
  4. You survive the length of the bounty timer. The Active Bounty becomes a Legacy Fine of equal value. You are no longer Wanted.

If number 2 happened to you, you now have a Dormant Bounty on your head, this lasts for another 7 days and yet more things could happen...
  1. You are detected committing a crime in the bounty issuers jurisdiction. The Dormant Bounty becomes an Active Bounty again, the timer is reset. You become Wanted.
  2. You get scanned by an Authority Vessel in the bounty issuers jurisdiction. The Dormant Bounty becomes an Active Bounty again, the timer is reset. You become Wanted.
  3. You manage to not re-activate your Dormant Bounty for 7 days. The Dormant Bounty becomes a Legacy Fine of equal value.

Legacy Fines...
  1. You can finally wipe the slate clean and pay off the fine.
  2. They can never become an Active or Dormant Bounty ever again.
  3. You do not have to pay them off.
  4. They never go away unless you pay them off.
  5. If you're killed and then restart in the bounty issuers jurisdiction you will be forced to pay off any outstanding Legacy Fines during the re-purchase of your ship.

I would like some info on the length of the Dormant Bounty timer - As in if the Active Bounty was for only 3 days is the Dormant Bounty timer the same, or is it always 7 days?
If anyone reading this thinks I've missed something please do mention it, I'd like to know for my own records!
