The Bounty Hunting & Bounties tips, and general discussion thread

I always play open and I have a bounty on me, but I don't play anywhere near any of the main factions just because it doesn't seem realistic. I'll pirate ships in faction space, but I'm largely hanging out in anarchy systems or independent systems. I'm not just about going to make it easy on bounty hunters to find me.

In addition, you can identify between pirate and bounty hunter (especially useful when you're in an anarchy system) by checking their equipment after you scan them; hunters will have kill warrant scanners and an interdictor, and pirates will have cargo scanners and an interdictor. Traders are generally any clean cargo ship, and smugglers are generally any wanted ones. Your best bet to finishing these missions is to find these ships in signal sources out in deep space; interdicting them never counts, for some stupid reason, and the kill counter for these things is pretty wonky at a nav beacon (I've killed obvious pirates at beacons before only to find that they didn't get added to my mission kill counter).

I've been in the situation where I can't find the right Federation Station to claim the bounties and once my ship was destroyed all the bounties were lost.

I appreciate the replies I've seen about yeah this is Elite Dangerous not Elite Daycare but it's also Elite the business. Many of us here remember Elite from bygone days but newcomers from other games would have quit already in frustration and that is not good for the continuity and longevity of this game.

Fine, I'm old enough to be patient but if we want this game to grow and have the income to develop then we need new players to spend and making things so difficult for them to not be able to instantly get involved in this game is a sure way to reducing numbers and the game's eventual cessation. All I suggest is we cure the bugs, bounties get paid immediately into account so new players can have fun instead of spending time searching for the right system and correct faction to claim their dues and hope they aren't destroyed in the meantime when all their work and effort will be wasted. That to many is a rage quit and another possibly paying customer gone.

How is bounty being distributed now?

So in my Type 9 last night doing some cargo runs so I can finish my "A" upgrades to my ASP. I see a USS and decide to drop in (had a few pints). There were 2 federal drop ships and a Type 6 that was wanted. I deploy hard points and assist in the kill of the baddie! I do not think I got the final blow, and only hit him about a dozen times with lasers (drop ships were pounding him). After the kill I received a 37K bounty award. Is there any word how this has been sorted out yet? Did I receive partial bounty for the assist? I was laughing all the way during this fight as well!

I also laughed when after the fight was over, I was scanned and told I was clear and to move along :)

Well thank you very much for letting me go after helping you fellas out :)

if you do a chunk of damage right before the killing blow then you get the reward not the NPC

Odd because their lasers and multi cannons were just destroying the fella. I only did minor damage with stock lasers (2). Odd that I was to receive a bounty at all for my measly effort. So did I receive the entire bounty? I did not take the time to check to see what the total was for in the left UI.

Also, sorry. I posted this in the wrong area :(

I think if there's a player that did just 1 point of damage to the target, that player gets the bounty even if AI ships did all the rest. I'm gonna test that on the next 200cr bounty guy I see.

WOW! If that is true, I could just fly in, take one shot and wait for the battle to end??? That seems off. I could make a killing just taking one shot and then move on?

but only within a certain time limit. if you did the first 1% damage then did nothing else the NPC's would get the bounty.

since that update i've only lost a bounty due to a poorly timed reload or when i'm trying to get a faster ship back in my gun sights. i've not lost a bounty while actively firing as you could before the update

well, AI is really bad at finishing ships off before they jump, so that's your risk right there...

Would the bounty be claimed if the damage was done from ramming? I was thinking on smaller ships, take a few shots then ram them FTW? I have gotten pretty good at this in the Type 9 :)

i've had mixed results from ramming, fairly sure you get nada if all you do is ramming damage (much to my disappointment)

I finished a few jumpers off by ramming my cobra into them from behind with boost.

Most dumb one was an Asp atill at 30%, I lost all my shields and reinforced hull dropped to 21%.

Oh well, 6k repair cost is still dwarved by the 50k bounty I didn't miss out on.

ok note to self: don't finish off bigger ships with ramming, no matter how good you are in shape and how close they are to destruction.

How do I find a specific corporation where I have a bounty to collect? I missed this one and don't remember the system. Is there a way to see this? It just say Blue something Corp and 8000Cr.

Unfortunately, there isn't really a way except for looking through the galaxy map and selecting system view on systems near where you think you picked up the bounty voucher. In system view, it will tell you all the factions the reside there. Iirc there isn't a way to show which system you have claim able bounty vouchers in. It'll just come down to picking ones near the area and looking what factions have stations. If you're a little further away, you can hold your mouse over a system and click "select" in the gal map. This way, when you exit system view, it'll bring you back to the selected system instead of your current location on the map.

Mostly this guide is about living with a bounty (for criminals) on your own head but I hope this info helps.

Newbie Bounty Hunter looking for tips!

I've only had the game since the 18th, and one of the things I am having a real trouble with is the Bounty hunting.

I wanted my story to be as a Hunter / Explorer, and I used trading to make some credits to my name. I've found that bounty hunting can pay more for less, but I am having difficulty.

I have an Eagle, on it are 2 Lasers and a Multicanon with a KWS. While this works for "easy" bounties, I have found that 98% of the time I am getting my ass handed to me. I took an assassination job to kill some pirate, found him and he had an Anaconda, I didnt even get to deploy hard points and I was toast.

I find that I am lacking in weaponry. Any suggestions on how to make my Eagle a little better at bounty hunting?

Good info about the selected system, the return to current location can be annoying. I think I'm about 100-150LY away from the general area, so I'll save it for a rainy day.

I do Bounty Hunting most of the time and the easiest way I have found to make money is to go to one of the extraction sites in an asteroid field.
You have plenty of cover from the asteroids themselves if being attacked.

1. Look for a site with Wanted Anaconda's in it. They can fetch over 100k+ each!
2. Take down their shields from a distance with your lasers.
3. Let the System Authority Ships take over to pound it while you watch from a distance.
4. When the Anaconda's hull is 30%, go in all guns blazing (4 pips to weapons , 2 on shields)

Wash, rinse, repeat. It works for me. If you don't find Anaconda's then Cobra's can fetch over 20k+

woof woof! - That's my other dog impression

p.s. A combination of Lasers and multi cannons work fine

I've done this a couple of times, not against Anacondas but still... I'd like to ask if it's even possible to take down Anacondas with cheaper combat ship like Viper or Eagle 1v1 without NPC system vessels?
