The Bounty Hunting & Bounties tips, and general discussion thread

The Eagle can be an excellent bounty hunter. I suggest boosting the lasers to burst, more damage for each shot with out too much expense. You may need a better power unit to cope. I'd avoid the Elite Anacondas for now, but you should be able to take on most others. Put a ton of something valuable in your cargo and super cruise around waiting for interdiction then submit. That way you only have one opponent at a time. If they are too much for you boost and dodge until you can get your FSD to work. Don't be afraid to run if you have to. Good luck.

It doesn't look like you've gotten an answer for your actual question, which is relating to your outfitting rather than basic how-to. The big question has to be, are you getting their shields down but not getting through their hull? or do you never get through their shields?

I notice that you've got a nice reactor but haven't updated your power distributor. The PD has a subtle but massive effect on your ship. You're weapons and shields will recharge faster and you'll be able to boost more often.

For weapons you might want to look into stronger lasers since it looks like you've got the headroom reactor wise. Have you given beam or burst lasers a try? If you are melting shields but not hull consider moving to two multicannons instead of two lasers. Two lasers are far more common but that doesn't mean their required.

Let us know how it goes!

The advice is much appreciated! I spent a good chunk of the game trading, so I am not used to the combat system yet, I do tend to have some trouble with the aiming sometimes, but I think I've figured it out.

I can get through the shields just fine most of the time. Depending on the target vehicle, I can be done within minutes, but against more advanced pilot, anything from Mostly Harmless +, I struggle. They tend to have a reinforced hull, I think, as i can get through their shields quick enough, but do very little hull damage. I took down 2 cobras today, it took me 25 minutes each (but they were both worth around 15k).

My current plan of attack is to attack from below or rear, avoid frontal confrontation, as my shields go down in 2-3 hits. I'll give the extra multicanon a try on my next bounty run, and use a burst laser for the remaining slot.

Thanks for the advice! and Happy New Year!

Targeting the subsystems can help, can set a hotkey for it, p.s check out the other new thread with a guy fighting an elite anaconda in the eagle

Where to pay bounty?

So, long story short, I zoned out and entered a station without getting docking permission. Thought I got out in time but the lasers that exploded me said otherwise. Respawned in a different station and paid the 400cr fine. But when I undocked, it said I was wanted and now I have a 500cr bounty on my head and I have no idea where to pay it. It's 500cr against the Federation. I have docked in a federation station and it says I have no bounty to pay. I have docked in an independent station, and it also says I have no bounty to pay. I get scanned and they say I'm clean. But I really don't feel comfortable hauling expensive cargo with the red wanted letters over there. Any suggestions? Thanks.

When docked at any station you can go to station services/contacts/pilot's federation and pay off criminal records from.any syatem (at a premium price).

At the station at which the infraction took place you can pay off local bounties AND fines at station services/contacts/local security office.

Note: unpaid fines turn into bounties after 24 hours.

Hmm, I've done that. Under contacts it always says I have no bounty, no matter what station I go in to. I'm thinking it might be a bug at this point because I didn't have any fines against me to begin with until I tried to dock w/o permission. And I paid that fine when I respawned. Strange. Thanks for the quick response :)

If it's real you'll know where you got it when the police scan you and start shooting you. :)

It was a bug. My game froze in a station and when I logged back in, the bounty was gone. But, about 3 trade runs later, I lifted off the pad in Ackerman Market, stowed the landing gear, proceeded towards the exit, and my hauler suddenly started to overheat. Nothing I could do. Exploded and lost 100k worth of cargo. It's crap like that that will turn me off of this game real quick. I've only been playing 3 days so 100k is a big deal right now. I was so close to a cobra. Jeez. I have no idea why that happened or what I could have done to stop the runaway overheat.

My #1 cause of accidental overheat is forgetting to turn off silent running. Also the key binding for it is close to landing gear for me and I've fat-fingered the wrong one at least once.

Bingo. A quick check of the keybindings showed silent running to be right next to the landing gear key. I've never activated silent running until now. I had no idea. Good lord. I'll just move that binding, hehe. Thanks for the tip.

Kill bounty hunters mission.

Accepted a mission from my local bulletin board to kill 2 bounty hunters in the next system over.

After scanning a few ships in SC I managed to interdict a few ships that had warrant scanners equipped and kill them.

No objective update.

Ok.. so now I have a bounty, this could work, i'll just fly around in SC and let someone interdict me so I can kill them, surley they will count as "bounty hunters"

I let this happen, kill the target, no objective update.

At this point I have around 15-20k bounty i'm going to have to pay off, the mission reward is about 13k.

"Alright fine" I think to myself. "I'll just go to the Nav beacon and kill anyone who tries to collect my bounty".

Great plan. I now have a 25k bounty on my head, and no objective updates.

So my mission timer runs out, im down 25k, and I still have no idea how to actually identify the targets im "supposed" to be killing.

What gives??

Pirates also tend to be a bit chatty. Watch your Comm for messages like "What are you carrying?", "No cargo? Not worth my time" or "How do you make a living with no cargo" and things along those lines.

Missions usually have partnered USS's. Try dropping in to a few. If you are scanned and given "Your clean, move along" type comms message then that pilot is a bounty hunter (or security so check before assuming). I think you can get them in extraction zones and nav points also.

As for traders the same applies, check out USS's for lone trade ships.

Best place to find pirates are at resource extraction sites. They always pop up at those, and plenty of them. Going hunting at Nav Beacons and USS is a bit hit and miss. So if the system you're hunting pirates in got an extraction site, go there.

Also, get yourself a Kill Warrant Scanner. This will tell you if your target is wanted in the current system/faction you are in - and in the left-side data panel under 'Contacts' you can see if the target got bounties in other systems or with other factions. If hunting in anarchy-systems, you pretty much need check this data-panel info, since a cursory scan will always show 'clean' for all targets.

I have a theory about that.. Once i accepted a Kill Pirates Mission for the Empire, and the Location was in the same system - It worked killing the guys that scan you and say something like "Lets see what you have in Cargo", the same mission didnt work in a system that was controlled by another faction, i guess in the case of Pirates you would need a warrant scanner and actually kill a "Pirate" that has a Empire Bounty, altough i dont know how this would apply to Bountyhunters then because takin a Empire mission for them thats in a Federation system didnt work at all with the guys that said "youre free to go"
