Community Event / Creation The Buckyball Racing Club presents: Double Trouble (Swift-16 Championship, Race 4)

@Raiko

Sadly, Real Life demands on my time and attention did not permit me to give this brilliant race either of these two precious resources in the quantities it deserved. A condition which has become fairly common the last couple of months, when it comes to video games at least. :(

Still, at least I dredged up enough of both to at least put times in the board. :) And made quite a few ships explode! :D

Thanks for hosting this race!

First and foremost I want to thank @Raiko for this stunning race. The fact that the basic race was so dammed simple but the bonus bits made it certifiable.

To begin with my race went as normal with me scouting and slowly building up muscle memory. I was doing ok until Monday when all hell broke lose as my ships refused to land for me. The number of times I tried and just sat there in the SRV watching my ships fly off. It wasn`t just one ship or in one version of the game, it was any ship in any version. At this point I was losing minutes per run and sort of lost heart.
Then Sgurr decided that he would run round a couple of times with me to see what was going on and polish my rough edges. With his tips I managed to massively improve my SRV techniques. The ship issue never went away however, but the improved SRV runs gave me a boost.
Those who know me also know I just do not understand the meaning of quit or stop, so I did not. I learned a way around the problem which was 30 seconds slower than it should have been, but worked. I now began to ramp up my speed with only a couple of days to go. Overall I did as well as I could under the circumstances and can at least hold my head up again.
The guys on the forum have been absolute stars trying to help. I want to thank @Raiko, @Alec Turner, most of all @sgurr who really helped me get going.

Despite my issues I loved this race.

Thank You again Raiko

Commander Sulu

What a fantastic race ... massive thanks to Raiko for putting together such a tantalising smorgasbord of bonus shenanigans in such an elegantly compact and seemingly simple package. Loved it! Had a couple of final attempts at improving my regulation time on Sunday (since, in theory at least, I only needed a handful of seconds to climb a couple of places). The first felt really fast and was going beautifully right up to the moment when I approached Hoshide for the final touchdown with too much drift, smashed into the toastrack on 9% hull and blew up! A minute's deep breathing to calm down and then, realising I had time for just one more run, lined up on pad 12 one last time. And oh my god, what a run it turned out to be. It didn't break any records, didn't even warrant a new submission, but was possibly one of the most nerve wracking and thrilling Buckyball runs I've ever had. I won't spoil it further but will hopefully have a video ready later today. In the meantime congratulations to everyone who managed to get a run in what has been one of the most equally infuriating and exhilarating races we've had.

Many thanks to Raiko for staging this race, which I was not able to give the attention I would have liked and which it deserved. It reminded me of Alot's race, Advanced Options, with all the possible shenanigans having bonuses, and which I ran many times in different ships.
Well done to everyone who managed a time - I have seen plenty of explosion-filled blooper reels, which shows that it was no easy task to complete. The top times on the board are just astounding, with races completed with all shenanigans in a similar time to my making it around the course without any. o7 and congratulations to the winners!
Hope to see you at the next one!
Fly fast!

Can I just reiterate what everyone else has said with ref to what and absolutely bonkers of a race this was. From first reading the detailed rules. I thought to my self it’s sound far to complicated to even get near the top end of the middle board.
After much scouting round I managed to hatch a plan and give it a good go.

It’s been an absolute hoot attempting to get everything ticked off. Me thinks @Raiko has a rather dark and twisted mind to hatch a race like this one, so thanks very muchly for making fun but difficult

So until the next….stay safe, be good and fly buckyball style

There were many, many runs over the final weekend, with 28 out of the final 50 times being submitted since the last update. I'm giving a quicker summary of the runs, because you'd be waiting until tomorrow if I went into too much detail.

Until the very last moment, it looked as though all the action would be outside of the podium positions, with extensive changes to the top-10s, but the leading places untouched.

In regulation, Sulu (@Fish172) and @Kevin The Stabber both posted improved runs, but were over taken by Cmdr Raiko (me!!)in Fat Tony's Hotrod and Buckyball veteran Cmdr Aken.B in Random Attempt. Aken's "scouting runs" narrowly beating my "eleventh hour attempts" in both classes (and probably beating poor Sulu in both classes by less time than he had to wait for his naughty ships to land - sorry mate o7).

@Epaphus and @Alec Turner held onto 4th and 5th without managing to submit improved runs (although Alec had an EPIC run that can be viewed above), and @sgurr's incredible adjusted 01m52s in Class of 84 was enough to hang on for the win.

The "Khan!!! of the Week" award in regulation definitely goes to Cmdr @Bruski though for for his best run in You Haul 16 Tons... - the very last entry submitted - that snatched 2nd place from Cmdr @Ozric by 15 seconds.

Highlights further back on the were board were Cmdr @Willyum-71 who survived a big impact in the tunnel at Conjunct, but then unfortunately forgot to make a Bootlegger reverse, and Cmdr LeroyJethroTull who miscalculated his time, was awarded a run around two minutes faster by The Race Marshalls (moving up a place), but forgot to collect the beer (losing that place again).

In Unlimited @sgurr was again the winner, with @Shaye and @Bruski unable to make improvements, Sulu and Kevin again lost out to me and Aken, but this time the "Khan!!! of the Week" award probably goes to Cmdr Sulu who overcame his ship recall problems enough to pip Alec by a single second - and very pleased he was about that!

Further back, Cmdr @Draig Seren attempting to break and enter through the wrong door, and had to bug-out when his unshielded Cobra came under heavy fire, while LeroyJethroTull again received a time bonus from thanks to The Race Marshalls' V.A.R. system and this time he remembered the beers and jumped up two positions.

Thanks again to everyone who participated. There are a couple of runs that I've not validated yet, @Heliaxx's video is still processing, and @Draig Seren's regulation run video is unavailable to me (maybe private?).

I've left my own runs as pending, and linked the videos below, I'd appreciate it if one of the other race hosts could have a look for any mistakes I might have missed, but I think they're both valid.
I made a single valid "shenanigan run" in each class (after also blowing up once in each) and left it at that - I noticed that other Cmdrs had picked many different routes, but stuck with my original test run route in both runs - luckily nothing was obscured - and trusted my original gut feeling that it would be quicker to visit both Nauani stops in one visit to the system.

I'll post the confirmed final standings tomorrow, and also try to give my thoughts on planning this beast.

Congratulations to everyone who took part, thanks for making it a fun race and a good read. Thanks once again for organising the race Raiko, it's been great fun. Very frustrating too and it involved a lot of destruction. Felt very worthy of a compilation :)

Thanks for hosting a frustrating, but rewarding race Raiko. I only wish I could have spent more time on it.

The route I ended up prefering (if the jump was open from Lanchester's) was:
Conjunct -> Intermutual -> Lanchester's -> Lewis -> White Grove -> Neff Hub -> Hoshide
Conjunct -> Lanchester's -> Intermutual -> Lewis -> White Grove -> Neff Hub -> Hoshide
Lanchester's -> Intermutual -> White Grove -> Neff Hub -> Conjunct -> Lewis -> Hoshide

Conjunct -> Intermutual -> Lanchester's -> White Grove -> Neff Hub -> Lewis -> Hoshide
Conjunct -> Intermutual -> White Grove -> Neff Hub -> Lewis -> Lanchester's -> Hoshide

In the end I do think the Courier or the Asp Scout would have been a better ship. And obviously the Cobra. 😬

Quite surprised by that, I really expected to drop some places in regulation. This weekend was a struggle to get improved times. The one improved regulation time was lost when I landed a little hard at Hoshide costing me the CMDR Daisy bonus 😐

Thanks Raiko for hosting a fun race.

Low gravity warning 😂

Ahh! Panic! Is my second Regulation run one of those not validated yet?
I'm sure I submitted a regulation run right before I submitted my DBX Unlimited run, and it was both more than a minute faster than my previous run, as well as improving IronBucky to CMDR DaisyDemolition Man bonus. Yep, found it,

While it won't get me out of the 1-pt club, it would move me up the board just a bit, and every place above dead last give me a little bit more satisfaction of being able to be competitive while playing on antique hardware with basically dial-up.

The race was amazing fun by the way, I didn't think anything would be able to top the Thargoid Structure Scramble, being those are my second favorite areas in the game, but the last two races have been just as fun, if not more so! I thought the bonuses complexity might give me a headache when this thread first went up, but it made it so much more intricate and strategic!

Cheers to @Raiko (and the Lonnigan Brothers) for hosting!

Edit: Lol, I noticed when the video autoplayed that was the run I forgot to turn around on the landing pad before starting, so I could have shaved a few more seconds off if I wasn't an imbecile.
Edit2: It was Demolition Man, not CMDR Daisy, I had a Daisy run that was about 30 seconds slower.

I'll update the table with that run, that's why we have this confirmation period at the end to tidy up anything that get messed up.

I thought that I'd probably missed your run while going though the final weekend entries, but it's not actually on the list of submitted runs.

We had a glitch with the Google form once earlier in the week where submissions weren't being logged correctly for a couple of hours, so perhaps the same thing happened again. If anyone has any run missing from the last update, give me a shout and we'll sort it out.

@shockbait you definitely deserve every place you can grab with your runs, I felt every second that you lost while deploying your SRV and accessing the station menu. Thanks for persevering, and I'm glad the cookiebots didn't stop you enjoying the race.

Well that was a b*****y fantastic race, enjoyed it immensely (even if I didn't think so at the time!) I only had 5 successful Cobra runs, and 1 Courier and 2 Dolphin finishes. 23 failed runs in unlimited and 10 regulation. I don't think I've ever had ratios like those before. The whole weekend was spent frantically trying and failing to get improved times, all the way to a final run ending with an Orange Sidewinder error trying to jump to Neff at 5 seconds past midnight game time.

Ginormous thanks to @Raiko for coming up with such a fiendish challenge: on first reading it sounded way too complicated, but trial runs turned out to be reasonably straightforward, then actual racing became hideously difficult again! You diabolical genius, you!

As mentioned in a post somewhere, I did manage to get round in Odyssey as well. That run turned out to be just over 70 minutes, with bonuses bringing it down to 49. Mostly long waits getting in and out of supercruise, very long hyperjumps and frequent pauses of anything from a few seconds to several minutes.

Huge congratulations to the winners, and a hearty well done to everyone that took part.

So here's my blooper reel, and I can now sit back and watch everyone else's!
