The Buckyball Racing Club presents: Tunnel-ish Vision (Swift-16 Championship, Race 3)

Tunnel-ish Vision final jpeg.jpg

The final boards are in the second post below.

Individual racer write ups and their runs can be found linked here:

With the Thargoids continuing to cause havoc it's been decided that infrastructure across the bubble needs to be surveyed to check for damage and general space worthiness.

With that in mind a government busybody with large shell company owning friends sub-sub-sub-sub-subcontracted the work out until it's not worth doing for those at the end.

And that's where you lot come in, last in the line we're the only folk who are mad enough nip round a bunch of stations, ports, cap ships and installations in double quick time just for the fun of it, and maybe a drink at the bar after it's over.
We don't really need an excuse now do we.

We've just received some commentary from Cmdr PolarBruski, overall organiser of the Swift 16:
Selecting the Buckballers for this ... is a wise choice and nothing can or will go wrong with us doing high speed "inspections" of infrastructure. We certainly won't cause more damage than we find. :D

The basic outline is:
  • Start (and finish) on the pad at Gaensler Station in the Findja system
  • In any order visit the following infrastructure and perform a close pass
    • Empire Capital Ship - Vequess - deep space ~80 ls from star, fly through its superstructure
    • Agnews Folly - Vequess - fly under both of the twin orange circular thingies, either direction
    • Federal Capital Ship - LP 214-1 - orbiting body 3 - fly through its superstructure
    • Chief Environment Authority - Tir Na Nog - orbiting body 2 - fly through a single tunnel
    • Universal Employment Board - Tir Na Nog - orbiting body 3 - fly through a single tunnel
    • Payson Holdings - Yaroklis - a Surface Port, fly through both tunnels (not a single tunnel twice)
    • Optional Bonus 1 - "Trench Run" at Gaensler station at start or end of run, this will provide a time bonus of 90 seconds!
    • Optional Bonus 2 - a single 20 seconds off for doing "Turner's Tactical Bonus", (cause he likes doing it so much.) Fly any one of the passes or tunnel runs (your choice) while going backwards ie. boost, FA-off, flip, pass through backwards. Evidence screenshot should show you looking back through at the entrance as close as possible to the pass, speed and engine trail will show what you've done. No flipping after the fact ;)

Things that are and aren't allowed
  • You are NOT allowed to have either a docking computer or a supercruise assist module fitted to your ship.
  • You are NOT allowed to supercharge your FSD prior to the race (yes, it is possible) but you CAN make use of White Dwarfs and/or Neutrons during the race, not that it's will be needed here
  • You are NOT allowed to make use of a fleet carrier during your run.
  • FSD injection is NOT allowed.
  • You are free to start with as much or as little fuel on board as you want.

Race classes

There are two classes you can enter for this race, the regulation Cobra class and the unlimited ship class. The regulation Cobra class is the standard unengineered build that's being used throughout all of our championship races. You can find the build linked here:

Regulation Cobra build

In the unlimited ship class you can use any ship you like with any amount of engineering, although keep in mind what's not allowed above.

You are allowed to enter submissions in both classes.

Evidence for you run:
  • There should be a total of 9 or 10 screenshots with the time and location showing as follows:
    • Gaensler Station start - on landing pad showing time and launch button -- standard shot
    • A total of 7 screenshots showing a pass at each location with 2 shots, (one for each tunnel) at Payson Holdings in Yaroklis
    • Optional bonus "Trench Run"
    • Gaensler Station finish - on landing pad showing time and pad menu with launch button
  • Video submission also allowed although screenshots are preferred.
  • You might want to record a run then take screenshots from that rather than trying to press F10 at the right moments
Screenshots can be uploadeed to Imgur or somesuch

Screenshots required:
  • 1 shot for each pass or tunnel including optional TTB
  • 2 shots for the optional Trench Run, one just as you've entered, one just before you leave
  • For Regulation Cobra only I need to see your module loadout please, 2 shots from the right panel should show everything.
Some example submission screenshots.
NOTE: You do NOT need the red lines, they're just to indicate where you should go
NOTE 2: For the Trench Run bonus I'd like a shot just as you enter the trench and one just before you leave please!
NOTE 3: Please remember to screenshot module loadout for Regulation Cobra please, usually takes 2 shots to do this

FAQ.
  • Q) At Payson Holdings what do you mean by fly through both tunnels (not a single tunnel twice)?
    • There are 2 tunnels on either side of the port, fly through one, cross the port and fly through the other. The order does not matter
    • Whether you're an inny/outy or outy/inny tunnel flier, or a mix of both, does not matter as long as both are done
  • Q) What does 'through' mean at the Empire Capital Ship?
    • In the demo image above fly through the red circle. Demo video at top has example.
  • Q) How much of a trench is needed for a bonus run
    • The full length of one side, entering at a corner, going along a straight, then exiting at the next corner. Demo video at top has example.
  • Q) At the two installations Chief Environment Authority and Universal Employment Board does it matter which tunnel I go through?
    • No, there are mutltiple tunnels to choose from, pick one and screenshot when you can see the exit. NOTE: some tunnels are easier to find and go through than others ;)
  • Q) How many times can I get Turner's Tactical Bonus?
    • Just once at a location you choose. Feel free to try them all for fun though!

Turner's Tactical Bonus guidance - by Alec

The technique is as follows:

  1. Start flying towards your chosen gap at a steady speed with Flight Assist on. Turn on the "mouse widget" in settings to give you a dot in the center of your screen for precise aiming.
  2. Once you're perfectly lined up, turn off Flight Assist and simultaneously zero your throttle.
  3. You're now drifting towards the gap along your original trajectory and can apply any amount of roll, pitch and yaw without affecting that trajectory (as long as your throttle is zeroed and you don't apply any lateral thrust).
  4. Use pitch to flip 180° - this can take some practice. It's very easy to overcook it and end up going through the gap sideways rather than backwards (which will make poor old sgurr's job of judging the screenshot that much harder).
  5. Wait and pray.
  6. Once you've slid elegantly through the gap, flip again, turn flight assist back on and away you go.

Stating my intent to vroooooom!

Cobra MK III "Ask Again Later" of course.

As for unlimited, Imperial Courier "The Sans Serif" almost certainly, and I'm quite tempted to also give my Mamba "Moonshiner" a spin round the course (yes, it does fit through surface tunnels ... just).

I am most certainly participating sir!... And I'm considering the trench run mandatory for me... Always wanted to try that... (and that gateway turn thing... I think when I first started playing I saw Bruce and Arf doing that in a Frame-shift... I didn't even know you were allowed to go in those places back then... I've wandered into a few of them since... slowly!)
