Community Event / Creation The C-Pod: A DIY Command seat (build log)

I just registered, first and foremost to congratulate you on your build. It is simply put EPIC! The attention to detail is incredible. I know I personally will never pull something like this off, but it is a great inspiration to the other commanders out there. Thank you for your inspiration. An real artist in my eyes.

So, this thing is dead?

Nope. I've been dealing with a very sick daughter for the last 6 months :( I've just taken 3 months off work (started yesterday) to hopefully get things back on the level at home. It's been the most challenging time of my life sadly.

I have a few household matters to attend to but will be finding time to complete this. The very last thing I want is for this to die!

Lazarus.

Family first. All else is nothing. See ya when you're ready.

Agreed. Look after yourself TIOO and I sincerely hope your daughter is doing better. At least I think you know, there are a bunch of people here (as I'm sure they are everywhere) wishing you and your family the very very best. o7

As much as I agree with 'family first', do not forget to add a little distraction time once in a while. Your mind and body needs that, even if it is just 15 minutes a week. Watch a cartoon, read a magazine, take a short walk outside. Being a cancer patient, i know what it mean to push (at least) 150% every day. It'll wear you down, because you *need* to unwind once in a while.

Im glad to hear from you here TIOO and I wish you and your family all the best in the world mate.
You know we are all eager to see you progress on the c-pod, but all that is second hand, you and yours comes first.

Good luck and take care!

Been stalking this project thread the last 2 or so days. I'm actually in the process of making my own flying seat, but i also plan on making a table for my screen and a button box powered by arduino as well as boxing the whole thing up.
Just wanna wish you well OP and thankyou for the thread, you've definitely given me some things to think about in my build and actually made me more confident in what i can do with the build as i also have limited tools available to me. Hopefully we'll see the completion of this project in the near future though.

By all means, go for it! It might seem challenging but it is very rewarding, and not too difficult if you take it one step at a time.

Share some pics Commander?? :D

Yeah i can probably supply some pictures when it gets a hard start. At the moment i'm still in the planning phase. I've used sketchup to get the basic shape down, now im refining, changing shapes and so on. I'm focusing mostly on the button box at the moment, trying to learn how to use the arduino first. If i do decide to do pictures i'd probably make my own thread since i dont want to hi-jack OP's awesome thread. Also my build will be nothing compared to the quality work shown here :p

Arduino MIGHT be more than you need, especially if you need to learn how to use it first. Try something like this instead: http://www.derekspearedesigns.com/64-button-no-matrix-controller.html All you need to do is wire a Momentary button to two pins on the board, plug it into a USB port on your PC and assign the Button Press in Options in the game.

A ready-made board is awesome, but going DIY with the Arduino is not much more difficult. You still need a switch and two wires (gnd and signal) and nothing more. There's millions of tutorials and sample code online, it's dead cheap (down to $3 for an Arduino Pro Micro leonardo clone), and once you enter this domain, a whole world of awesomenity opens up on you like led animations, analog sensors (did i say joystick/throttle/rudder?) and lcd displays.

Hey guys I have just registered to subscribe to this thread. Found it via a simple google search and i am thrilled by this project. @OP: Take your time with your family and keep up the good work if you took care of them. I will be notified when you update your project. (Sorry for my not 100% correct English. I'm not a native speaker)

That's cool @cmd awesome and thank you @sherlocked_bbc!

Well, it's been a long time since I started the project and getting it back up and running is going to get a little difficult give that winter is approaching here in the UK. Nevermind. Things have been very difficult recently but appear to be finally settling down again.

I bought a Rift today ... should be arriving tomorrow. Can't wait to try ED with it.

I also upgraded my PC as well - the Purple Pixel Eater - packing a GTX 1080 and an i7 6700k with 32 Gb Ram.

Here, take a look ...

I did make a the PC stand as well:

... but that was only a box. It did, however, get me back into the swing of things.

Going to get familiar with the Rift and get back on this soon. I'll probably get the side pods completed first.

The rift is really does inspire awe with ED. Glad things are settling down TIOO. Good luck!

ED and the Rift.... OMG doesn't really cut it.

After VR playing 2D is now only for the pretty screen grabs, imo.
