Community Event / Creation The C-Pod: A DIY Command seat (build log)

Thanks Enride. Yes, that thought crossed my mind, I think it's the angled section on the back edge.

Finished cutting one of the sides. The front has been shaped to line up with the shaping I'm intending to do around the front seat pads. I now have all the pieces I can use to clone the other side.

The lower lines show the shaping for the side pods I will make. I will replicate these lines but reversed for the front of the pods (the shorter line will be on top and the longer one below). The upper line is where the wood needs to be trimmed.

I will need to re-think the cutouts due to the change in profile ...

That is looking amazing, I am loving the look of the lines and pads, truly awe inspiring to see that level of detail. Thank you for posting updates

Man, I wish I had halve your skills to build something like that. I wonder if you finish something like this if you could sell it for a lot of money... I'm sure there are people that are willing to spend a lot of money if it turns out to have as much quality like your other projects...

Thanks pigfumbler - more than happy to keep posting updates, it keeps the momentum going :)

Thanks Kingdark - only fairly basic skills are needed to make something like this. A fair amount of patience and persistence is needed though!

Pre-wired LEDs with a collar arrived today. I like them. They're very discrete and will be ordering some more in different colours.

Also looking to buy a couple of handles for the side of the seat. These will be more for decoration than function:

Edit -2 ordered :) These will be embedded rather than laying flat.

Oh yes .............

I have noticed before that "big red eject buttons" can be pretty expensive but just spotted this panic button one ... [ link ]

Interestingly, there's a key (which normally resets after you pushed the button and the button locked) I'm wondering if it could be worked or reworked (and I think it could be) so, unless you remember to put the key in (hang it around your neck when away from cockpit?), it's not safe to fly, as you can't eject eject eject (the button is locked without the key, so eject switch is depressed when leaving seat, as a "safety precaution", unlock when starting again)?

Maybe more for Cmdr Pigfumbler, as it could do with his distress-it paint effects .. but there's a flat facia version [ here ] or a different design which I also quite like .. [ link ]

And this is the massivest, cheapest, big button that I can see on this particular e-search (linked off the picture) .. no key this time .. just a wailing "ALARM" (haha)

edit:

And for the man who has everything? I suppose there's always the ...

LOL Winterwalker - it would be cool to roleplay ejecting - if you could attach it to a keyboard stroke switch, so it actually works ingame... lol but then where do you stop? There's still many controls in E D that aren't mapped to my hotas setup (and I'm not going to buy a tablet just for this game on top of everything else).

Still.... I look at the sidey cockpit ingame with the drop down "pads" that go over your thighs and wonder.... especially as the left one looks similar to my nostromo gaming pad - hmm maybe for galactic nav or summat.... and a swing arm for my KB for easier typing

I'm already using gripper style gloves when I fly - mainly because I get cold hands... but I kinda pretend they are flight gloves :) :)

Why stop? :D .. let me see .. other possibles could maybe be red/ yellow/ and green "running lights" (perhaps aimed at the ceiling above your head) on a manual switch over, illuminating the room around you in the glow of your "status/ alert level (assuming playing wth the room lights turned low)?

I also saw this ... It's a terrible tacky object, but would stars (hopefuly slow moving) in peripheral vision add anything in terms of a sense of movement? (Perhaps tipped on it's side, so the projected lights roll towards you as they go over, indicating a forward movement?)

I like the sound of this.

At one stage I was toying with the idea of adding TENS shocks to a glove (and/or buzz/vibration). If linked to force feedback / rumble, as the rumble gets worse the shocks increase, making it ever harder to recover your already off centre position, while your muscles tense up? (and a real belt if your ship blows and you simulate ejecting?? or am I just being evil now? :D)

edit: Nostromo pad yes, though I was looking at (much cheaper) regular number pad and think a quick paint over could be interesting. (ROCCAT is much later job for me)
For mouse control I have a touchpad in mind
(not this one, I already sourced .. bid bid bid away :D)

I found this while looking for touchpads:

its a mini finger mouse, with an optical input...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mini-Handheld-USB-2-0-Touchpad-Mice-for-Laptop-Notebook-/371156739664?pt=UK_Computing_ComputerComponents_JoysticksJoypadsGamepads&hash=item566aaa6650

kinda cool actually, would negate the issue of having my hotas setup on my pads, then having to lean forward to use mouse to some menu navigation.

Edit: or this... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1Pc-Mini-USB-3D-Optical-Finger-Mouse-Mice-for-Laptop-Computer-Notebook-New-/261632349150?pt=UK_Computing_ComputerComponents_JoysticksJoypadsGamepads&hash=item3cea80d3de

not the craziest idea in the world and it's less than £2.00!

Edit: I wonder what might be needed to make one of these work?

This is my main concern .. the mouse continuously falling off the chair !! :D

I've never tried one of these, don't know how you use it.
looks "interesting" though (integrate into glove? not sure ....)

sets me in mind of the "virtual laser keyboard" [ link ] ..
mPvZTA_HzhYvNoJmes3bbUg.jpg

not all that cheap, and maybe negated by iPad / Roccat .. but (possibly) could you Voice Command . "keyboard" (on) and "stow keyboard" so it vanishes when not in use? :D

You could probably adapt but as it's an internal component you'd need to interface directly .. which would be tricky .. (or use and arduino / raspberry PI, and program in the protocol and ... hmmm)
I think the USB / self contained trackpad (of TIOO's version) makes life much easier here. They can be found pretty cheap if you look around (I spent £3.99?) and doesn't void as many warranties!! :D

Finally, though [ this ] version is a little pricey I see something like this as being "quite" the style

I like the idea of staying in touch, with the temperature, time and precipitation on my home planet, in part to remind that there is a real world out there still!

Well, just arrived at the end of the thread after reading my way through it and just want to add my congrats on such great work so far, the quality and attention to detail is amazing.

I've been toying with building a 'pit for years now to use with Flight Sims but suffer from extreme procrastination, idleness and basic lazyitis...

Did get around to boarding our small dormer attic out a few years back and drew up rough plans (https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model.html?id=c2b0838881c6802986a22189af6c5035) for a setup but it never got past the basic office setup there is now from where I am currently re-enjoying Elite after 30 years away from my Spectrum!

Got a Warthog set (and modded Cougar) and Simped pedals all boxed away waiting for me to get off my backside and do something to utilise them. Just using a Logitech Extreme stick and a G13 keypad for now but have a couple of 3DConexxion devices I'd like to use alongside and Voice Attack as well. It may actually be Elite, and this thread, that finally gets me to do something more up there to bring everything together.

Actually, it's always been the thought of a space sim more so than a flight sim that has been in the back of my mind. The attic lends itself better to a generic starship than a plane - need to climb through a hatch via a ladder into a dimly lit area, duck under a beam and settle into place. Also quite cold up there in the winter to add to the authenticity!
Anyway, keep up with the fantastic work, look forward to seeing the rest of it.

Haven't posted for a while , but just to say awesome work as ever onlyone kenobi. That perforated mesh, I'm sure i've seen it in black, I think in the kit car mags? Can't do a detailed search as I'm at work and my home broadband is down for the weekend

No time like the present MagicMan! Join me in getting started so we can show TIOO how it's done (btw, that IS joke)!
Though I'm a step behind, following some unbelievable generosity from a couple of guys on facebook, having pity and donating surplus computer bits following their upgrades (!!! wow) ..
I might be playing soon, and then ... sim! Your attic looks like an ideal "space" space.

ha! It's 5.05 and I am the boss after All, some interesting stuff here you may like http://www.carbuildersolutions.com/uk/

There are some great ideas of inspiration (all in one place) on those pages.
