Community Event / Creation The C-Pod: A DIY Command seat (build log)

No need to remove the cases each time; that's a very important factor and is what the offset is for - I don't want these to interfere/catch me with getting in and out.The offset will likely be around 3cm by my rough calculations. This will ensure that the sides of the cases are flush with the inside panels of the seat. It also dictates the need for a strong platform, hence the use of an aluminium panel. That's also the reason for losing the weight of the pods - unnecessary strain on the platform is removed. Solidity is my number one target in all projects.

I have re-cut the sides for the seat sub-frame. On closer inspection of my bucket seat, I can see there is a change in the rake angle at the back of the seat around the mid point between the seat base and shoulder area. Hopefully this will be a close match. I'll know soon when I assemble. After extensive sitting and testing I've also dropped the back of the base by 2.5 cm so I lean back a little further. This seems to be the best/most comfortable seat position for me. There is no change between the seat base and lower back section.

Ah i see, sounds great!

Sweet, looking forward to see it refitted!

The box has been reassembled and the top section split:

Very difficult to see the change in rake in the back section of the bucket seat so I've used white lines to show:

Looks like mine is angled marginally more. Anyway, that's not the most important factor, comfort is. I will reattach the seat pads and review. If it's not right, I will adjust.

Thanks for sharing all your hard work, it really is inspiring! I have been looking around for a gaming chair recently but seeing this post has really got my creative juices going.
Note book planning this afternoon at the pub ( while the boss is in the hairdressers ) and see if any of the ideas can be used when i sober up tomorrow!

Thanks again

Piggy

Thanks and no problem pigfumbler (love the name!) :) Look forwards to see what you come up with and am interested in seeing any doodles / sketches you have.

Re-fitted the pads - 3 steps forwards, 2 steps back.

The throttle will likely sit a little lower than shown:

Edit: Now to attack the shaped sides - I hope my idea works out ...

Edit 2: Thinking about changing the shape of the main lower seat panel to accommodate this.

Nice!
Looks a bit like some futuristic body armor of sorts :)

Have you thought about making the lowest backpad a bit thicker, to support the hindquarter I mean? Not everyone prefers this though and only finds it uncomfortable.

EDIT:
Sorry, in english i think its called "lumbar support".

Yes, lumbar support is still under consideration. I would use the second lowest back panel for this if I do. Lumbar support in my car tends to make me uncomfortable after about 20 mins so will consider this only if I need to!

I think with the upper section now angled forwards, it's pushing my lower back outwards meaning less need for the support. The current shape feels pretty comfortable but only time will tell ...

Just messing about trying to get a feel for the shaped pieces at the sides:

These will be covered in very firm foam and glued to further pieces to allow me to screw them into place. I will trim the lower piece back a little more ...

Edit: more like it. Now to smooth off and go and cut 3 more pieces of wood to attach it to.

The side has been trimmed back and 3 pieces have been cut for this to be glued onto. These pieces are shaped to fit along the edges of the existing contoured panels.

That's it for today ...

Cheers Winterwalker. Not sure if this is going to work yet though!

Edit: trying to wrap the curve with foam is proving impossible. I'm going to re-think :(

Hmm. Well I can see how it would be trickified by the curve ..
a shame, though I'm sure whatever you end up with will still look the biz.

The pieces are now glued together. I will also screw these in place for some additional rigidity to assist the covering process.

That really does look super futuristic....damn,reminds me of something else, but I can't think of it.Could have been something on Space 1999? either way, looking superb!

Interesting Ven! I've always had the padding from 2001 in mind in terms of a fitting these together. The whole aesthetic of that film has left a lasting impression on me.

I'll check out Space 1999 now :)

As for today, Ive re-cut the panels to go the simpler route and .... I have the wrong sort of staples for the staple gun. I must have made that mistake a few years ago when I last ordered some. Never mind, more have been ordered now.

Yes,I see what you mean.Actually the padding on walls was quite popular in 70's sci fi..This,plus The Liberator from Blakes 7,and the walls from the original Alien film (Pic) Alien3.jpg

Yep, it was terribly trendy back then! Those from 2001 seem pristine compared to that shot from Alien. Must be the soft touch of those anti-grav bootees they used.

So I decided to do some weighing. I knew the Warthog throttle was a heavy so and so. 4.18kg to be precise! I took the screwdriver to it and detached the base - there are 2 plates, 1 with extra weights added to it.

I removed that one and weighed it - 1.18 kg according to my [probably inaccurate] kitchen scales. Liposuction for my hotass complete ;)

... yes, it still works.

I think the wall pad becomes something of a design standard, in movies aiming to depict realism?

Looks like the Warthog throttle is built to last ! Nice ...

About the panels ... agreed. In that picture from Moon, it looks like they've cut corners and not covered all the sides using wooden edging to get around the problem of crinkly edges ... err ... wait ... that's just what I'm doing ...

..what great skills you have.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Shrek, a pleasure :)

This project seems to be running very slowly at the moment - the seat is taking far longer than expected. Hope people aren't getting bored ... If I can get the seat panels completed this week, I should have a full weekend to get started on the sides.

you may want to contour the seat padding before applying the outer fabric shell, and cut and sew the fabric rather than fold and tuck.
