The Cassiopeia Project

Hello Cmdrs welcome to the Cassiopeia safety brief.

Yes I know many of you are familiar with KGBFOAM but there might be some who are not as familiar. To use a fuel scoop just skim a scoopable star and your fuel scoop will automatically start adding it to your tank. Be wary though you fly too close and you will cook or drop out of super cruise.

This is a handy fuelrat guide to what stars you can scoop: https://confluence.fuelrats.com/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=1507609

OK now that the basic stuff is taken care of now here is the brief for the rest of the fleet including myself ;)

The most common cause of deep space fuel catastrophes is watching movies and flying. This problem can be avoided by scooping each time you get into a new system. In any case distractions in deep space can be deadly. On a side note of this topic super cruising and watching a movie can also be deadly if you need a break from scoop and jumping drop out into real space and take your break there instead of just staying in super cruise. You burn through a ton of fuel each hour in super cruise and this is the minimum number.

The next cause of running out of fuel is not deviating from your route when you are in a field of stars that you cant scoop. Take the time bookmark your current end route than re plot the route once you have refueled at a star you can scoop at. Also be aware of your fuel level when you super cruising through big systems and you are low on fuel.It is also possible to run out while landing or taking off from a planet i am not going to go into the detail because of the rarity of said situation.

This is how you can make it easier for somebody to save you.

Do not under any circumstances allow yourself to go to emergency oxygen if you are on your last ton of fuel and cant jump. call for help!!!!!

If you go on emergency air PLS PLS LOOK AROUND YOUR surroundings and if possible write down the name of the stellar body you are near.

If you are unable to do that note exactly what is around your ship that way we have a chance of getting a fix on your position.

Here is where we will be running the rescues out of I am still in the talks with our mission lead and the ppl who are bringing limpets how we are going to do the logistics of this. Please if you run out you can private message me on the forums or you can post on the discord emergency channel.

The fuel rat IRC channel this is where we will coordinate the actual save: https://www.fuelrats.com/

I need a list of ppl with limpets and a controller i would like to get to know you guys better and discuss how we are going to handle emergencies within the fleet.

All people I know that are carrying limpets are marked as @rescue on expedition's Discord, you can easily identify them by green colour of their name (except me, I have admin colour, cause its higher in role chain). If you post any message in discord starting with @rescue, it will get highlighted for all of members of rescue group.

Discord afaik sadly do not support multiple channel presence, but I can set up rescue channel so rescue and rescued can get some private time.

I have limpets and a fuel transfer controller. I am generally available to do any rescues weekdays between say 9am-10pm UK time (I work from home so I can just log on and ad hoc haha) and weekends 8-10pm UK time.

Here's an idea, we could organise small rescue drill event while we are still somewhere close we can resupply. It would give people practice with instancing and finding commanders in trouble.

MISSION UPDATE - Nov 6 3302

This morning we're getting started with the actual expedition. The first stop is Caph, one of the five stars of the main "W" asterism of the Cassiopeia constellation and the closest star of the constellation to the Bubble. During this first week our waypoints are each of the five stars in the "W". We won't be far from the Bubble so this gives you all time to hunt Jumponium materials or get your ships kitted for the expedition.

Some info on Caph: Also known as Beta Cassiopeia, the name "Caph" is Arabic for "Palm".

This is a Federation controlled system. Meeting here is not a requirement: Don't feel like you HAVE to show up. We're hitting these stars as symbolic waypoints of our journey and nothing more. I'll be parked at MacLaurin Terminal and available for chat for a little bit as soon as I get home from work (about 1 hour from this post). If anyone wants to coordinate a joint search for Jumponium that would be a good way to spend the day.

Keep flying!

Is there a meetup at Caph?

We had originally planned to meet up in Maia but after the recent hostilities between the Federation and the Ant Hill mob that no longer seemed appropriate.

The meeting in Caph is nothing really formal. Another chance for everyone to make sure that they have their friends list in order, get to know each other a little better, and to help each other locate Jump materials.

We won't start actually putting the kilo light years behind us until next Saturday when we should be leaving from AR Cassiopeia.

For anyone who feels that our place is moving too slow they are free to move on ahead and begin searching the region around tycho's Supernova Remnant and Cassiopeia a at their own leisure.

That would be an excellent idea but the problem is I am not EU so my time will not match up with everyone's. That is not really a problem the fuel rats have a rather detailed how to for new rats ill post the link to it here and I will be providing some basic tips in a post similar to the safety brief.

We can get several small exercises using our discord. It would't take much, just one or two commanders playing a ship in trouble and someone to give rescuers pointers if needed. So you could participate as tutor on some and then newly educated commanders can give advice in next (if there is enough interest). I, for myself, have not carried deep space rescue yet but am pretty confident in the instancing (result of many of times me and my fried tried to meet up in space when we were starting with ED), so I am half way there, if I might be as bolt to say.

also @ Jaiotu:
Do you think you could post a very short exploration tutorial? I think there are some first time explorers with expedition, me included (based on what I have gathered from forum, it's just my impression), so I think it would be helpful to have brief Explorer's check list. I know it all can be found on forums, but since it can be a bit overwhelming for first timers, it would be nice to see some pointers like: download and install this from this link, bookmark this site, read this forum thread, etc.

I would be happy to play the role of damsel in distress for any of your training exercises. I am GMT -7 BTW

I was wondering, if you run out of fuel on a planet, can you glide/fall to the surface? Have the rats ever had to save somebody in that circumstance?

Sure. I'll work on an exploration tutorial. I was planning one explaining how we'll be systematically looking for Cas A & Tycho's SNR anyway. Great idea!

To answer your question ratphink yes we have saved some one out of gas on a planet. Standard SOP for this kind of rescue is to have the client log out and relog into elite dangerous non horizons. The game will automatically put you into orbit allowing for rescuer to refuel. Given that this is a new patch i should take the time to check and make sure that this is still the case. You cant refuel on planetary surfaces because there is not enough room for the limpet to attach to your ship. I do like the idea of rescue drill in the discord I will shortly write up a how to rescue and post it here.

I see Ruchbah is on the itinerary for tomorrow, but I don't see a meeting time or place within the system. have we put that together yet?

I'll be getting online about the same time as I did in Caph. I should be able to stay a bit longer since I don't have to work Monday night. I'll probably be online for a few hours then get some sleep and pop back in for a bit. Being Monday I'm sure a lot of folks won't have as much time to be in Elite. Jump on when you can and see if you can link up with anyone on the project membership list. I'll probably try to find someplace nearby with Jumponium materials and try to hunt those down.

It's 7 AM my time, so if I get on it would only be for a few mins before I head off to work. Right now and the next few hours is my typical playtime. So Ill probably jump in around this time and see if anyone is around. If you wouldn't mine posting the system and body you end up prospecting on. it'll save me the search.

Will do. I'll probably be online around the same time you will, after I wake up :)

Just a quick question to expedition members: Do you feel like we are moving too slow? I don't want to hold back the veteran explorers but I also want to make sure that we aren't outpacing the novices.

This first week is being done at a deliberate crawl, barely leaving the Bubble at all until Saturday. We will start speeding things up next week.

Oh, and for your reading pleasure I found an interesting article about Cassiopeia A:

Bookmarking this comment here. It originally appeared on Erimus' "Nuetron Highway" thread. We might be able to use some of these neutron jumps on our way out ot and back from the journey.

Hey everyone!

I spent a couple days making my own route on the way out to the rift, then cleaning it up on the way back. The longest distance between 2 neutron stars is 997 ly, and the longest chain of neutron stars I was able to use in my 55 ly Anaconda was 5, would've been 6 if I hadn't run out of fuel and had to diverge to scoop.

It isn't really optimized for 55 LY, it just uses what few neutron stars there are out there, and where there are higher densities picks the ones with the best average distance between each other. I don't feel like running it all again just to get the metrics, so I understand if you don't list it on the front page, but for anyone who wants a bubble-to-rift route here's what I charted. And if anyone wants to resubmit it with all the proper information don't hesitate to, I'd love a mention if you do though.

Bubble to Formidine Rift

Direct Distance : 11 800 LY
Type of ship used to chart the route : Anaconda
Route is optimized for : 55 Light Year Ship
Jumps : ??
Estimated number of Jumps required via conventional travel for this ship range : 236
Number of Neutron Jumps : 37
Number of intermediate regular Jumps : ??

MISSION UPDATE - 7 NOV 3302

Today's waypoint is Ruchbah (Delta Cassiopeiae). We're still very much inside the "Bubble" as we visit our 2nd star in the Cassiopeia "W" asterism. Ruchbah is Cassiopeia's knee.

I actually had a bit of trouble finding this one on the galaxy map. My initial search had me looking at Alpha Sagittarii since both Alpha Sagittari and Delta Cassiopeia once bore the same name. Apparently more then one constellation has a knee. Who knew, right? The International Astronomical Union approved the name Ruchbah for Delta Cassiopeiae on 21 AUG 2016. Alpha Sagittari bears the name "Rukbat" as of July 2016. Both Ruchbah and Rukbat mean "knee".

We won't be meeting at any particular time today. I'll be in Ruchbah later, around 15:00 galactic time, and then probably around 20:00 or 21:00. My primary goal for the day is going to be hunting down jumponium.

Keep flying!

Aye I wouldn't mind going a bit faster, alternatively knowing where we are going after the end of this week as I may need to get a head start to ensure I'm there with everyone else :) Don't play much on the weekends.
