The Cassiopeia Project

The scouting mission is a cool idea! Would be nice to know a few Planets where we can find that premium stuff on the way.

I'd be up for making a little trip out to Kappa Cassiopeia to scout out some systems. Be a good chance to test out the exploration build I've got. I can be there and back in a few hours, spend a bit of time poking around for green systems.

That would be great guys. I'm rubbish in an SRV. Tried finding some jump materials a little earlier today and it was a total bust. Driving the SRV is not my favorite thing in Elite :(

Just go at about 10-15mph and its fine usually. I tend to land in a big crater with a central peak, explore the crater and move on in ship. I never spend more than an hour in one part of one planet, if you haven't found stuff by then it's not coming.

I actually hated SRV driving before I set it up on my controller, I would't go back now, it so much better more convenient and intuitive. And that is even tough I still pilot ship with mouse/keyboard.

I'll gonna make a way right for AR Cassiopeia, since I am at work at Saturday (which is just so annoying, I would love to go for some SRV racing).

Posting a "Week One Briefing" with a few exploration tips.

Sorry for the Double post but the how to is here.

I have decided to operate on the assumption that the people with limpet controllers know how to friend and wing. I have also decided that the fuel rats have a great guide on how to to rat and it will be enough for the actual rescue.

Here is how i would like rescues to go down for the expedition.

step 1: explorer logs to main menu

step2: Goes to the discord or here and posts that they are in distress. I hope we will have a dedicated rescue channel on the discord for this.

step3: rescuer gets a hold of person in distress works out a rescue time and location etc. Determines if person in distress has a mic if both rescuer and person in distress has mic it can be done by discord no need to go to IRC.

step4: both go to the fuel rat site and join the IRC. PERSON IN DISTRESS GOES TO THE I NEED TO BE RESCUED OPTION WHEN THEY JOIN THE IRC. THE RESCUER GOES TO THE I WANT TO RESCUE PEOPLE OPTION. (side note for RESCUER /join #fuelrats) you need to type this in to get to the rescue part of the site. Make sure you inform the mischief that you are flying with the expedition and the person who joined fuel rats in need of save is nearby ect.

step5: person in distress and rescuer work through the fuel rat work flow.

step6: Person in distress is saved.

Ok here is fuel rat SOP important to read from IRC and communications to debrief those are the sections that are most relevant for our purposes: https://confluence.fuelrats.com/display/FRKB/Rescue+Standard+Operating+Procedures

Feel free to look around and read the whole thing if are curious about the mischief.

It is highly advised that people carrying limpets on this adventure check out the fuel rat IRC and observe a rescue.

Does anyone happen to know which galactic coordinate system is used in Elite?

The coordinate system is centered around sol. left or right of sol:up or down of sol:from sol. -3400:500:10500 so this would be to the left of sol and about 500 up from sol and the distance core ward would be 10500 light years from sol. sol is 0:0:0

Yeah I found there is at least four different galactic coordinate systems in use. One is a polar coordinate system, so it's not that as Elite uses a grid, although it has some similar reference points. Since FD went to some trouble to put stars in the right spot they presumably based the in-game system on one of them. But which one?

The reason I ask is that coordinates for Cassiopiea are available, though of course it's the distance nobody can be really sure of, but we should be able to establish a directional search line with a bit of maths.

use the one i just posted above that is the one for finding most systems in deep space. before gal map actually worked fuel rats would you the system above to find the clients star system.

Separate discord channel for rescues is not a problem, but keep in mind that you can't be present in more channels at once, that's why I went with @rescue role setting that will highlight message in general channel for every rescue member, as I am expecting more people would want to hang there for a chat than in empty separate channel and so the distress call can be potentially reacted to much quicker.

I can easily set up new channel, but I would suggest trying the current system during drill event and then make changes if we see it's not working.

The coordinate system is based on this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galactic_coordinate_system

Real world Galactic Coordinates are spherical. If you convert the spherical coordinate to cartesian coordinates (adding distance) you roughly get the coordinates in Elite.

Muetdhiver and Lorrad are better at this than me though.

We'll be using this conversion system during our search.

For anyone like me that wants to be part of the survey for jumponium planets, but hadn't ever participated in something like this. I found this to be a hugely helpful resource.

I do have a question for those members of the group more seasoned at prospecting. In the above linked guide it is strongly implied that identifying a "Green" system require a significant time investment in the SRV. But doesn't the detailed surface scan tell you everything you need to know without even landing? Did I miss something or is the guide out of date?

First green system near Kappa Cassiopeia has been scouted out. Outordy IW-W B1-0 is 17ly from Kappa and has all the mats for J1, J2 and J3. The polonium percentage is still rather low, so the hunt continues.

That guide's a little bit out of date. Back when DWE was going on, the only way to find out the materials on a planet was SRV prospecting. It's a lot easier now that you can just point your ship at a planet and get the material percentages.
