The Console Commanders Memorial Thread

Having been through MMO shutdowns before (just look at my profile pic), announcements like this always sting even when I’m not directly affected, because I know what exactly it means for the game’s community.

Even though the game itself will fortunately still be playable on console for the foreseeable future, the console playerbase is going to be in shambles after today. Communities are always the true victim of any MMO stopping development.

I hope FDev comes up with a way to transfer saves in a more complete manner, and perhaps provides console players with a free Horizons PC key. Considering how cheap those get on sale, it’s not like it’d be a big financial hit for FDev, but it would be a nice gesture for them to make.

In any case, o7 CMDRs of the PlayStation and Xbox realm. Y’all have my empathy.
As a console player I agree with this. I'm actually going to ask the mods to lock this thread.

On the other hand, I bought Horizons and Odyssey back in 2015 as part of the LEP for 180 USD, thanks to a 15 USD discount for having previously bought Elite: Dangerous, and usually play Horizons due to Odyssey's exceptionally poor performance on my computer, so in a way, console players may have lucked out.

Sure, having the option to buy Odyssey might be nice, but console players aren't exactly losing something, since they haven't had it.

For me this isn't about Odyssey, it's about the way some forum members, who have every right to feel completely let down at the moment, are being treated.

FD has proved scant, little detail to the console player base about this and the yet they, and I for that matter, have to suck it up.

I have a PC copy as you know but a lot of people are dedicated console players. They have my sympathies, sincerely.

As far as my forum behaviour goes, I think that thread has crossed a line with me.

This was posted in that consle news thread.

So what this means for all the PC players (as stated I have an older PC version/account and a PS4 version/account) is that any potential new player base for the game has shrunk significantly as consoles are a huge share of the gaming market.

So what happens when the PC version is no longer a financially viable run (which could possibly be tomorrow the way things are going)?

Servers can always be used for more profitable games that FD is running.

What happens? Shrink the galaxy? And when the last server dies.................... goodbye.

So it pretty much about the future of the franchise, really.

Goodbye, you will not remebered, nor it will be seen soon as week later since I post this. It will be lost on dead threads, that no one cares about.
Unless it gets closed by the mods, I think this thread has real potential. May your post be remembered :)

If someone ever asks me, “what’s it like to read the ED forums?” I’m going to link them to this thread. The tone of this place is really captured quite succinctly.
Indeed it is, although there are better examples of clothes renting, sarcasm and wit, virtually any thread illustrates so well how the 'angry ex-boyfriends', trolls and career complainers operate here.

Perhaps the best examples could be the recurring 'Hotel California' threads, or Cobra IV ones, or even the VR campaign ones...

Shame there are no more MacOS threads, they would be sublime!

Imagine seeing the news on the forum of a game you play about, on how the company behind it stop developing the game on a platform. And instead of offering some moral support to the people who are affected, or at least ignore the problem since it doesn't concern you, you decide to go out of your way to troll said players.

I mean, that would be rude, right ?

But then the same people were trolling VR players when they were told they wouldn't be able to play Odyssey in VR.

Empathy, google it, it's a concept. Something our world would need a bit more nowadays.
Remember a while ago, when we had that thread going about, how nice the ED community was, how more "mature" it was etc. Etc.?

But yeah, I guess showing a little bit of sympathy to console players who have been strung along for the last year is just too much....

Yeah, and don't get me wrong, I was hoping for Odyssey on consoles both for the players who wanted it and for the further optimization that would likely need to have been done in order for it to run acceptably.

For me as the game stands now, had I just bought Horizons for 40 USD, or whatever it was, instead of the 180 USD for the LEP, I wouldn't exactly feel put off.

I saw the thread and thought it was a really nice idea; I'm not a console cmdr but if I was I'd certainly be upset. It'd be nice if they could keep the thread and just purge the trolling instead of it getting derailed into oblivion or causing it to get locked.

Edit: ninja'd ;-)

How about these apples.

I don't own a console (well i have some older ones around (PS2, Gamecube etc)) and built my current PC mainly with ED in mind, and only starting playing EDH a month back because i figured out it was probably time (original Kickstarter backer hoping Fdev had enough time to 'fix it' etc), and overall i like EDH very much at the stage i started playing it. I like it a lot.

Now i am going to be forced to play Odyssey at some point (maybe soon(tm)?) even if i have very little interest in FPS face shooting in Elite, and knowing it will likely kill my humble PC compared to the nice smooth experience i get from EDH currently.

Am i likely going to be FORCED to BUY a console just to play the kind of Elite game i (traditionally) like? So, console players with your future access to EDH all safe and secure, what about MEEEEE! I am going to be forced to play with awful GUI and performance issues unless i splash out for a console and play the game you have access to forever more!

Since Fdev was light in clarification, I'll try to help a bit.
You will not be forced to play Odyssey (as in, the DLC). Just like you are not forced to play Horizon (the DLC, again). You can play "vanilla" ED on PC, and you will not be able to land on any planet at all, if you do so. If you are already on a planet when you switch through the launcher, you'll get kicked in orbit.

However, while we are still waiting any confirmation on that, it seems the original Horizon client will cease to exist for PC. You'll get Odyssey client, which include new lightning, shaders, new UI, planet tech.... If you own the DLC, then you will be able to partake in foot activities and atmo landing. If you don't own said DLC, then you will not be able to do so.

If you have no issue with all the non DLC related changes Odyssey brings, then you will not have any issue with the future merge. If you do, well, I'm sorry.

I'm a lucky £80 all updates free KS backer. I assume when they merge the PC base my option to select 'EDH' will be replaced with 'Odyssey' only and as a all updates backer that is what i get, FPS face stabbing and all (plus worse GUI and performance)? I don't think i will still be able to play EDH will I?

I could maybe buy a console to ensure i can still play EDH (which i might prefer as an Elite game).

That was the point of my post, to help the console players step outside their current angst and understand the wider issues involved here ;)
